If you don't have a camera or any fans in your area, I would try to borrow a camera from someone and just tape yourself. Its all going to be edited and mishmashed together so it won't just be you all by your lonesome talking for twenty minutes about Elliott. :)
I'm all about people in areas isolated from other fans sending in tapes of just themselves. I want a clear representation of who Elliott's fans are...all of us. :)
Even if you can't get ahold of a camera, you can still be a part. Write down your answers to the sample questions, a letter to Elliott, anything you want to express in this project and send it to me and we will find a way to make it fit in. :)

Here are some questions to give you an idea. You can use them or come up with your own or both. :)
Questions for fans:
How did you find Elliott's music?
What draws you to Elliott's music?
How has Elliott's music impacted your life?
How does Elliott's music make you feel?
Who have you connected with over Elliott's music? How did you connect with them?
Do you think that Elliott is accurately portrayed by the media? Why or why not?
How do you like to remember Elliott?
What kind of fans do you think Elliott's music attracts?
Share your favorite Elliott story or memory.
Questions for friends/family:
What has your experience with Elliott's fans been like?
Do you feel that Elliott is accurately portrayed in the media? Why or why not?
What do you think attracts people to Elliott's music?
How do you like to remember Elliott?
How much has his charity raised to date?

oh it was in that homemade dvd... the interviewer is asian and the camera men try to get "cool we're hanging out" type of views... like the camera angles are tilted and its halrious... the interviewer didn't notice Elliott's reaction to her word "cofufal" and i bet if she noticed it and joked around with him more she could have gotten a better interview

Me and SweetAddy member Rankel made a flyer ( mostly Rankel, :) )

You may use it and change the city/info if you'd like.
We have two different designs. Both are in MS Word format.
You can get them below.

I've a question for the men at large here.
I live in litteraly the middle of nowhere, Wyoming, (a town of less than 2000 ppl) and as far as I know, my family and some of my close friends are the only ones in the valley that have ever come under the beautifuly destructive influence of the capitol E.
This project has sparked my interest, as i am an avid Smithy listener, and am currently working on several songs dedicated to the legend.
The question in question is this:
would you dig / take an entry from Wyoming?

Hello dare POINTY!
Me and my daughter Maggie (nobodys_baby14) think this is a swell idea! She's especially excited! Maggie has access to video 8 and DV. I have a disposable camera :snail: . Anyway, we're going to try to put something together. We might be able to help out others in the area, but that depends on her school schedule, my work schedule, and her step-father's thoughts on us borrowing he's expensive equipment :darn: .
I've seen some questions. Are those just suggestions? Maggie was thinking of either playing an Elliott song on guitar or one she wrote (with his inspiration  ).
I've been hit or miss on the board due to work, is there a date you're shooting for?
This is lovely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, feel free to sign up for w. virginia, you never know, there could be TONS of Elliott Smith fans in w. virginia. In fact, you might have the highest percentage of E.S. fans per capita and it might never be known if you did not bring them together and film them. :)
There is no end date. Um, I'd like to finish while I'm young. :) I'd like to have a finished product within three years. So, if you could get all footage in to me within the next 6-9 months or so, that should be fine. :) As for playing an Elliott song, I have no idea what the legal ramifications of that are, and we won't find out till the end. After everything is finished and pieced together, I will submit the project to Elliott's manager who will then either give us permission to use his music (or...I guess...not) and that's when we'll have to hire the Elliott impersonators. :darn: And if we can't find those, we'll have to go with Elvis impersonators. :darn: And that's when the documentary will get weird.

Hey, how's everyone?
First off, let me say this is AMAZING! It's just great to see so many Elliott fans working on this. Just amazing. For one I'm very excited about this project.
Now, the news from NYC--I was going to a concert tonight at the LES here in the city, and I decided to take my flyers with me and post them around the neighborhood. So yeah, posted them at record stores, cafes, bars, concert venues (including Lit, where one of Elliott's last shows took place).
Now both Luna Lounge and Max Fish are a block away from where the concert was going to be, so I said, I'll drop by. (Both bars were favorites of Elliott when he lived here.)
Luna was crowded for some reason, so I decided to go there some other time. But at Max I got to talk to the bartender. He was quite excited about this, and told me he was going to show the flyer and tell about the project to people who knew Elliott!!! He said there's a few people who got to talk to him when he hung out at the bar and stuff. And that they'd be glad to talk about him.
So yeah, that'd be awesome if they get in touch with remybalon and me. I also have to go back and drop off more flyers there for people to take and see.
Also, I taped a flyer to my shoulder bag, and at the line for the concert a girl literally accosted me about the flyer. She said her friend is a big fan and will get in touch with us.
So yeah, by the length of this I'm sure you can tell I'm excited. Also, those flyers work! I was amazed by how people at the places I posted them at were enthusiastic about it.
I'm just happy about this I guess :)

