i hear he doesn't play guitar live anymore, just organ. maybe age is finally started to affect him. :-o

but there should be a new album relatively soon. i guess he's been writing and recording new stuff for a bit now, and hopes to finish it fairly soon. very exciting.

No offense I hope its a good show and all, but I saw Bob twice and both times he was absolutely terrible. I know just about every song and you couldn't even tell what song he was singing until you heard a familiar line. I hope Bob has a good day that day.

I would just like to add that I love Bob. He just doesn't always put on a great show.

i saw him a couple of years ago at the fair, the first time i saw him. he's older, his voice hasn't been the same since he was sick a number of years ago. but it's still him & there was something magical about it, even if i didn't recognize a lot of songs with new arrangements. he mostly played keys, but did play some surprisingly rockin guitar licks. that was back when charlie sexton was in his band.

There's still the aura of just "seeing Bob" that never makes seeing him get old. You'll have a swell time at the show. Enjoy.

i have heard that his shows can be hit or miss.. but when i saw him back in the summer of '99, he was great!! he just put on a great show.. and he played his acoustic guitar and everything!! i would find it strange if he doesn't play the guitar on stage anymore..... but i only saw him that one time...

i'm sure it's going to be great kayleen!! <3

you might be interested in the is recent Dylan review, in which he does play electric guitar (but only after his keyboard breaks). it was a surprise show at a newly refurbished/re-opened SF venue, which apparently Dylan played at to directly snub the current clear channel monopoly on other SF venues (e.g. The Fillmore)

okay, here's why i said the thing about him not playing guitar live anymore:

somebody i know saw him earlier this year and he just played organ the whole night. this person spoke to someone else in the audience who informed him that bob hasn't played guitar at all on that tour. this was early this year, maybe he plays guitar from time to time, i dunno. but this is what i've heard, and it seems to have been backed up by a few sources.

(edited to acknowledge the above post. i didn't see til after i posted)

When I saw Dylan a couple years ago, he was playing guitar. This is the first I've heard of him not playing it, and if this is the case, it's gotta be the first tour he's done this on. I've got dozens of Bob boots, and I've never heard him not playing.

Bob was good when i saw him, and any show I've heard him play has been good. I don't think too many people enjoy how he sings now. He chooses to sing that way, BTW. If you can stand his voice, chances are you'll like his show.

Yeah, I saw him about a month or so ago and he didn't play any guitar. I also couldn't understand a single thing he said the entire time, even songs that I knew. I was sort of far from the stage and it was outdoors, but still. It was a cool experience though.

I just saw him a little while ago, and this explains all. He played keys all night & they were all new arrangements.

It was such a great night though

I've seen Bob a few times. The first time was just to say that I had seen him. I didn't particularily care for the show, but that didn't stop me from seeing him the next two times around. I think that there is just "something" about being at a Bob Dylan concert that makes it special. People watching at Dylan concerts is a lot of fun too!

and watching his legs at shows is always fun, too. my sister and i got a kick (ha!) out of that the times that we went to shows.

he's really good live. most of the time. (3/4 times i saw him, he was  and the other time was more   ).

oh bob dylan.
well
i could lie and say im not disappointed that he will only be playing the organ, or whatever it is he will be playing that isnt a guitar, but that would be a lie, and im not a liar.
this is because i look up to mr. dylan mostly because of his guitar skills, and lyricism of course as well...but supposedly that wont be heard too clearly either.
sigh.
but i am not one to look to the bad side of things.
i still cant wait to go, and i hope that the show i go to is a hit and not a terrible terrible miss.

AND
i love people watching as well.!
so that will be fun.

im sure it will be a lovely long weekend in upstate new york.

:-D

...i had a professor once that resembled bob dylan...i wonder if he'll be there... HAHA.
that man is my hero.
but because he is so cool
i bet hes on this board
so i wont name names.
haha.
oh my life....

i was looking up information about bob dylan not playing guitar live anymore, and searched for "doesn't play guitar live" on google. This was the fourth result! Weird stuff.

ive seen him twice, march 2004 and november 2004... both times i was either front row or a bit farther back... he didnt play guitar.. always off to the left side on the organ with the harmonica of course.

yes new song arrangements, but guys, the same song after 40 years gets BORING, i think it only shows how fucking talented he is that he can make it into something new, and it only highlights the brilliance of his lyrics.

both shows were fabulous.

it is true, theres just something about being at a dylan show, seeing him up there, its such a rush. i adored every second of it.

damn i should go to this rochester show, the last show i went to was there! too short notice though, gotta work :darn:

i should really check the website more oftan!

I saw him twice last year and two time this year. Last year I saw him in Chicago in the spring, and in the fall in Columbus, Ohio. Both good shows, but the setlist on the fall tour was pretty darn good! He broke out some tunes that he hadn't played for a bit, and I saw some of my favorites. This spring I saw him again in Chicago, twice, and with Merle Haggard and Amos Lee opening for him. These shows were the best yet. Of course his voice has changed, and no, he doesn't play guitar anymore, only the keyboards, but right now he is on top of his game creatively performance wise. There are some true dylanphiles (bobcats) who will argue to the death over which years he's been best during his current "never ending tour" (88-present) but personally I feel he's at his pinnacle. I much prefer his material from '85 onward and I think he knows that he's in a much different place now creatively then he was when he was fueled by amphetamines and the culture of the 60's.

All I can say is if you have a chance to go see Dylan, first off, you deserve to see the man perform before he dies, he is getting up there, and secondly, you should go to form your own opinion of the man yourself. If you go in there to see 64 year old Dylan and expect to hear Mr. Tambourine Man ala Bringing It All Back Home, then don't go. If you appreciate the maturation of musical artists, this is a once in a lifetime event!

Enjoy the show in Rochester :)
