How long has this group been together?
Who are the original members?
Who are the great past-members?
How much did Elliott know about us?
What are the sites greatest achievments?

I have been lurking around here for quite a while and decided that i really want to be a part of it all. it is very neat and rare to be a part of a group of people with similar tastes, knowledge and perspective. I live in a small town in Maine. I have never met -in person- another Elliott Smith fan, though i have tried to convert all friends and family to the cause.

Anyway, i have read most of the threads and have found the group as a whole to be consistantly kind, informed, helpful and real. most seem to have good taste also. i have researched many of the bands that i hadn't heard of before and have often been pleased.

So now i have grown curious...

Thanks,
Matt

p.s. there seem to be a lot of matts here??

a. "this group" is really a relative term. sweetaddy has been in existence, as a blamo board, since january of 2000, if i'm not mistaken. i wouldn't know for certain, though, since i joined early february of 2000.

b. me. and many others. too many to list, in fact.

c. ooh. there is harry, who has gone on to write books, ThereGoesMyGun, who has gone on to be famously famous in the UK. those are the ones, i guess, who have gone on to real life fame and fortune (?). there are also many many more who were great in my heart.

d. he knew of us, and wrote on here from time to time. i'm not sure as to how much he knew. we probably freaked him out.

e. the most well-remembered things are probably the board wars in 2000.

It's gonna be hard to get the complete history from us, because this board is now like Sweet Addy: The Next Generation.

(which is at least better than being Sweet Addy: The College Years.)

When i first started posting here under my other name, it seemed like all the OG sweetaddy brothas and sistas were posting less and less and it was sorta fractured 'cause there was no new release and everyone was getting tired of each other. and obnoxious newbies like myself.

notable moments include some snazzy tribute cd's and when quoc used to be here ALL THE TIME and post like a few hundred times a day. and when woody had no flood control and would BLITZ out. and of course, when i arrived. :oh:

and of course the love affairs and cat fights, those were pretty cool, too.

This was the populated, colourful place (opposed to the lovely white minimalist quiet place :( ) If you got bored or wanted a break, you could visit(bait) the Smashing Pumpkins or General boards or enjoy the Radiohead troutness.

Good lord, what did Elliott think when he visited?!

Hope he had a laugh, anyway..

Less sincerity. More cynicism.

Less familial. More like a bar scene.

Right or wrong?

Eh.

The board hasn't changed all that much. It was kinda hard to be accepted in before October, just like some would say it's kinda hard to be accepted now. I lurked for a LOOOOOONG time before I got the guts to finally sign up for an account and then I didn't post for like two weeks after signing up. There was a fair amount of cynicism before October (everyone had basicly given up on seeing the new album until May or June when we found out about the new 7"). So I'd say that everything is as it was then, just with a lot more people. There was even a fair amount of flamage back then.. just not as overwhelming.

So yeah, no real difference except the names and the size.

i have noticesd that there seem to be certain unstated "rules" here. i have also noticed a certain "party line" and that the violation of above will result in a swift scolding.

one thing that i think i have noted is a an aversion to analyzing His songs for meaning.
For Example: It seems more acceptable to ask "What does Pitselah mean to you personally" and less to ask "Did Elliott ever tell the story behind his songs. I would like to hear his explanation of what he was thinking when he wrote No Name #6"

That's mostly because elliott didn't really talk about the meanings behind his songs, and some of the explanations for the ones he did talk about directly contradict things he said other times about those songs.

No Name #6 he said nothing about that I have ever read or heard. Then there are songs like Rose Parade which in some interviews elliott said was merely about the parade and other times said was about how some people 'grandstand'.
Son of Sam Elliott said wasn't about the killer but was about more about a feeling or something. There was a thread about that one a few months ago which took a decidedly negative tone when elliott's explanation of the song meaning was taken to be utter bullshit and from there the thread decended into a burning and flaming mess. That's the way most of the threads about elliott's song meanings tend to go sadly. Because once someone posts an interview snippet or a transcription of something he said live, people either say "Oh" and the thread dies after three posts, or people start bitching about how his explanation is completely wrong and their interpretation is what he really intended.

