View Full Version : coffee
while perusing through beer images and getting thirsty my mind turned to the fact that portland has a oneof the greatest coffee shops...stumptown. there are 3 locations in portland but stumptown coffee roasters supplu the coffee to lots of cafes adn bars and restaurants who demand delish coffe. so..the thread is in honour of them..for thos portlanders who already know you will laugh at some of th ephotos,perhaps..for coffee drinkers out there you should come to portland for a coffee mecca. :Dhttp://www.sweetmarias.com/panamacupping2004/P1010058.JPG this is duane apparently smelling the coffee
here he is at it again,i guess he missed "the panama cupping" so instead he smelled these coffeeshttp://www.sweetmarias.com/panamacupping2004/P1010065.JPG

I love coffee. :) I used to work downwind of Atkinson's Coffee Shop in Lancaster (UK) and the smell of roasting beans used to drive me to distraction. I don't know if it's still the same now but they used to store the beans in huge copper drums and they'd weigh out however much you wanted on one of those old fashioned weighing scales with the lead weights. Then after they'd bagged up your coffee the shopkeeper would write the blend on the packet in calligraphy. It was a painstaking process getting a pound of coffee but it was awesome to watch. The shopkeeper used to have a handlebar moustache and an old brown shopcoat too just to complete the picture.
I love coffee :D but unfortunately coffee doesn't love me now, so I drink green tea instead.

I'm a supervisor at a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in L.A. and i can honestly say I make some of the best cappucinos and lattes. It's all in the foam, you see. And I make the best foam around. I have a secret in making just the smoothest and creamy foam. Anyone who's in the West LA area might want to come and try some.

nice
you can buy it in my town, antwerp, also.. much cheaper then the prices on the internet, only i dont think it is as fresh as when you buy it in jamaica yourself.
espresso s are nice, it is only too bad i dont have a real espresso machine.. you know the italian one, which you can wake your whole neighbourhood with :) I make it in a perculator on the fire; which tastes much better then the shitty espresso machines that are around these days...
anyway, have a nice one
sirens are wailing along manhattan avenue here in brookyln and i am just sipping my first coffee of the day-just some french pres made at my friends house. not bad,not bad.

I used my fab fab 1960s percolator for coffee today.
hurrah! It was tasty.
My favorite cafe in the world was sold to a man with a bushy moustache.
I am afraid that it'll never be quite the same again.
Sadness.
i can comisserate. my fav cafe back in the day was sold. it was effin sad. i cried. it took years to find soem sort fo replacement-and well stumptown is never gonna be what umbra was..but that is ok. everything (nothing)is the same, everything is different (seems familiar though). it all works out.

I heard of a real special coffee, it comes from Indonesia, this coffee gets a special treatment for making it THAT good:
They use the help of cats, because wild cats eat the coffee beans (...) it supposed to be fucking good!
Read for yourself, strange...

i'm doing my best. :D
golly gee, it really is a large city!
and...i only ha done cuppa today! :O and that was at the apt. sheesh.
my roommmate makes weak coffee. always. it is an abomination on my coffee loving lips when i sip it. but he makes a frnech press full then rushes off to work, there is cup leftover. i feel bad about just tossing it out to make my own,so i try to drink it first. it tastes mostly like hot water. (but wait! you say it is mostly hot water! true, but there is supposed to be a flavor a strong delicious coffee flavor..it sadly is lacking in the coffee he makes)
i bought some coffee in ithaca that i am looking forward to drinking, from Gimme! coffee (pieter, i got you a sticker.cos "gimmegimmegimme!" like you used to say :D ) i got sumthin called Iskandar, it is a dark roast sumatra. there were many options but i settled on this one and then my pal said "oh yes, that is my favorite!" later i told someone i would send them some portland coffee and he smiled "i will never refuse coffee" ha. my sentiments, exactly. and i mentioned the greatness of stumptown and the fair trade and he said "yeah, that is the one thing i don't like about gimme!" and i was a little saddened cos i thought they would be fair trade, too. and it was $10 for a pound ,which is fine, but i want to know that the workers harvesting the coffee are being taken care of.
but back to my roommie's coffee: good lord, it is crappy. how can he drink this stuff and like it? i just wish he would make less so i wouldn't have to feel so wasteful when tossing the undrunk portion down the drain.
good coffee is good. bad coffee is bad. but to each his/her own.
oh yeah..the label from the Iskandar coffee is amusing.
" Aroma: bottomless,complex
Taste: royal cedar and allspice
Body: replete with dark cream
Aftertaste: mysterious,contemplative "

I don't drink coffee myself, but I think that's great. :)
but but but..coffee.eets a so good! :)
i am brweing my first french press full of the iskandar right now, it really smells fantastic. (i dunno about "bottomless and complex though" haha)
i just realized that while in new york i often didn't drink very much coffee and i was still as amped and up as late as if i had. that is the thing though i have been drinking coffee so long that the caffeine effects don't really have that much pull on a regular basis. i could drink a cup before bed. i have done this. i just like the tatse, well and the aroma, of course.

I like coffee, but it jacks my system all up if I get into a habit of drinking it regularly. I also don't want to become reliant on the caffeine. :darn:
ahh yes. i don't have these issues though. hopefully i won't ever have to give up coffee. though there is always coffee icecream..mmm...
