Do you feel a mix CD you made has ever been responsible for you getting laid?Nah, we were bonking already by then
How long is your average mix? Do you try to fill the maximum capacity of a blank CD?Usually at least 60 minutes. I fill them if I have time
What songs have you used most frequently?'Cupid's Trick', 'Aladdin's Story' by Death in Vegas and 'Powder Blue' by Elbow
What song have you always wanted to use on a mix, but still haven’t? Why haven’t you?Anything by me or my former bands - they just sound so poor next to 'proper' music
What are some of the best song-to-song transition you’ve made on a mix?Probably 'Demons' by SFA going into 'She Said She Said' by The Beatles
What do you think is the best mix CD you’ve made? The last one I made I quite liked
What do you think is the worst? They're all fantastic :-o
Do you make mix CDs for yourself? How often? Not often enough. I used to make loads of mix tapes for the car, but now I have an in-car CD player so I just play albums
Do you still ever use cassette tapes for mixes?Yeah I made a couple recently for a friend who has a tape deck in her car
Do you preplan your mixes or do you make them on the fly?A little from column A, a little from column B. It used to take me longer to sort out the tracklisting than it did to record the mix. These days I just grab a pile of CD's to suit the mix and work my way through them
Do you listen to the mix before giving it to the person for whom you made it?I check that the volume is fairly consistent, but I don't listen through the whole thing
When you make a mix for someone else, do you also burn a copy for yourself? No
What’s the best mix CD someone has made for you?I've only ever received one - it was good. From a guy called Tom. Lots of stuff from bands I've been meaning to get into but never did - MBV, Suicide etc.
What’s something about other people’s mix CDs that drives you crazy?Nuttin' - I'd be grateful for the time they put in
Have your mix CDs been responsible for turning people into fans of musicians you like?Yup - Elliott, mostly
What CDs have been purchased by other people as a result of your mix CDs?From a Basement, Strokes, Elbow, SFA - think that's about it
What’s a really great mix CD opening track?'A House is Not A Home' - The Charlatans
What’s a really great mix CD closing track?'Aladdin's Story' - Death in Vegas
Do you follow the “no more than one song per artist” rule?I do these days, but I cheat by putting on one Heatmiser and one Elliott. I stick my fingers up to the man!
What are some of the self-imposed rules/quirks you have about making your mixes?I'm very conscious of tempo - the first three tracks will always be upbeat, and the CD will gradually wind down. And in the middle of the CD you'll find something massive
How would you like people to respond after you’ve given them a mix CD?As long as they're grateful then I'm good. It's always nice if they come back to me saying they thought one song (at least) was awesome
What kind of mix CD would you love to receive from someone else? The one I mentioned earlier, from Tom, was spot on. I'd love to get a mix of Elliott live stuff, as I have no Soulseek type program, and I'm loathe to buy shows from ebay (though I did do it recently :-o )
If you were to make a mix right now for the person who sent you this survey, what songs might you include?I would break the rules and include my first completely solo recording, because I'm really pleased with it, and as he put together the 'Confusion' CD, he's earned it
Finally, be honest, do you think that you’re better at making mix CDs than most other people who do it?Hell yeah

