Hey, so I just discovered Madeleine Peyroux's lovely cover of Between the Bars. Anyone else heard it? I may be coming to this rather late... Old news, perhaps? If you haven't heard it, I definately recommend checking it out.

I heard it over New Years down in Savannah, at a party, right after her kickass version of Cohen's "Dance Me To the End of Love". My friend and I flipped when we heard BTB. Makes an awesome torch song, and the backing band is great. Dark and murky.

while i like madeleine peyroux her cover just didnt do much for me. its not that she was singing it bad.. rather it seemed to me that the song didnt fit her voice.

Yeah, but it's ok. And REALLY, you need a new avatar. It's not like that one isn't cool, I just think of owl eyes when I see it....

I hate to beg but does anyone have a copy of her cover of Between the Bars that you could send me? PM me if you can, thanks. :)
I've tried to like her, but I just can't get past the fact that she's doing an imitation of Billie Holiday. I find it very distracting. Maybe it's her bad luck that she aleady sounds something like Billie, but I think she's deliberately playing it up. And all she can muster is the old, sad, choking Billie Holiday, not the young, incredible, powerful Billie Holiday. She may be good enough in her own right, but all I can think is, "You're not Billie Holiday."

Could someone repost a link to the song on yousendit? I haven't listened to the song in a long time and I want to see if my opinions have changed. I know I wrote above that I didn't really like her voice, etc, but that might've changed. I don't think I gave Madeleine a chance with my first listen.
:-o
Justing i think posted a while ago. Its the only thing i have. :-o

I first heard heard her on some public radio program, and I initially thought I was listening to some Billie Holiday recording... then I heard her sing "Between the Bars". Very impressive. She has been playing concerts here in Boston and each time I see those ticket prices getting higher and higher. She is becoming better known and seems to command a pretty strong following.
The one thing I really like is when other artists cover Elliott's songs. I think you will see more covers as time goes by... ;)

I think so too, hopefully they end up being quality covers.
