Let's build this up again. If you contributed before, please do so again. Also, it would help make the thread more user friendly if all the posts had a link in them to media. Here's some that I had bookmarked:

ElliottSmithBsides.com (http://www.elliottsmithbsides.com) - great place to find rarities and bsides
Northsix Brooklyn Show 6-3-03 (http://www.people.umass.edu/nthurnau/elliotsmith6-6-03brooklyn/)
Lido's Site (http://lido.binaryops.com) - great place to start for live shows (only works on weekends)
Toazted Interview 2000 (http://www.toazted.com/artistinfo.php?artist=197)

I'm confident this was filmed in full. AND..that something will pop up soon.

A nice girl named Rachel, who helps put on Redfest, let me know today that those involved with Redfest did NOT film it, at all... But there was at least 3-4 people i'm guessing that filmed it personally, at least in part.

Anyways, if anybody has any info, i for one would appreciate it.

I think we should be able to come up with something

Is this definitely from Redfest in 2003? It's just that I downloaded it from Eztree I think, and it said it was at Sunset Junction in 2001.

Either way it's such a nice video, and the first solo is just amazing, plus Elliott's smiles while he plays it.

sera, you MUST..find a neighbor, find a friend, call information, just..!!!!

are any of those paintings of elliott by chance?

sera
04-28-2005, 03:55 PM
lets say most of them are inspired by him
i started out painting his lyrics, like i have one called "beautiful confusion"
and I have another one i just startred that says"youre no good youre no good youre no good" dedicated to my ex boss shawn whom fired me last saturday and i have one of elliots ghost which is a portrait of him that i did from a picture that i got from sweet addy plus i am working on several elliott ghost canvases (from your media pics) and plan on eventually displaying them to the world. I am working on it. there are a lot of blockades in my way but i can gracefully maneuver around them. i will graciously acredit this site as my source!sea:) :) :) :)

yeah, it has made me desperately want to learn guitar.. but i have an electric not an acoustic.. so i'll probably never be able to learn properly..

The Col inn
04-29-2005, 08:55 AM
it doesnt really matter if its electric or acoustic, just stick at it. you,d be suprised how quickly it comes with a bit of practise. one day you,ll sit down and play between the bars or son of sam, and wonder how the hell you did it! :guitar:

viola
04-29-2005, 12:24 PM
Yeah, electric or acoustic, or mandolin or banjo, it's still a great place to start. I actually started with only an electric when I was 10 yrs old or so, and didn't get an acoustic for a few years. In some ways, it's better, because it's so much easier on your fretting hand. Once you build up strength and callouses, the move to acoustic will be a lot easier.

Thanks again for this. It's just great to hear/see Elliott talk too!

Hey Fibbons,

Sadly, this link is expired.:(

Is there any way you can re-post it, or is that a huge pain. Sorry to bug you about this, but it sounds like it's really worth seeing!!!!

lisa
04-29-2005, 06:13 PM
my guitar is some really old fender that my dad got as a kid for 40$ from a used store... i think im too afraid of breaking it to actually attempt to learn how to play anything.

viola
04-29-2005, 06:26 PM
Really (eyes light up!) an old Fender? That he got as a kid? Do you know what model it is? That thing could be valuable, if it's not in totally trashed shape.

I love vintage guitars. Used to have a very old Fender Mustang electric, from the mid-60s, but didn't know the exact year. Sold it for $175, like a dummy when I was about 17. Wish I still had it.....

lisa
04-29-2005, 07:06 PM
i'd say he got it around 1967, but it was used so no idea what year it was made but its in almost perfect condition.. it looks pretty much like this one:

viola
04-30-2005, 12:07 AM
Oh man, an old Stratocaster, very cool!!!!! If you can find the serial number on it, I can probably tell you what year it was made, if you;re interested. I can't remember where Fender used to put there serial numbers, but it's somewhere on the guitar. Probably the back of the headstock, near the tuners.

It might be fun to trace the #, just to know. I've got a great book on decifering serial numbers on guitars.

No problem!

I must have downloaded it ages ago, but I only realised I had it a few days ago. It's so cool, especially the bit where he's swinging that stick about and does that thing with his foot and kicks it like one of those 1930s film stars or something. Also the little piano dialogue between him and one of the studio guys.

Toazted Interview 2000 (http://www.toazted.com/artistinfo.php?artist=197)

That toazted is like something out of the twilight zone. The questions seem really weird, but maybe it's just that the (presumably) Dutch guy who's interviewing Elliott just isn't all that comfortable with English. I half expected techno music to be playing in the background. That would have made it really hilarious.

You're right that it's a traditional celtic song, but I believe that Dylan's version has several different lyrics than the traditional. That's why I called it Dylan's Moonshiner because I think that's the version Elliott's playing, but you're right about the origins. Then again I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. :-D

It's fine, no big deal. Mr. Smith probably knew the song from Mr. Dylan's version so was nonethewiser.

Now I'm confused. The version posted here by mike35 is the version I have - which doesn't match the audio version of redfest that I also have - or the picture of elliott at redfest that's in Spin magazine. it does match (as near as I can tell) the 1/31/03 Henry Fonda show. I've heard that the two videos have been confused. Does anyone have a different redfest version?