How many mix CDs have you made?
Dozens upon dozens
How frequently do you make mix CDs?
Usually about one a month for myself, less frequently for others.
What was the name of the most recent mix you made? Who did you make it for?
"This is a Mix for Cheryl" for..er.. Cheryl.
What’s the earliest mix you can remember making?
It was called "Lost Somewhere in the Mix!" :D I remember it has BF5's Brick, a Marilyn Manson song and some other stuff on it
How do you come up with the titles your mixes?
Randomly, usually.
What is the best title you’ve given for a mix?
Some classics:
Super Happy Fun Time Mix CD
Randomnessossity
The Smell on My Fingers
XXXMas Time
Blah Blah Blah Whatever
Sonic Shit
What would you say the ratio is of mixes you make for someone of the opposite gender to someone of your own gender?
Most of them I make for myself, but of the ones I make for other people, I make far more for girls than I do for boys, it seems.
Do you feel a mix CD you made has ever been responsible for you getting laid?
Not entirely. But it's helped.
How long is your average mix? Do you try to fill the maximum capacity of a blank CD?
Or tape, yes. So generally 70 - 90 minutes.
What songs have you used most frequently?
I try not to reuse too much.
What song have you always wanted to use on a mix, but still haven’t? Why haven’t you?
Good question *ponders*
What are some of the best song-to-song transition you’ve made on a mix?
One I'm quite proud of is NMH's King of Carrot Flowers Part 1 -> Kate Bush's This Woman's Work. It's an unexpected drop from noisy guitar stuff into a single piano chord, but it changes over perfectly.
What do you think is the best mix CD you’ve made?
I dunno. I really like the last one I made for me (called "Soundtrack: Neil" - long story), but I'm always on a quest to make a better mix.
What do you think is the worst?
The early ones. D:
Do you make mix CDs for yourself? How often?
All the bloody time.
Do you still ever use cassette tapes for mixes?
Yes, though only for other people.
Do you preplan your mixes or do you make them on the fly?
A bit of both. I'll build it around a couple songs and just kind of improvise the rest.
Do you listen to the mix before giving it to the person for whom you made it?
Always.
When you make a mix for someone else, do you also burn a copy for yourself?
Sometimes. If I really like it.
What’s the best mix CD someone has made for you?
Oooh. This is tough. I've gotten several good ones :)
What’s something about other people’s mix CDs that drives you crazy?
Dunno. :O
Have your mix CDs been responsible for turning people into fans of musicians you like?
I hope so :)
What CDs have been purchased by other people as a result of your mix CDs?
Not 100% sure :O
What’s a really great mix CD opening track?
The Notwist - One With the Freaks. It starts out rather unassuming, with a little programmed beat, then a gentle electronic melody and singing come in, and then about halfway through, it suddenly kicks into high gear.
What’s a really great mix CD closing track?
Wilco - Reservations. It's got an achingly beautiful melody, and it spends about four minutes just wafting off into nothingness.
Do you follow the “no more than one song per artist” rule?
Usually.
What are some of the self-imposed rules/quirks you have about making your mixes?
One song per artist, try to transition slowly between very different styles, use as much time as possible (many of my mixes spill onto 2 discs), try to bookend with longer songs towards the beginning and end, the most energetic stuff tends to be towards the middle of the tracklist, beginning with an instrumental is a plus, etc.
How would you like people to respond after you’ve given them a mix CD?
"Oooh, never heard that before! But I like it!"
What kind of mix CD would you love to receive from someone else?
I 'unno. Depends on the person :)
If you were to make a mix right now for the person who sent you this survey, what songs might you include?
Um. For TheKeenGuy, eh? I'd have to think about that one. *rubs chin*
Finally, be honest, do you think that you’re better at making mix CDs than most other people who do it?
Not really. But I try.
Matty,Oh?

Well, I am only somewhat correct about my reaction to this survey, since everyone's been begging me for an update.
Part of me knows what everyone is talking about -- I'm no stranger to making compilations myself, and the other part wants to SCREAM out that: it's all arbitrary, you could pick random songs in a random order and convince yourself the "transitions" all sounded great; you're not an artist yourself for putting together a compilation of others' works ("but yerrytonto, I'm like a patchwork quilter, don't you see"? <----- sftu); your great opening and closing tracks are probably highly influenced by how you're used to hearing them on the albums they're from (check how many are already in those so highly-coveted positions); everyone does secretly think he or she is better at doing effectively nothing new than everybody else but won't admit to it; girls are (or should be) actually creeped out by the wankishness of it all; and quit trying to demonstrate how "eclectic" you are on your mices, it's dod-gamned annoying and doesn't amount to anything.
Like everything else, these are probably bile-drenched projections of things I despise about my own unpersonality onto others, but ow hell. Sumbit.

I suppose that any film editor could take any selection of shots for a film and put them together in any order and convince him/herself that it's great, right? And I'm sure that no matter what shots the editor chose, and no matter what order in which the editor chose to arrange those shots, that the audience would like it just as much, right? That's why audience test scores are always identical no matter how the film is edited, right? Therefore, of course, there is no art whatsoever in the film editor's job, which is why absolutely anyone in the world can be a professional film editor, and it is impossible for one person to be a better film editor than another. I'm glad that we so clearly agree on this subject.