On top of that, people are often quite analytical and says things like "angeles is about the music industry" of "between the bars is about alcohol". I think, however, it's not so black and white. A great artist can communicate on different levels, whether the medium be words, paint, sculpture, etc. That is why it so sounds so dorky when one person seeks for the divine answer. It would be cool if there were more discussions (minus the antagonism). I'm pretty new, too, but this is what I've seen in all sorts of places where art is appreciated

I meet lurkers in L.A. when I go out ALL THE TIME!!!! (OMG! You're jack fate...blah, blah, blah). I feel like a cast member from the Real World when that happens. So my only advice for all the lurkers is START POSTING!!!!!!

you'll get your 15 minutes (seriously!), or a round of free drinks (for reals!) the next time you leave your computer at home, and go outside to an Elliott friendly bar. :-D

In the beginning God created the heaven and the board.

And the board was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be posters: and there were posters.

And God saw the posters, that [they were] good: and God divided the posters from the lurkers.

And God called the posters Cool, and the lurkers he called Hip. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the boards. and let it divide the posters from the lurkers.

And God made the firmament, and divided the posters which [were] under the firmament from the lukers which [were] above the firmament: and it was so.

And God called the firmament Sweetaddy. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

And God said, Let the lurkers under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let Sweetaddy appear: and it was so.

And God called Sweetaddy 'the coolest board'; and the gathering together of the posters and lurkers called he Community; and God saw that [it was] good.

And God said, Let the board bring forth friends, the lovers yielding kids, [and] the enemies yielding wars after their kind, whose fights [are] in itself, upon the board: and it was so.

And the board brought forth Meet-ups, [and] friends yielding friends after his kind, and the Meet-ups yielding cd's, whose songs [were] in itself, after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.

And the evening and the morning were the third day.

And God said, Let there be smilies in the firmament of the board to divide the text from the emotions; and let them be signs, and for happiness, and for joy, and tears:

......

etc. ;) :-p

That's because you guys can be so damn territorial over your board that you sometimes lash out at the simplist questions made by newer members, then start gang banging on the member for about 7 pages, which tends to end up ugly.

maybe..my memory is hazy

It was very very difficult to be "accepted".
took a long time
never really actually happened

there are people here who have known each other for years. The core of sweetaddy is made up of these folk. It is understandly almost impossible for a new member who has no affiliation with these people to become 'another one of the guys'.

ach. out of interest, what happens when you get accepted? is there a prize or a secret handshake or something? I guess you can only measure by your own perception (or how many secret handshakes you know) but still... things like this are fuzzy and depend on internal factors (how you measure acceptance) and external factors (if I lived in peru I wouldn't have met half the people i have). I can happily say that I'm not only friends with people that joined when i joined. I see it must seem a core to anyone who joins, but the board isn't based on anything as sinister as age or duration or whathaveyou, only common interests and experiences.

also, at the risk of making anyone paranoid, there are at least five secret handshakes.....

I think I was here when you arrived Lindsey? Maybe not?

I liked the board war. We had been tipped off thet "they" were coming and it felt exciting as no one had experienced a web war before, and we didn;t know what to expect.

I liked when we started using html for the first time (before there were font/colour/size buttons) and the first picture threads - and the shockwave files.

I liked it when Scotland had a major contingent always present. Quality posters those boys.

I liked the final result of the two tributes, but it was a hasstle putting it together.

I was there for the brestathon too.

Most of all I have enjoyed the meet-ups and the lasting friendships that they, combined with the board itself, have brought me.

And how come I ony know four of the secret handshakes? Who's holding out on me?

I still miss Lizard King, he was such a sweetheart. Anyone heard from him? And the Clown guy, Alistair.

When I first got here I think it was late 99. I remember Waifstar, Beth, Charlie, Mike, Lynsey, JamesA, There Goes My Gun (I adore Sammy, his posts were always quality! He was the first friend I made here. Wish he'd come back but I guess he's busy being famous and stuff)

And all the brits would start these incredibly witty threads and they would be so funny I'd laugh about them for days.

And I remember Jaf sticking his flag into the newly reborn sweetaddy and declaring it Jaftopia.

