This'll just be updated throughout the year. All of the movies I see through the year will just be magically stuck in here. And then, we'll have the best one! I don't know how long it'll last, but at least it'll always be on the first page.
So. Plus, for no reason at all, I changed my rating scale.

Out of 100...pretty much the same as i've always used, only having it out of 100 at least stops the ratings from getting too similar. All depends on just how fine the film is, I guess.
Well...i'm sad, so i'll just throw this out.

how can you give a movie an exact percentage though? do you add up and divide between different categories like performances, dialogue, direction, etc.?
Reginald I. Perrin
01-30-2005, 11:36 AM
I don't. It's mostly an estimate, based on what you said, but hardly exact.

Smashing idea, Will!
I'm not sure it's such a smashing idea to give Network a meagre B though!
Oh yes, and all the movies I see will be first-viewings only (Make it fairer, anyway, seeing as Network and the Conversation both got perfect scores)

haha, well i'm more into "movies" than "film" i suppose. i could see its merits but ultimately some of the themes (or actually perhaps more their presentation/exposition) seemed a little dated. i had a similar feeling when i first watched citizen kane. it depends tho - for example, i liked "the conversation" a lot and i never get bored of watching westerns.

You really liked The Last Wave more than Picnic at Hanging Rock? I thought The Last Wave was pretty bad. Hanging Rock isn't great or anything, but artistically it's a much superior film!

I wasn't too pleased with either - I'd been led by a friend to expect great things - but I found The Last Wave somewhat less limp a film.

No matter how cliche it is now, I like the impressionistic style of Picnic at Hanging Rock. Despite the fucking rock is meant to be a phallic symbol, and all that obvious imagery.
I had to study Peter Weir films for a class. My professor considered him an auteur, which in some senses he is, like he employs similar themes and artistic elements, but that's about it.
In retrospect, we studied Kieslowski right after Weir, and unfairly, it made Weir look mediocre at best.

I was only twelve or so when I saw it, so perhaps the tropical setting, Harrison Ford, and something being constructed were enough for me, but I thought it was okay.

I really love The Good The Bad and the Ugly and the Clint ones, I just couldn't get into this one. It was too slow. It probably didn't help that I was watching it relaxed on a dining room chair with headphones on my laptop cos my flatmate is gross.
Reginald I. Perrin
06-15-2005, 09:13 AM
You watch again!
Updated with: Floating Weeds, Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, Fahrenheit 9/11 and Rocky II.
It was just slow and so so western. Ok, that sounds stupid but it was too over the top even for my expectations. Even just the very last scene where it peels off and everyone is busy building the railroad town. I much prefer the variety and full on gunslinging of The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
Updated with a couple films as well.
Reginald I. Perrin
07-11-2005, 11:45 AM
Indeed, it is so very western. The film is pretty much a homage/coda to the western films that Leone loves - there's plenty of small homages to Western films, some that can be caught up on (The scene with Jill riding to her hometown was shot in Monument Valley - used so famously in John Ford films), others that you wouldn't even know unless you listened to the commentary (Christopher Frayling remarks that the scene with the father and son shooting birds is reminiscent of Shane, for instance, and equates Harmonica's Harmonica to Johnny's Guitar). I can see why it wouldn't be liked due to it being so Western, although I personally love it. I didn't like it on first viewing either, though.
List updated with the worst film I've seen this year, the Football Factory.
Yeah, I listened to some of the commentary to try to get a better appreciation for why it was so well regarded. It made sense, but it just didn't appeal to me on first viewing. Maybe a second one would help but I already returned it in the mail.