Ahh, so of course, this isn't art, right? I mean, since the photographs used are all random samplings taken by several other people? Well, I'll let this person know that his/her time was wasted on what so obviously has no artistic merit.

Well, gee, so this could have been made BETTER if the person had CHOSEN a different piece of EXISTING art to base it on, even though it's still all coming from other sources.
So, I suppose similarly, that the quality of a mix CD could, in part, be determined by the person's abilty to CHOOSE what the BETTER group of EXISTING songs to include. I suppose then that it's not quite as random as you first suggested.

I suppose then that it's not quite as random as you first suggested. No, they'd have to choose a better story to make up in the magical space that is the transitions. And they could contrive a story based on any order, just like you could see more beautiful things than UglyElliott if that picture had a more random arrangement, like seeing things in clouds, etceterblah.
So basically, taste both is and isn't as subjective as we'd like it to be. Orn't.

You can't win this one, Blunar. If you want to make the point that some people are pretentious and think that their mix CDs are better than they actually are because of their personal attachment to the music, and the subconscious desire to believe that the music chosen is a creation of the mixer's own imagination and design, then make that argument.
But don't get into this whole silly "it's impossible to say that one mix CD is better than another" thing. It's a losing battle.

I honestly don't know where I stand on how much of what you like makes up you as a person. And I won't say it's impossible to have better CD's than others. Better CD's have better songs, and I truly believe the transition between them doesn't matter as much as some people think. Good songs will always sound good next to oach either.

Yeah, song transitions are overrated. Overall, the most important thing is the content, and then the overall flow of the tracks and then maybe the transitions from song to song. But in any case, it's all about montage, which is why I brought up filmmaking. Just like taking to uninflected images, like a man looking in a window and a loaf of bread, you get the idea that the man is hungry. A good mix CD, in my opinion, is where the mixer can convey something by what he chooses to include that couldn't be expressed by an individual song.
Anyway, I'd go on, but I have to get to work.