And I remember the arrival of Woody and how all the girls swooned over him.

And I remember all the crushes, all the hook ups, the first marriage and baby, the fights, the drama....oh dear the drama.

And I remember Elliott posting and some thought it wasn't really him and some did.

And of course, most of all I remember the ta-ta's.

Was I not dedicated for 3 years from Dec 99 to Dec 02?
I moved to China afterward for crying out loud. I still love you guys.

I know China's too far away. For an American, it's on the other side of the world. We used to make jokes about digging holes straight through the ground into China.
Anyway, here I am. Hope you guys had fun at the gig. I might stick around more, but there's sooo many people on here now. I get lost. ;)

Well it's been here since 2000, when blamo converted from a free bulletin board system through ezboards.com to our ubb boards, when evenually became the vb boards a few years later.

it all started when i got addicted to elliott in 1998 through a guy named dave asselin who runs xero.com, he was a huge smashing pumpkins fan, and i happened to also run a large sp site, blamo.org, but my tastes were changing and he had a boot list of tapes, and one happened to be elliott that he had when elliott was in boston in 98. so i had a listen and loved it, then i got either/or and soon after xo and was hooked. so i wanted to start an elliott smith web site myself, so i was researching other sites to see what was out online and ran into charlie's little site on tripod. i noticed he did exactly what i wanted to do, so instead of duplicating the efforts i offered to help/join him in anyway i could, so together we joined sweetaddy.com on blamonet.com also i helped him create some sections like the q+a section on sweetadeline.net. All of this happened in the Winter of 2000.

Original administration members of course were Charlie, Erin, and Wallace.

My little story about Jon :
One of the funniest moments we had in Manchester happened quite late in the night. Someone (i dont know who) was singing some Elliott song (i think maybe Bottle Up) and at some point there's some harmony in the song, the kind of backing vocals everyone sings for themselves when they listen to someone else singin the song. Jon was there at this very moment wanting to harmonize the best way he could (and actually when Jon is sober and not tired he can sing pretty well) but he was drunk and tired and his harmony went something like "AAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhoooooooooohhhh*voice breaks*" i think quoc, heidi and i laughed for 5 minutes straight....

okay i'm not too sure the story was spectacular as i told it but i dont care, i'm still laughing when i think of it.

and yeah it's funny you mentionned Jon because when he first joined Sweetaddy we exchanged 2 or 3 pm's. Those PM I only remembered yesterday when looking at my PMs after Aaron mentionned a spring cleaning.

there were tons of meetups and oodles of meet up pictures, and some meet up beat ups. i have photographic proof somewhere.

for some reason, i remember lisa, but i don't know why she stands out. didn't blunar take a flan trip across the country?

i missed the breast thread :( and blake wouldn't let me start it again. but i think the best part of sweetaddy history is when charlie became 'the charlie' :-D

I feel it is my sweetaddy patriotic duty to mention at least once, in every thread like this, that I christened this board with its nickname, "sweetaddy", in the summer of 2000, while making fun of it (in a secretly jealous way) on esnet. It had just been another anonymous forumid = (not always 5, i think, but I don't remember what) on boards.blamo.org, and the name stuck as a moniker and charlie then took it upon himself to buy the domain and linky link it up with the blamo board. This only serves to expand the blunacious legacy, really, and to kill this thread, as this self-important post always does. But history must be known! And I am willing to make the sacrifice.

I also attempted to change the name of the board to "S. Tiddy", with only varying degrees of success.

As part of the promotion, I even marketed this retarded t-shirt, which sold in droves, and I made my fortune off of it:

And God said, Let there be smilies in the firmament of the board to divide the text from the emotions; and let them be signs, and for happiness, and for joy, and tears:

......

etc. ;) :-p

Add this to the creation myth pile. Oddly similar to the first post in the thread, hmm...

(P.S. I too saw the "breast thread". I can't believe none of the perverts who followed it saved it.)

