You are a great person, a scholar, and an individual.

Evolution could have just stopped after producing the turtle.

The death of any turtle diminishes me.

Life will be easier now that I know the secret to halting the torrent of turtle gifts.

i love animals...

i could post pictures here for hours.

where's kelsey/larkspur when you need her?

but of course, being the town's resident "cat lady" i must first post a kitty. i've posted him in pet threads before, but on days like today i always wonder where he is and how he is doing. this is turnip, he was a kitten we had here for foster care but when he got old enough and big enough, he went back to the shelter to be aadopted. i couldn't talk the family into keeping this one... :( and 7 cats later, i finally had to stop doing foster care (obviously i adopted too many. way too many... but i loves 'em.)

without further adieu...

turnip. my special long-lost valentine.

You are a beautiful person.

Our numbers grow. Soon there will be enough to start an island nation. I recommend somewhere in the Galapagos.

Years ago, a girl said to me, you are like a turtle. I said, you must be my turtle wife.

hey, dolphins deserve all the credit they can get. they are very intelligent creatures. sharks are much larger and have those wicked choppers which dolphins lack. it's not that unfair for a few dolphins to gang up on a shark. and did you read the article about a group of dolphins who protected swimmers from a great white.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6565810/

dolphins are strikingly intellegent...more so than many higher apes, i believe. birds are, too. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52566-2005Jan31.html)

awwww.....i love your song!

something tells me you are looking at the wrong kinds of fish....:therock:

i worked at aquariums for several years, and most of the fishes i met either just wanted to do their own thing, or were rather friendly...

for example...one aquarium had a dog-faced puffer named jorge....he looked kinda like this:

http://www.dolphindreams.com/images/Pufferfish-1.jpg

....and jorge looooooved algae and seaweed. every week or so i had to jump in the aquarium and scrub the algae off of the acrylic so people could see the fish, and jorge would follow me around so he could eat whatever i scrubbed loose. he would swim just above my shoulder the whole damn time, lookin' at me with those big funny eyes and waiting....it reminded me so much of a dog begging....he made me laugh :D

Now this is my kind of thread!

We'll let see I love dogs, cats, birds, and fish cause i've owned them before, but I'm really into hippos at the moment. Actually I have this really great book called The Blue Day Book that has some really cool photos of animals. I'll see if i can scan some of the pictures later and post them. Here's some with text included:

My prairie dog is named Dublin. She's fatter than the first one, and thinner than the second. I don't know how to insert pics.

Non-monkey-pox-carrying prairie dogs are the coooooooolest.

I have 9 pets; among them two chinchilla girls, who run on a wheel all night long.

Indeed, the cuteness fairy must have used up all the cute dust slated for the deep-sea fishes when she bestowed the blessings of ultimate cuteness on the chinchilla.

Adopt! http://www.chinchillarescue.org/rescues.html

They're pretty cheap once you get 'em home...a good cage can be $$ but as far as maintenance they're much cheaper than cats or dogs or bunnies (I have all of the above).

my mom had a pet duck
it was good friends with their dog

the pictures of it are hillarious.
i always kind of wanted a pet duck for myself

of course, outdoor only.

the dog it was friensd with only had 3 legs, but lots of family tall tales exist about it.

apparently he was really fast and was really smart

my grandma saved his life by finding him in the street

to this day she swears he talked to her.
i believe her, at least that in her mind he talked to her.

his name was bullet.

I'm boring and predictable. My favorite animals are cats.

Especially American short-hair tabbies. There's something about tabby cats that sets them above all others.

Yeah, I got her in Connecticut about 6 years ago... they're illegal now and I can't take her to the vet because they'll take her away. I'm worried because she is losing some of her fur, though she is as active as ever, so I'm not too worried.

Larkspur
09-07-2005, 01:32 AM
Hmm...but she was legal when you got her? Seems like a nice vet might treat her anyway...but if she's active & happy that's a good sign. Is she bored? It could be she's chewing her fur off. Also, ringworm could be the issue.

I'd call around and test the waters for a friendly vet.

The first time I saw a real live prairie dog was at a wildlife sanctuary in New Mexico--they had a colony and we spent so long staring at them and their cuteness that we almost didn't make it down to Carlsbad Caverns before it shut! (Our tickets are printed for 4:59 and they closed at 5--we took the last elevator down) It would've *almost* been worth missing because the prairie dog cuteness was so intense. Almost!

My mom once told me she saw a show about prairie dogs where these rescue guys were going around removing them from problem areas using a converted septic-tanker truck with a modified padded inside; they sucked the little guys through a tube and they bounced into the chamber until they could be relocated!

They made them illegal after a monkeypox scare a couple years back. I'm not going to call around for a vet unless she starts acting different; as of now she's her old cheery self.

They have a prairie dog exhibit at the Detroit Zoo (I live in MI now), and it is awesome. When they come out in the spring, it gets announced on all the local news channels; they're among the most popular exhibits.

I saw this special on prairie dogs, and it turns out they're not just cute, they can be cleverly vicious when they want to be. When a wolf comes around, they send a couple soldiers to coax the wolf into digging into a particular hole, and once he is deep enough, the soldiers spring out from all the surrounding holes and bury the wolf. Now when Dublin is being particularly cute I worry that she is leading me into a spring loaded trap.

Sometimes chickens are really really mean.
Even when they know you are coming into the coop to give them food and water!
But the babies....
Oh they are so cute.
Even when they poop on you it is cute.

*noted* i probably won't get a chicken any time soon. it is just a thought. if i was committed to my living space for a long time then i would do it but i have no idea what i want to do about all that right now. i would prefer a rabbit and a daschund but i am not getting either of those, either.

Maybe *dreams* someday you could live on a big farm with a babbling brook and many many chickens and ducks and bunnies.
And a wiener dog to herd the chickens!
Actually, ducks are cool, and geese too because sometimes they just move right in!
If you have some water near your house, like a stream or a nice clear pond, and a big soft lawn to stretch out and sun on and waddle around, they'll often have their babies at your house! That is cool. They get ornery if you get to close to the little ones -- once some geese attacked my Dad's truck! But they are so pretty!
But foxes come too -- after the little duckies and goslings. Fucking traumatizing. A headless gosling is no happy thing.

You know what? I think I'd like to run a petting zoo...
When I am an old lady.
Petting zoo docent is a nice addition to my "when I am an old lady" fantasy list. Wanna come?

What is that? A wombat? He looks like he got his boys snipped or something!

My favorite animals are probably domestic cats, because I can live with them and I can afford them. When I was younger I used to have a serious menagerie going, with cats, various reptiles, even an opossum and a grey fox. I have a natural affinity for all animals, and am a very good animal handler, with everything except maybe birds. They seem to know I'm primarily a cat person.

I have a very strong affinity for whales and in particular orcas, since I grew up on the Pacific coast. I'm also really good with wild cats and apes, but I don't get many opportunities to work with them nowadays. I'm very opposed keeping wild cats and apes as pets, because it always end up badly for the cat or ape and often for the humans too. All my past work with them has been with rescues, educational programs and sanctuaries.

I'm defintiely an animal person as opposed to a people person.