How many mix CDs have you made?
Too many to count
How frequently do you make mix CDs?
Not too often anymore, since I now have an iPod.
What was the name of the most recent mix you made? Who did you make it for?
Drawing Mix. I made it for my drawing class because the teacher told us to bring in music.
What’s the earliest mix you can remember making?
The year was 2000. My older sister had just gotten her computer as a high school graduation present and it had a CD burner. We were all fascinated. I made a CD called "Claire's Music Mix" of random songs from CDs I had. Of course, before that I had made lots of mix tapes but I don't remember when I started.
How do you come up with the titles your mixes?
Sometimes I use a line from a song on the mix. Other times I use some random catchphrase I've been using a lot like "Bam!" And sometimes it's just something totally random that I made up.
What is the best title you’ve given for a mix?
Probably "Kitten in a Tree"
What would you say the ratio is of mixes you make for someone of the opposite gender to someone of your own gender?
I've only given one to a guy once or twice I think, but in high school I would make them for my friends all the times. So a lot for girls, very few for guys.
Do you feel a mix CD you made has ever been responsible for you getting laid?
No.
How long is your average mix? Do you try to fill the maximum capacity of a blank CD?
I put as many songs as will fit.
What songs have you used most frequently?
In my earlier mixing days probably "Erase/Rewind" by The Cardigans and "She Says What She Means" by Sloan. In more recent years, probably "Sleep On Needles" by Sondre Lerche and "A Day Like Today" by Tom McRae.
What song have you always wanted to use on a mix, but still haven’t? Why haven’t you?
I have no idea.
What are some of the best song-to-song transition you’ve made on a mix?
This quiz is hard because I don't have most of my mix CDs with me or the time or patience to really answer these questions accurately! Damn you, KG
What do you think is the best mix CD you’ve made?
Maybe the one I made for the first time I went on a plane by myself? I forget what it was called. Possibly "Airplane!"
What do you think is the worst?
One of the ones I made in early high school. Because I didn't have very good taste in music then.
Do you make mix CDs for yourself? How often?
I used to do it all of the time until I got my iPod. Now I just make myself playlists.
Do you still ever use cassette tapes for mixes?
At home sometimes.
Do you preplan your mixes or do you make them on the fly?
I make mix tapes on the fly, but I meticulously plan mix CDs, listening to them at least once before I burn them to make sure the songs flow together well enough.
Do you listen to the mix before giving it to the person for whom you made it?
Yes.
When you make a mix for someone else, do you also burn a copy for yourself?
No, but I keep the playlist on my computer.
What’s the best mix CD someone has made for you?
I've only been given one mix CD before, so I guess the one Brady gave me last semester.
What’s something about other people’s mix CDs that drives you crazy?
Their taste in music isn't as good as mine?
Have your mix CDs been responsible for turning people into fans of musicians you like?
Oh yes.
What CDs have been purchased by other people as a result of your mix CDs?
Hmmm... I don't know. Probably some Sondre Lerche, Phantom Planet, and Elliott CDs.
What’s a really great mix CD opening track?
"Necessito" by Some Girls or "Down on Me" by Juliana Hatfield.
What’s a really great mix CD closing track?
"Even So" by Rachael Yamagata
Do you follow the “no more than one song per artist” rule?
No way.
What are some of the self-imposed rules/quirks you have about making your mixes?
I can't have more than one song sung by a female singer in a row, I can't have songs by bands from the same country next to each other (except the U.S.), I can't have songs by bands that have some tangential relation to each other (for example, having toured together or having the same producer) next to each other.
How would you like people to respond after you’ve given them a mix CD?
Tell me how amazing it is and then buy a bunch of CDs by bands on the CD. And shower me with gifts.
What kind of mix CD would you love to receive from someone else?
I really want one of those "I secretly love you" mixes from a cute guy.
If you were to make a mix right now for the person who sent you this survey, what songs might you include?
"Ego Trippin'" by Caviar. I jest
Finally, be honest, do you think that you’re better at making mix CDs than most other people who do it?
Duh.

it's true! i creep myself out muchofthetime!
but i have to say that my compilations are among the very best ever to be burned onto dye embedded in plastic discs! don't you argue!
for example, my placement of the silver apples songs on the HATE comp was absolutely brilliant! it has nothing to do with the brilliance of the band itself, just my own, thank you.

I made this one last semester for my friend Brady after he made me one. I called it something like "So that your taste in music can begin to come close to being as good as mine..."
1. "Necessito" by Some Girls
2. "Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi" by Jacques Dutronc
3. "The Greatest View" by Silverchair
4. "Kim Wilde" by Charlotte Hatherley
5. "(Drawing) Rings Around the World" by Super Furry Animals
6. "Stand By Me, Yeah" by Sloan

That's why audience test scores are always identical no matter how the film is edited, right? Therefore, of course, there is no art whatsoever in the film editor's job, which is why absolutely anyone in the world can be a professional film editor, and it is impossible for one person to be a better film editor than another. I'm glad that we so clearly agree on this subject.
i can't believe that anyone with a modest knowledge of filmmaking would seriously compare editing a film with thousands upon thousands of stills, to arranging 10 to 20 songs on a cd, no matter how large the cd collection they had to select from.
now, if you were talking about regular photographs placed in a scrapbook, well-decorated with doilies and doo-dads for presentation, and arranged in some sort of meaningful order, THAT would be a decent comparison. SCRAPBOOKIN'! is a craft, much like pasting together seashells, pipe cleaners and googly eyes to make little men, making clocks from driftwood, or *gasp* making a mixed cd. filmmaking is an art (if done well), and a film editor is just someone involved in the process. their input may or may not be artistic, depending on the amount of freedom they are given with a particular job.