Hi all! I just want to advice that there's a new version of Either Or Sessions cleaned up by me and hosted by Ignatz. The url is
http://www.slightlydark.com/tim/Elliott%20Smith%20-%20Either-Or%20Sessions%20(cleaned%20up)/

INFO FILE:
Either Or Sessions

01. Speed Trials
02. Cupid's Trick
03. Angeles
04. Go By (Inst)
05. Ballad of Big Nothing
06. New Monkey
07. Between the Bars
08. No More
09. Now You Wanna Show Me How
10. Bottle Up & Explode! (guitar)
11. Placeholder
12. Punch and Judy
13. Alameda
14. Pretty Mary K
15. Pictures of Me
16. Say Yes
17. See My City Dead
18. Some (rock) Song
19. Abused (Inst)
20. Bottle Up & Explode (piano)
21. Going Nowhere
22. Either/Or

-------------------
Final versions of tracks 01, 02, 03, 05, 07, 12 , 13, 15 and 16 would go on to appear on "Either/Or".
Final versions of tracks 10 and 20 would go on to appear on "XO".
An old version of track 18 is in the Needle in the Hay's Single.
A total changed version of track 14 would go on to appear on "Figure 8".
Track 22 is a version of track 08 with different lyrics (and title).
21 and 22 are tracks believed to have been recorded in "Either/Or" sessions,
but were not included in the leak of the other songs above.

-------------------
ABOUT THIS VERSION::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I downloaded these mp3s from SoulSeek, then cleaned them up with Adobe Audition 1.5 (and its plug-ins). Doing it I figured that a lot of "Either Or Sessions" songs were the same but cut (silence at the end, Elliott's tuning, etc). So I just deleted the incompletes songs and keep the good ones.

More detailed information: I transfered the mp3s to wavs, cleaned them up the best I could [Noise Reduction, EQ, Normalize, etc,] and then transfered them back to mp3s.

Anyway a lot of things make me hesitate about the grouping of these Sessions, (example: there's very different quality between some songs, and "Some (rock) Song" is the same as the Jackpot Studio version) but the recordings are definitely different than the original record/CD versions, and they were all played in a studio, so that's something.

I'm not a proffesional user of Adobe Audition, so anyone is welcome to try to get better results than I did. At least, the "Either/Or Sessions", the "Jackpot Studio Sessions" and the "Figure 8 Demos" now can be listened to without problems and with acceptable quality.

I hope you enjoy it,

Marabalos.

I've just finished a transcription of 'Bye' for solo piano - taken from a recording at Quatro Club, Japan, 12 December 2000.

It is rather good (if i say so myself) and completely faithful to the performance, including wrong notes. As a pianist i'm so glad Elliott has left us with this one piece that is a complete entity played only on piano. If anyone knows of any other solo piano works i'd be pleased to hear about them.

I've created a pdf, so any budding pianists out there please drop me an email and i'll send it over to you: stee.docherty@gmail.com

I tried doing a search and couldn't tell if this KCRW stuff had been posted before. Sadly I don't have realplayer on this computer so I'll have to wait til I get home to check it out.

Singer songwriter Elliott Smith of the band Heatmiser writes songs that have been described as "tragically beautiful." He comes to KCRW to share his work. Aired Tuesday, May 6, 1997.

This looks promising as well...
Producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Elliott Smith, Richard Thompson, R.L. Burnside) will be my guest DJ at 10 pm, bringing in some rarities from his sessions, and talking about his new record label Acid Blues. Aired Saturday, January 16, 1999.

No need to send me any money but maybe you could donate a few $s to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund instead?

That was an entire show.

I wonder what happened. I mean, why it would be blocked or taken off the server...? I really don't think that was wrong to put on yousendit.com. I thought that it's totally cool to share Elliott's music like that.

Maybe I can put it back up if anybody's still interested. The video is good, but the audio bit rate is about 63... eek.

I'd be happy to host the whole show, no problem. I can hook you up with an FTP account to upload to, just let me know. It was probably blocked due to the number of downloads, or because some idiot deleted it, which YSI is prone to.

but does anyone have a decent copy of the Saturday Night live performance wher Elliott does Waltz N 1. JOn Brion is on Piano... It is on You Tube but the quality sucks. I am pretty sure someone here used to have a better version.

I can direct you to the show from 1998 where Elliott plays a few songs with JOn Brion:
Jon Brion at Largo, 1997: (25mb) (http://www.gregingber.com/embrionic/largo1-30-98.zip)

(yes wrongly labelled as 1997)One of teh sogs is say yes solo. he also plays drums, and bass and JOn jokes around with him -- it is cute.

but -- hey heads up if anyone finds the SNL show, please!

the thing is, almost every copy of that video is screwed up, the video is like 10 minutes long but the audio is only 6 minutes long. i tried to fix it, i spent like 14 hours on it, it was a pain, and thats about as close as i personally am going to make it like the original. it has a lot of noticeable errors in it but you can use your imagination. atleast you get an idea of him talking in sync with the video.