I guess I will try to film myself. I have a digital camera that will let me record a few minutes of video, then I can burn it to CD. Is that alright? I'm sure I can bum a camera off someone if not. This is almost to much for me. I'm not one that likes any attention focused on myself. I thought about it for awhile and Elliott has given me so much through his music, that I am going to force myself to do this, as horrible as it may be. Having someone in the area to share this with would make it alot easier. Is there noone out there? Ohio? West Virginia? Kentucky? Virginia? If not, I will grin and bear it. All for the love of Elliott. Aria K

Hello,
I would love to sign up for this project. I co-own a record store in Easthampton, Massachusetts called Night Owl Records(which is in Western Mass) and we're having a tribute concert to Elliott coming up on December 4th. It's being put on by kids (ages 13-17) who were completely inspired by Elliott just under a year ago. My girlfriend (and co-owner of the store) was in a play with a group of younger kids and one of them asked her to turn her on to some great music. Elliott CD's were borrowed and now this one girl has turned her whole high school onto Elliott. How unbelievable is that? In the land of Blink 182 garbage there is a large group of young kids being inspired by something wonderful. It's hard to think about all of this without becoming very emotional. Elliott was a huge inspiration to me, and most certainly my favorite songwriter of all time.
We'll try to video tape the concert and interview some of the kids involved...I'm not sure if this is the right way to sign up for this and if it's not could someone forward to wherever it is that I'm supposed to sign up?
Cheers,

So, I'd like to offer advice if anyone wants it... Just basic stuff, so that you won't take the precious time
to record your footage and it turns out rubbish... (trust me, i've been there)
So, feel free to discount it, criticize it, add to it, whatever.... But here's my 2 cents....
Suggestions:
1. Check the lighting.... Just like regular photography you should have the sun or light source behind you...
(unless yer going for the effect) Search for "3 point lighting" on google for more information.
(and watch your shadows...)
2. Zoom buttons pretty much suck. Unless you like "The Real World" or use them moderately.
3. Different angles are cool..
4. The rule of thirds (see here (http://www.videomaker.com/scripts/article_print.cfm?id=9231) )
5. Sound... well, sound on most cameras kinda sucks.... just do the best you can and
if possible, wear headphones... That way you can hear it closest to how it actually sounds..
(if your camera has headphone outs...)
uhhhh...
6. Have fun? Yeah, have fun.... And if you have any questions... I mess and obsess with DV and film....
and I have all kinds of DIY, low/no cost techniques....
feel free to PM me..

Hi POINTY and Co.
I talked to you a while back about filming the tribute i did for Elliott on my radio show...
Anyhow, I just wanted to confirm with you, that yes, I had someone come and stand in the studio and film me doing my "shpeeeeal" about the new record etc. At one point it felt really stupid and weird as I just about breakdown bawling while "fond farewell" plays over the loud speaker. Anyhow, I thought it may be good footage of someone talking about Elliott over the air. If you'd be intrested in receiving this footage, please let me know where to send it. Thank you.

That's ok grant, I see you removed the photo; thanks for that.
It's just that I mean: When is a picture of a blood drenched clown, in a padded room, with the words "help me" written in blood on the walls, appropriate for any post?? It really wasn't a funny picture--the fact that the clown was grinning like a maniac didn't help things.
And knowing Elliott's life, I honestly thought you were making some type of sick joke...
But it's fine--thanks for removing it. And all's in the past...

Yeah, count me in, too!
The only problem is, I live in New Hampshire. I hardly know anyone in NH that likes Elliott, except for me. I would travel to Boston or anywhere in Mass. for the documentary though. I'll ask my friends in Southie if they want to be part of it, since they are huge fans of Elliott as well. Their band Appomattox, shows some influence.

My name is Alisha and I'm in the LA area I would love to do this with anyone in the LA area. My eamil address is Lostinreverie@hotmail.com or even my cell number is 702-497-9068. This is a great thing for the Elliott Smith fans to say what is in their hearts about someone that has shown them what music really is.

Hi my name is Steve MacIntyre, I'm 25 years old from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Elliott Smith's death although not shocking (besides the method) was deeply touching and obviously sad. I love his music and felt like I knew him how any fan would. I'd love to be a part of your documentary, I'll travel anywhere in the U.S. given enough notice.

No, no, it is definitely not too late to be a part of this project.
I wanted to poke my head in here and say that
1. I would like to establish a due date of 6/30/2005 for footage to be sent to me.
and
2. How is the filming going? Holla back and tell us what you got.
Hope you are all doing well...I took a job, a full time job, which is why I'm not around the board so much...but never you fear, I'm still here and working hard for you, my people. :D

Nope, its not too late at all. The footage needs to be with my by June 30th. Until then, have at it.
Someone asked what we're missing, i'm looking for fan interviews and footage of things that remind you of Elliott's music, you know, maybe a place you like to go to listen to him? Stuff like that.
I'm still updating the list in the first post of this thread. Look there for others in your area. We have lots of volunteers and I'm so happy!
I also received our first footage. I am very pleased with it, its beautiful. I won't say any more about it so the person responsible can share what they want to.