How many mix CDs have you made?
not many...I'm fairly new at it, since I just got a cd burner about a year ago.
How frequently do you make mix CDs?
once every two weeks or so?
What was the name of the most recent mix you made? Who did you make it for? fun mix #2, myself
What’s the earliest mix you can remember making?
when I first got my computer and didn't really know how to do it.
How do you come up with the titles your mixes?
they reflect moods
What is the best title you’ve given for a mix?
I have bad titles.
What would you say the ratio is of mixes you make for someone of the opposite gender to someone of your own gender? uh...mostly for me. I think I've made one for a guy, but I"m probably going to make another soon for a friend of mine.
Do you feel a mix CD you made has ever been responsible for you getting laid? no, but I wish I had that power!
How long is your average mix? Do you try to fill the maximum capacity of a blank CD? sometimes...not usually. it's more about the mood and the feel.
What songs have you used most frequently?
I try and not repeat them.
What song have you always wanted to use on a mix, but still haven’t? Why haven’t you? a lot of tori amos stuff, and usually because I think her stuff works better as a whole.
What are some of the best song-to-song transition you’ve made on a mix? no idea...
What do you think is the best mix CD you’ve made?
any of my fun mixes...I don't skip any tracks on them.
What do you think is the worst?
all of them are okay, at least by my standards.
Do you make mix CDs for yourself? How often?
wasn't this a question above?
Do you still ever use cassette tapes for mixes?
no, but I'd love to learn how to. my car doesn't have a cd player.
Do you preplan your mixes or do you make them on the fly?
both..depends on how desperate I am for new music on cd.
Do you listen to the mix before giving it to the person for whom you made it? no.
When you make a mix for someone else, do you also burn a copy for yourself? I keep the playlist.
What’s the best mix CD someone has made for you? no one makes me mix cds...it makes me sad.
What’s something about other people’s mix CDs that drives you crazy? when people put songs back to back that don't work together, and it's distracting.
Have your mix CDs been responsible for turning people into fans of musicians you like? no...I wish.
What CDs have been purchased by other people as a result of your mix CDs? maybe a Wilco cd, if this next one goes over well.
What’s a really great mix CD opening track?
Annie Waits, Ben Folds
What’s a really great mix CD closing track?
Pandora's Aquarium, Tori Amos
Do you follow the “no more than one song per artist” rule?
nope.
What are some of the self-imposed rules/quirks you have about making your mixes? they have to reflect one mood per cd, no exceptions.
How would you like people to respond after you’ve given them a mix CD? start listening to the bands on there.
What kind of mix CD would you love to receive from someone else? a cd of all bands that are new to me.
If you were to make a mix right now for the person who sent you this survey, what songs might you include? I wouldn't...everyone here has great taste in music. I'd be intimidated.
Finally, be honest, do you think that you’re better at making mix CDs than most other people who do it? no, not really.

I make mixes because I don't know how to talk to women; my social skills are that poor. I am even more pathetic than usual, because the women in whom I am interested never actually receive my creations; the sad tapes (averaging 60 minutes in length) stay in my sock drawer for months, gathering warmth.
I hate being a sad sack, but I can't help it if I am sensitive and not fit for the world of rejection that I know awaits me. So, until I meet some really cute goth girl at the ComixFest 2005, I will continue to sit in my bedroom, poring over indie-rock records that no one gives a shit about and keep pressing` the "record" button.