I really wish there was an easier way to keep up with Sweetaddy people who have left. Or at least see if they're still living. Like, once there was this guy, Jerry, or something? Anyway, he got really sick, (Proudyoungandirish was his name, I think), and eventually he stopped posting when he was getting taken care of more seriously. Whatever happened with that? Or Cookiemonster, who was perhaps going to come to the 2001 Quasi Portland show, and offered some rather hip reports of Portland concerts from time to time, but disappeared from the board altogether like a ghost of death's past. Or beth/whoever, who DID come to the Portland show. All the lonely people, where do they all belong?

i have noticesd that there seem to be certain unstated "rules" here. i have also noticed a certain "party line" and that the violation of above will result in a swift scolding.

one thing that i think i have noted is a an aversion to analyzing His songs for meaning.
For Example: It seems more acceptable to ask "What does Pitselah mean to you personally" and less to ask "Did Elliott ever tell the story behind his songs. I would like to hear his explanation of what he was thinking when he wrote No Name #6"
That is sound aesthetic practice, actually. Perhaps...what do you think this work expresses...?

As to what he was thinking when he wrote...few artists really know that...and if Elliott were the exception, do you think he would tell us the unvarnished truth about it and thus limit interpretations of his work for all time to come?

I do think he sometimes tried to offer up something when asked...generally it was a hoot, imho.

Welcome, welcome, welcome, btw. I look forward to your input (including what you think songs might be meaning).

Proof of Malady:

Stickman [02-01-2003]

I sit here shooting blanks out of emptiness.
Ain’t nothing real he’d want to kill—maybe your time I guess.
I sit and spin the world and its flipside,
And I listen backwards for meanings
Cause I’m a stick man.

I draw from memory the stillest kind of life.
The sign after sign—you know, paint is the sharpest knife.
Project what’s done so everyone can see the severe color reversal.
And I’m a stickman—frames that go one-by-one.
If I sped it up you’d see I’m on the run
From some monster off-screen—cue in sun—
It slowly makes me blue. Envy turns me green.
Hate might paint me red if I load my magazine,
But not just now when it’s easy to stay clean,
When no one knows where you’re bleeding.
And I’m a stickman.
A sick man.
I’m a stickman.

Stickman [studio]

I sit here shooting blanks out at emptiness.
Ain’t nothing real I wanna kill—maybe time I guess.
I sit and spin the world on its flipside, and I listen backwards for meaning
Cause I’m a stick man—I live with one dimension dead,
Trying not to think too many moves ahead.

I draw from memory the stillest kind of life—
Slide after slide—you know, paint’s the sharpest knife.
Project what’s done for everyone to see—to me it’s just a reversal.
And I’m a stickman—frames that go one-by-one.
If I sped it up you’d see I’m on the run
From some monster off-screen—cue in sun—
It slowly makes me blue. Envy turns me green.

I can't remember what there was before Sweetaddy. I know that there was a Sweetadeline before this board was created, and that I used to visit it all the time and contribute to it when I could, in the q&a place. But I feel there was some social aspect to that too.....but everything is kinda blank before Sweetaddy came along....

It's so great to see so many of the old timers come back. We need a sweetaddy phone book or something so we can keep better track of each other.

I remember we thought about a sweetaddy buddy system once, where someone especially close to you would be responsible for telling the board if you decided to disappear so no one worried. It never actually happened, but for a time, it seemed like a good idea.

Pitselehfrog and Blackie hooked me up with extra ES tickets. I never see them around here anymore.

Daphne and rebekka had been so kind upon my arrival.

Preciousonlyson started me on my way to a ES bootleg collection

I remember there was a ES song elimination contest, and there were secret alliances. I had one with Dr Hibbert to save his song (Angeles) at elimination time if he saved mine (Independence Day). Then there were super secret double under cover alliances too.
Not many like that contest stating all the songs are the best. I thought it was great fun.

I learned not to mention politics very quickly.

What about when (silke?) or some one began erasing all their post counts till they got into the single digits in a time when everyone was trying top have the highest post count.
That person would post all day and still have only a 7 post count. Great laughs!

Its been great seeing all the Names come out of the woodwork for this thread.

Oh yea meep, I cannot forget the time we ripped our shirts of at the crescendo of When the Levee Breaks , and the sweetaddy ladies went wild. Well, maybe it was just Sunflower.
Either way.