Hello Future Butterfliers~!
So... Alex, Rankel and Myself, RemyBalon began shooting
the NYC portion of Future Butterflies a couple weeks
ago. We have a great interview with Rob from the Luna
Lounge here in New York. He tells a beautiful story of
how he came to know Elliott and the relevance of XO and
Luna.
After we shot that, we were feeling ansty and I
edited together a little teaser of the footage. Keep in
mind that it's rough footage and hasn't been color balanced
or had anything done to it, for that matter. Just a rough
edit. Also, I have a great part of the interview in which
Rob talks about Elliott inviting him to watch the
pre-recorded 98' "Conan" episode with him and others over
at Max Fish that I'm gonna add at some point. It's a great story.
So, yeah. Just keep in mind it is a work in progress and
you should consider it a small part of a big thing.
Also, you should have high speed internet and speakers to
watch it. There is music involved... hehe.

So yeah, let us know what you guys think. Also, what's everyone else up to? Maybe we can start a thread or email list where all the "correspondents" can talk about what they've been up to? And about the project itself? Just an idea...
I love this project, it's so awesome. Everyone keep up the great work! Oh yeah, and let remybalon know what you thought of the little edit. You can say hi to me if you want to as well. :) See ya all later!

I think a thread to talk about progress is a great idea. Especially since this one is all big and intimidating now. :D
And I hope lots of people get a chance to see your clip, nyc peeps. :) It might be worthy of its own thread too, since there is no way for people to know its up here.
I like it, I think its great. I already told remybalon all this but it really hit the nail on the head for what I had in mind for this project. I love that its going to be so many different kinds of people, from kids videotaping themselves sitting on the floor of their rooms to club owners talking about knowing Elliott to...well, who knows? :)

Pointy,
I've finished production on the video and am currently shooting interviews with fans through next week. We'll probably be finished with post by mid-May.
I have a couple of quesitons, though:
Should we send the finished product on DV tape or like a burned DVD? What's the best format for the guy editing it?
Also---are we allowed to use Elliott's music as segues and transitions in our interview clips, or should we stick to original compositions?
--Karla
pointyjess
04-04-2005, 12:17 PM
We're going to go ahead and use Elliott's music and submit the finished product to his manager to take to all the people who have to give the OK for us to use it. If we don't get the OK, we'll have to go back and use other music.
But music is such a huge part of the story here, so I want to try with Elliott's music first.
Thanks for your help, I will get in touch with the editor and see which format he prefers. He said he can work with just about anything so if you want to just send both that's fine.
Also, remybalon might be helping with some editing so if he'd like to weigh in here, that'd be awesome.
I'm really excited about this project and really appreciate all the help, guys. :)

Hi Josh,
Add as many exclamation points as you like. :)
I don't know that anyone will submit actual footage of Elliott. There might be permission to be had with that. We do want to include his music and are hopeful that we will get permission to do that.
The documentary is meant to focus on the positive effects Elliott's music had on his fans' lives...there will be lots of interview footage, some nice things to look at, but I am not sure about actual Elliott footage. I won't go looking for it, but that doesn't mean someone won't submit it.
If you're looking to watch some Elliott footage for your own viewing pleasure, I believe there are some links around...including one of these stickied threads...I can't remember the exact title though.
And I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that we would like to hear from all Elliott fans...even if its just you in your room with a camcorder...this isn't about picture quality its about inclusion and appreciation of this musician who's touched all of our lives.
As far as a finish date goes, your guess is as good as mine. All footage will be submitted by June 30 of this year...then there will be post production which I imagine will take awhile. We will then submit the finished product for permission purposes and if the memorial fund will accept it at that point, the finished product will be turned over to them. They can do with it what they want, be it releasing it or having viewings of it...I have no idea. Hopefully whatever method will make the memorial fund the most money. :)
If anyone else has questions, feel free to ask. You can post them here or email me. Or PM me. Its whatever. :)

Hellooooo. So... Sorry for the delayed weigh in.
About the video format.... I think the 1st choice
is the DV tape, second is the DVD... In my opinion,
the original tape recording is always best to have.
Also, it's pefectly fine if it's rough footage. Like Pointy
said before, rough footage gives us more to work with.
Finally, I'm going to send out some emails this week to

in NYC. If there are any other people that would like to
record their content, I have a nice DV cam and my roommate
does sound, so we have the whole setup going. Feel free to
give me an email at futurebutterflies@lifefinderfilms.com
and we'll work it out. (ps. longest email addy ever!)
Anyway, all for now.
Carry on Future Butterfliers~!