How many mix CDs have you made? I'm just about to post my 100th over at Art of the Mix.
How frequently do you make mix CDs? I'd say I usually average one a month. Lately it's been more. I've finished about five this month.
What’s the earliest mix you can remember making? On tape, I can remember compiling songs from my oldest brother's record collection (including the Sounds of the Seventies box set) while visiting him in Mississippi. On CD, I think it was "What You Were Trying to Say," a compliations of songs that were the only songs that I liked on albums that I bought. I made the mix and then sold all those CDs off used to Amoeba Records... wait, shit, I just looked back and I made "You Sure Picked a Winner" before that, which was a mix for my ex-girlfriend, which she wouldn't take, which was (to me) about the breakup and about being miserable in LA.
How do you come up with the titles your mixes? Most of the time, I use a lyrics from one of the songs on the CD. Not always though. Sometimes I'll pick up a phrase that the person I'm making them mix for has said or something. And occasionally, I actually make them up.
What is the best title you’ve given for a mix? Of the ones I came up with myself... "At Least We Still Have Ourselves," "Long Story Short," "I Want Everything Back" and "Elephant 6: It Will Bring Your Dead Grandparents Back to Life."
What was the name of the most recent mix you made? Who did you make it for? "Everybody Knows," which I made for a girl named Sam, who is a friend of friends and found me on MySpace. She likes Elbow and Franz Ferdinand, so I made the mix based on that knowledge. It's pretty much an Intro to Indie Rock CD, which are usually my most fun.
What’s your primary motivation for making a mix for someone else? A lot of the time I'm using them to flirt, and also I'm always trying to turn people onto musicians they might not have found on their own. And sometimes I make them to try to express an emotional situation.
Do you make more mix CDs for people of the opposite or your own gender? What’s the ratio? It's probably something like 7:1 in favor of girls. For the most part, I rarely make mixes for someone I wouldn't consider having sex with at some point.
Do you feel a mix CD you made has ever been responsible for you getting laid? Partially responsible, yeah. A few times.
How long is your average mix? Do you try to fill the maximum capacity of a blank CD? I usually have to cut songs out to fit the 80 minute restriction. There's always two or three songs left by the wayside that I really would have liked to have used.
Are songs are the old stand-bys that you’ve used most frequently? Umm, Joseph Arthur's "Honey and the Moon," Mazarin's "Suicide Will Make You Happy," Moonbabies' "Forever Changes Everything Now," Bill Ricchini's "Think of Me As a Place," The Hang Ups' "Parkway" ...umm, I have a lot that I use frequently.
What song have you always wanted to use on a mix, but still haven’t? Why haven’t you? I haven't been able to use Jim O'Rourke's "Life Goes Off" because of the crazy ending, although now that I could use Audacity to fade the end out early, I might.
What are some of the best song-to-song transition you’ve made on a mix? Umm, the Swirlies "Sterling Moss" into the Fever's "Ladyfingers" comes to mind. Really, a good transition is just about being invisible, getting from the last song to the next song without the listener thinking about anything, be it how awkward the transition was or how clever the mixer was or anything like that.
What do you think is the best mix CD you’ve made? Umm, I liked "A Dry Day After Rain" and "A Little Bit Softer Now" which are both very sad a quiet.
What do you think is the worst? "Go the Fuck to Sleep" and "Autumn Leaves... Never to Return" had their flaws... "A Little Bit Louder Now" ended awkwardly, the last five tracks or so just never worked, no matter how many ways I aranged them.
Do you make mix CDs for yourself? How often? Not that often. I hear enough mixes that I make for other people. Occasionally I make mixes of songs I've downloaded by artists where I might only like one song of theirs and such.
Do you still ever use cassette tapes for mixes? No, I started out with cassettes until about 2002 (after I realized that no one was ever gonna listen to cassette mixes anymore). About a year and a half ago, though, I made one just for myself, just for nostalgic reasons, doing it the way I used to, creating it on the fly by listening as I record and then picking the next song out and recording it right then, and I purposely used songs that I thought would sound good on a worn out cassette tape, like Broken Social Scene's "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" and Califone's "Pastry Sharp."

