I don't know if there has been a review of Thumbsucker posted here yet, but the film just played at Sundance and Film Threat has a review up. One typo notwithstanding, it seems to be a pretty good review, although it doesn't give any specifics about which songs are used in the picture.

Although there's no release date set (I don't think there's a distributor yet), I'd guess it'll be in theaters within a year.

Has anyone read/heard anything further about the soundtrack since that brief interview with Tim Delaughter?

Two points for missing out not only the second 'T' but also the second 'L' (someone was gonna say it, I might as well), but in my mind they made up for it by making a Linus reference :)

I'll be interested to see what this is like. I never got Mike Mills or why bands were even slightly interested in working with him. I always found his work to be very amateur and dull.

Really? I've always felt the opposite. Ah well, potatoes, potottoes.

Perhaps I've not seen enough, but the music videos I have seen as well as the Air documentary 'Eating, Sleeping, Waiting, and Playing" left me wondering why they didn't at least go with Lance Bangs.

Is there anything of his in particular that you suggest I should check out? Something that might change my opinion?

Well, I'm actually more familiar with his design work than his video projects, but I like both. He designed the inserts for Air's album Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. (He also did that weird sloppy cover for the promo version of Figure 8, if you've seen that. Charlie has a little pic of it on the site.) That's how I first came across him. But he really got his start doing work with the clothing label X-Large, from what I can tell. He worked there for some time, but still did other projects as well. I actually got to see some of his work in the "Beautiful Losers" tour (also featured Terry Richardson, Geoff McFetridge, Ryan McGuiness, Ryan McGinley, Mark Gonzalez and Ed Templeton, among many others), and there were quite a few cool designs of his that I'd never seen before.

I guess I just really like what he can do with a simple line structure. His images are often very simple, but really elegant and beautiful as well. Anyway, that's how I feel. As Ted Leo would say, "You're invited to decline!" :)

:jismjismjism: Okay that's absolutely brilliant. I guess I'd known he did the art for Moon Safari but had forgotten. I just wish more of his film work reflected the same aesthetic. We'll see :) The 'Sexy Boy' video was pretty amazing though, but anyone who bought the 'Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time' DVD had to suffer through his video for 'National Anthem'. Ugh.

All of that said, I just may have to look into getting his design book ;)

:::hands Alex a tissue:::

 Well, cool, I'm glad I could show you this stuff then! :)

(And incidentally, with all this winking going on, it looks like Erica May may (maymay! :D ) be looking into this?

And Franky, yes, this is a full length film directed by Mike. Supposedly it's going to feature some new/possibly unheard Elliott songs. I'm quite curious!

Oh, and here's the weird cover Mike did for the Fig 8 promo that had everyone scared it was the final design, haha. If you can make it out, the person's eyes (Elliott? D: ) are made out of an 8. Silly image, I'm sure just done as a gag. Makes me smile though. :)

There is a little piece about thumdsucker in this paper:

"Mike Mills’ “Thumbsucker” is a more satisfying, albeit scattershot, look at teen angst. Set to the tunes of the Polyphonic Spree and Elliott Smith (who had committed to doing the entire soundtrack before passing away in 2003), “Thumbsucker” follows high-schooler Justin (newcomer Lou Pucci) through sexual awakening, Adderall highs and thumbsucking shame and features a resonant performance by Vincent D’Onofrio as Justin’s dad, a former football star with a paralyzing Peter Pan complex.

But despite quite a few stellar scenes, “Thumbsucker” is incomplete, with a hazy relationship between Justin and his mom (Tilda Swinton) and an unnecessary thread involving Keanu Reeves as a New Age orthodontist."

it seems really interesting despite K. Reeves....
and I didn't know Elliott was supposed to do the entire soundtrack!