Ooh--also, I don't remember if this has been mentioned before, but when you film people, please make sure you get them to sign some sort of consent form that says that we don't own this film and we know we're not making any money off of it and that they give permission for their image, etc. to be used. I don't think it has to be fancy, but we want them to know that we are giving the memorial fund the finished product with no strings attached.
The first post in this thread has a list of people to contact all over the world if you'd like to get involved.

Here's a form for that. It is a bit fancy and professional, but good to have.

Shoot, people wont even have to see the movie to realize what a profound impact Elliott made. His fans, maaking a documentary with the positive influence of a man and his music the first priority and all the proceeds going to charity? amazing. Great idea.
I have 0 access to a video camera here in Arizona, and from the looks of it, no access to an Elliott fan :(
Anyone in Tucson, Arizona or going to be passing through? I have no car or funds readily available to travel, so if ANYONE can help me out i'd appreciate it.

I have recently contacted Andrew Morgan who worked with Elliott, and he was kind enough to write me back.
He said he would be interested to participate, but he lives in Chicago and has no plan to go to LA before the end of June. So I thought that people who are in chicago may be interested to interview him.
You can contact him at awmorgan01@gmail.com
He is very very nice :)
I have also sent emails to the addresses in chicago at the top of this thread!

It looks like there will be a Future Butterflies online conference meeting this coming Monday, June 20th in the evening. The exact time has yet to be decided. For details, please PM me. They will be posted in this thread and the Future Butterflies progress report threads (I believe there are two) floating around the board.
Thanks for your hard work, everybody. :D

I'm editing the Atlanta fan documentary right now, and we have enough material to edit into a feature. So I'm organizing a tribute and premiering it next month, along with a music video I shot for my favourite Elliott Smith song as part this submission. It'll be at the Eyedrum here in Atlanta on July 13th, 7:30 pm if anyone's interested. :)
Questions: I know you said raw footage was easier to deal with but we have *alot* of footage. Is the editor going to be organizing this thing by city or area? Because I can edit you a shorter version (like, 10 minutes or so) if you'd like, and that might make it easier for you. You could just dump Atlanta or the South in as a segment and not have to worry about rummaging through tons of raw.
Also, would you prefer us not to use Elliott songs as transitions, just so if you choose to use his music it won't be redundant?
Last question: is it cool if I send the entire thing on Digibeta? I don't have access to mini-Dv, and we shot the music video on film.
Sweet. Thanks for being so awesome. Hopefully I'll be through post in the next two weeks...

I'm not sure how it'll be organized yet. I think we'll have a clearer picture once we see everyone's submissions.
You can send the raw or the edited or both. :) If you want to do one version with the music and editing and one just the raw stuff that would be fine. I don't want to make it too much of a pain for you. We will work with whatever we get.
I think you should send it in whatever format is easiest for you and we will just have to find volunteers who can work with that format. :)
Thanks again for helping.

It's Karla again. :)
I've finished the video and the documentary is half-cut, but with my work schedule I won't be able to finish it for at least another week.
Should I just send the preliminary version of the documentary and the video, or can it wait until next Wednesday for me to ship out? I'd like to send you the finished version, if I could...

So the Atlanta sumbission music video & documentary DVD is finished!
We had a premiere last week and it was fabulous. You wouldn't believe how many Atlanta Elliott Fans came out just from seeing a flyers or reading a small bit in the paper-----it was really, really encouraging. I think I might've broken down for a brief spell if I wasn't so nervous at the sizeable turnout.
Where do I send everything?
Feel free to e-mail me the info if you like:

I'd love to do something to contribute (I know it's really late), but I don't know how many Elliott fans are in my area. :( Is there anything I can do to contribute, Jess?
Edited because I've decided being "scared" to get in front of the camera is not an excuse.

Tom Cruise is scary.
And yes, there is plenty that can be done.
But I really don't want anyone to be afraid to get in front of the camera. Be proud to pledge your affection for this music! I want this to be an honest, accurate picture of who Elliott's fans are and it will not be a complete picture without you.

I was thinking about it today, and I think I could do it. :) My uncle has a camcorder and I could buy a tape to use. It was stupid of me to say that I didn't want to do it. Is there any deadline for the recording? It would probably just be my twin sister interviewing me... or me interviewing my sister. We'll see. The more I think about it the more i want to be a part.

i'd love to do something to contribute... i can write fairly well (professionally if need be), write/perform music, and have often thought of collaborating with some fellow fans on some sort of memorial - most recently of a film encompassing stories and happenings which I have either experienced firsthand, or which I heard and somehow connected the searching feeling of elliott's music.... i've thought of asking sweet addy users for stories and ideas, but wouldn't want to feel like another hopeless fanboy :-o ...
please contact me if i can help!