What’s your process for creating a mix? Do you preplan your mixes or do you make them on the fly? I load all the songs onto iTunes and mix them there, and thank god I have an iPod now, so I no longer have to burn "test copies" to listen to while walking (because I don't trust how it sounds on computer speakers).
How many “drafts” of a mix will you usually go through before settling on a final tracklist? The first draft is almost always a disaster, the second draft is usually almost there, and with a little more tinkering I have it.
Do you listen to the mix before giving it to the person for whom you made it? Always, I take an hour and twenty minute walk and listen to the CD to make sure there's no recording flaws or moments on the mix that I hate.
When you make a mix for someone else, do you also burn a copy for yourself? I used to end up with earlier drafts left over, but now that I've got an iPod that rarely happens. Now I just keep a copy of the mix on my iPod.
What’s the best mix CD someone has made for you? What was so good about it? I've gotten some good ones from trades on Art of the Mix. I liked "Taylor Made" by Ion Moe, because it had a lot of great indie rock bands who I hadn't heard of yet mixed with songs I liked by bands I knew but hadn't gotten into.
Have your mix CDs been responsible for turning people into fans of musicians you like? Yeah, sometimes I make someone a bigger fan of a band than I am. I know that one girl became obsessed with Hefner after I included "When the Angels Play Their Drum Machines" on a CD.
What CDs have been purchased by other people as a result of your mix CDs? Gillian bought Joseph Arthur's Redemption's Son after hearing "Honey and the Moon," umm... Meaghan bought a shitload of CDs including Elliott Smith, Broken Social Scene, Iron & Wine, Felt, The Clientele and others because of my mixes (although some of the bands she already knew and it was just the straw breaking the camel's back).
What CDs have you purchased as a result of a mix CD someone gave you? CDs by Hot Hot Heat, the Wrens, Baby Lemonade, the Last, the Vertebrats, East River Pipe, the Saturday People, the Autumn Leaves, Dressy Bessy, Coco B's, The Walkmen, Old Time Relijun, Swearing at Motorists, etc...
What’s a really great mix CD opening track? I love songs with slow build-ins, like Bill Ricchini's "Like Falling Asleep" or Ambulance LTD's "Stay Where You Are," where you leave the person waiting for the singer to come in for about a minute.
What’s a really great mix CD closing track? I used to use Lunchbox's "Evolver" all the time.
Do you follow the “no more than one song per artist” rule? Yeah, almost always, except when two tracks are essentially one song, like Badly Drawn Boy's "I Was Wrong/You Were Right." And lately I used Postal Service and Death Cab on the same mix. Whatever.
What are some of the self-imposed rules/quirks you have about making your mixes? When making a second mix for a person, I rarely ever use any of the musicians that appeared on the first mix.
How would you like people to respond after you’ve given them a mix CD? I just want them to say SOMETHING, god damn it. There's nothing I hate more than giving someone a mix CD and they never say anything about it.
Have you ever made a mix CD for someone and then not given it to them? Who and why not? I gave an ex-girlfriend the wrong mix tape once (which was supposed to go to a, umm, future girlfriend) and she never traded for her actual mix tape... same girl who wouldn't accept "You Sure Picked a Winner" later.
If you were to make a mix right now for the person who sent you this survey, what songs might you include? Ehh, for myself? when I do make a mix for myself, I usually go more out there than I'm willing to on the mixes I make for girls... noisy songs, lo-fi songs, songs with really mean-spirited lyrics, etc.
Do you think that you’re better at making mix CDs than most other people who do it? I haven't heard enough mix CDs by other people who really seriously make mix CDs to know if I'm anything special, probably not... but I'm better than most casual mix CD makers, I suppose.

Finally, give us a tracklist of a recent mix CD that you made. Who did you make it for? Are you happy with it? What are the highlights?

1. Ambulance LTD – Stay Where You Are
2. The Dears – Lost in the Plot
3. Hot Hot Heat – No, Not Now
4. Rilo Kiley – Always
5. Joseph Arthur – I Would Rather Hide
6. Ed Harcourt – Apple of My Eye
7. TV on the Radio – Staring at the Sun
8. The Walkmen – The North Pole
9. Brendan Benson – Folk Singer
10. Moving Units – Anyone
11. Doves – The Cedar Room

17. Elbow – Asleep in the Back
18. Sondre Lerche – You Know So Well
19. The Delgados – Accused of Stealing
20. The Pleased - I the Province (hidden track)
Tracks 1-10 came together right away, but the second half took longer because the tone kinda changes. It finally came together when I decided to move up the Doves song, which originally ended the album.
...okay, maybe that's kind of a long survey.

i don't really feel like completing the entire
survey, because i don't make many mixes and
i think most of my answers would be worthless
BUT there's something useful to
be found in this response!
i think a great closing song for a mix
is no name #3, elliott ended with that
song on one of his live recordings and
it just seemed really perfect to end with,
needless to say i've used this song to end
on a few mixes.

BTW, i think there should be a new rule : no quizzes over 12 questions...
but that's just me. I don't even want to re-read all *my own* answers, sheesh
