Further to my recent challenge on the battle of the bands thread, i thought it'd be interesting to see who would triumph in a public opinion poll.
So who's your favourite ATD-I or TMV?

At the Drive-in, all the way. It sounds so chaotic, yet so beautiful all at once. Mars Volta is okay, but it's just not as amazing as At the Drive-in.
Oh, and without a doubt, At the Drive-in's best album is "Relationship of Command".

Now children, we can have our own opinions.
I personally kind of like Sparta a tiny bit less than The Mars Volta, but that's just me.

This has to be one of the most lop-sided polls ever: Mars Volta wins on all accounts.
From musicianship (have you listened to their drummer? He is fucking sick!) to creativity and pure presence, Mars Volta make ATDI sound like bored housewives trying to start a punk band. Lame.

At The Drive-In > Sparta > Mars Volta
at the drive-in was pure energy, especially live... and i saw mars volta a few days ago and they were OKAY... played 50 minutes without saying a word and without being spontaneous... psssh... but i love all three, de-loused and wiretab scars are beautiful although they can't come up to ROC, I/C/O, vaya....

At The Drive-In. I don't have the patience to listen to The Mars Volta enough to appreciate it.

Better musicians are never a guarantee for better music.

That new mars volta video sucks. Oh yeah the song does too. It rips of Led Zep's 'since I've been loving you'.

Haven't seen the video, and I have no clue what song it is, but speaking of The Mars Volta's newest album, I really dig the song "The Widow".

It sure does in this case, as Mars Volta are much more than a punk band.

At the Drive-In is a better band than Mars Volta because you don't have the patience to appreciate the latter?
Kindly explain this logic. :ok:

I kind of get what they mean. Mars Volta is drawn out, and much longer, with the meat of the song somtimes 2 minutes in. At The Drive-In gets right to the point. Maybe that's what he means.

mars volta is excellent music, made by brilliant musicians, but its too much. Getting to hear 3 songs in a 50 minute long performance aint as much fun as the regular thing. Also the ambient parts in between the songs are too much.
excellent band, but they are taking it too far now if you ask me.

Well, The Mars Volta is really a band you have to grow into. I've heard from several people that they didn't like their first album the first few times they heard it, but that it became better after several spins. I agreed with that, it became a little better every time I heard it, but I soon grew tired of trying to like the album because it's just too much. In other words: I recognize that it's a brilliant album, but I haven't heard it enough to understand and fully appreciate it. While At The Drive-In is much more accessible.
That's pretty much my point.

I have just discovered the Mars Volta - the vocals, guitar, and drums are astounding. Both bands are/were great.

I ABSOLUTELY love ATDI, hands down.
After having seen them live twice, I wasn't crazy about the Mars Volta until 2 things happened:
1) I was hanging out at a rehearsal space w/ my friend's band, and the Mars Volta we're warming up in the large room, rehearsing for tour dates & recording Frances The Mute. Listeting to them practice riff after riff, over & over again, drum fills over and over again, was both annoying as fuck and mind-blowing at the same time. Although they are the ultimate jam-band live right now, their arrangements are all SUPER tight and perfectly arranged.
2) The LP for Frances The Mute. This 3-LP packaging is BEAUTIFUL. They even got the Pink Floyd guy, Storm Thorgerson, to shoot the photos. The virgin vinyl sounds INCREDIBLE. If you dig vinyl BUY THIS NOW!!!!

I think my patience with the mars volta comes from years of listening to 15 long minute Pink Floyd songs

I only have one album each of these two bands. Relationship of Command by At The Drive-In, and De-Loused In the Comatorium by Mars Volta. But if I compare this two albums, I´d easily go with At The Drive-In. Some of the songs on that album are really good. One Armed Scissor might be one of the best rock songs of the last 5-6 years.
Mars Volta is kind of  to me. But I guess it´s a matter of taste. I have a hard time finding any real songs on that album. To me it sometimes sounds like a group of very accomplished musicians trying to show off. Not my coup of tea.
