I'm not sure if we should dredge up or reminisce (sp?) but I found these and read them again....and I dunno thought I'd put them together again in a neat little bundle....

I'm quite sure I'll delete this thread. elliott isn't working on maggies farm anymore that's for sure. fvuck.

i dont think elliott is the webmaster of dreamworks these days :P

...i ain't gonna work on maggie's farm no more...maybe charlie's farm...i've already planned to put at least a song up...maybe more than one...SOMEBODY ALREADY HAS, RIGHT?...now who might that be? THIS MESSAGE COURTESY OF THE BLETHER, but written by (h)hhelliott.

...i kiss goodbye the howling beast on the borderline that seperated you from me...(not my lyric, dammit.)

love to you all, even YOU and YERS,
elliott

I've had a sick feeling for a long time, but you will see LP6, IN LEGAL FORM (not that I care if people bootleg it). also, thanks for the photo album of letters and 2nd double disc. some of you sing better than me, of course. this record is not being held up by my (quite good) management or, some kind of corporate crap. I'm getting healthy after a bad time. 2 songs left to pick now from 40. i haven't died, y'know? (wished I had for awhile.) THIS MESSAGE APPEARS COURTESY OF THE BLETHER, but is from (h)hhelliott (i am not the blether, but i know...them.) sure seems like a lot of people on this thread running around with arrows in their hats. love to you all, m'friends. peace, (h)hhelliott (elliott)

...I ain't gonna work on maggie's farm no more...

obviously posting this feels both wrong and strangely cathartic....one little phrase in there sits so uncomfortably in my head now.

i'm not a hero and you shouldn't be hated, but yes, e. you're completely wrong. sometimes i get TIRED. (no sarcasm implied) i slept on my f***ing arm wrong after 2 bad shows. should i have refused to try? apparently...to some...not in my opinion. i mean, if i'd cancelled with people already in the building...hmmm, same thread I guess...but i'd have felt like i let folks down without a try. performance minus risk equals BOREDOM for you and me. personally, i despise BORING PERFORMANCE. this tangled thread, however, makes me SMILE. it's my birthday today, i feel OK, so please don't infer any anger here, just a little clarification. perfection is not my ideal. it's an insult to the gods. love to you (i mean it) yer friend,
(h)hhelliott

of course without context these are strange little ditties in context and in response to certain things they make perfect sense, but you'll have to do without context for now.

I just want to set the record pretty straight. You can believe this post or not but I speak the truth.
1.Elliott's hand is fine now.I understand your concern but it is okay, no permanent damage thankfully. He was not on anything,he was not fucked up.He slept on his arm for the duration of the flight and lost all feeling. It was totally genuine and terribly upsetting for elliott, I reckon you guys can understand that knowing how important a functioning hand is to a guitar player !!!He didn't want to let anybody down by not playing. In hindsight maybe he should have to stop all the rumours and speculations, however ,there would still be whispers as to why he didn't play.I guess it was a no win situation for him.He had made the trip and had obviously not forseen his limb going numb for several hours, who would have?Instead of speculating about his performance can you perhaps consider how courageous it was of Elliott to go onstage knowing he would have difficulty playing. He is a very honest person, that's why you all care for him so much and he didn't want to let anyone down as you all mean so much to him.I think you should consider what has just been written as it is the truth.

2.Elliott is delighted to have a manager as decent as Scott.Scott is in no way "mis-managing "him. They both have the utmost respect for one another .Scott is a fantastic manager and tremendously well respected within the music industry. He knows how Elliott works and let's him get on with it without interfering.A manger does not have to check in on his artist everyday, that's just bothersome and pointless unless there really is something to talk about that's important. He is available to Elliott 24/7.
2b.As for somebody commenting that Scott wasn't at any of the December shows, why should he have been? When touring an artist will normally have a tour manager, so why should the manager be there ......to waste money?? If Elliott had felt it necessary for Scott to be present then he would have been there, it's that simple !!

3.Elliott is still working on the album, is that not allowed?I do understand that you all want to have a copy and that it has been taking longer than "usual" but please be patient, it is definitely worth the wait.He knows you all want it to have been released 6 months ago but I know you don't want to put him under pressure to release just any old album.....yeah,I know even that may seem great right now but not really,eh?
Thank you all for your support, it really is appreciated. You all seem really nice and I've met a good few thousand of you !! Elliott is really lucky to have people like you to appreciate his music and stand by him(he's worth it).Don't worry, he's in several pairs of loving and capable hands.
Much love to you all

From August 2002. Is that right? I have those same posts somewhere. I wish I had the ones from when hhelliott first posted and was so funny and witty. Suggesting books for someone to read on the flight over here from England. That Elliott I would like to remember and those posts are the only time he showed to fans here.

Does anyone have those saved somehow? It would be really nice to read those. I missed 'em and never bothered to look them up, then they were lost. I thought there would eventually be more :(

hey I realise that. it makes me fucking sad too because the elliott here is a fighter and defensive sure, but with confidence in where he's going and what he's doing, and now they have a different spin on them, but please I don't expect people to get thrills out of them or kicks.....oh contrare...

well we got to realise that elliott wore boxers and not briefs in those posts, every fans dream....:)

I can remember a lot of what he said but didn't save them, a board crash of sorts meant they are lost...., and that elliott paints a nice image of him, because (and I know I make him sound like a puppy here) he was very playful and kinda having fun with the spirit of things y'know....

I think you guys are taking what I said out of context. I only meant that the fact that he took the time to write to you guys was sweet. I missed it the first time it was posted, so I was greatful to be able to see it.

I never dreamed it was going to be construed that way. I'm sorry, it wasn't meant that way at all.

I thought of that as a glimpse into the "real" Elliott. Everyone who knows him personally talks about his incredible sense of humor and playfulness. It was such a different side of him for those of us who saw the public Elliott to experience. I think that's why so many here didn't believe it "sounded like Elliott" and was fake.
I still remember the smiley he used and him saying not to be scared of it

You know, I went back and read everything over very carefully...

And I want to say I'm sorry. I think I used a very bad choice of words. It *IS* so very sad at points, but very sweet too. I only meant it in the best way possible. I promise. I love him as much as anyone here. Sorry if I offended anyone. It wasn't meant that way. Only in the best manner possible.

Anjy its ok. I think that many of us understood what you meant. Things are so messed up right now for all of us that some of us (talking about me and I imagine others) feel skinless and raw. It is touching to see this other Elliott and we're lucky that he shared some of that with us.

Sorry Anyj, I didn't mean to imply you were getting kicks out of it, please don't apologise, I know exactly what you're saying, the posts are great to read. Sorry that my post above came out sounding harsh...

When I said they made me sad, it wasn't because of what he had written above - but more for the fact that he'll never write here, or anywhere else for that matter, ever again. That just depresses the fuck out of me. It hit me, reading those... and so I'm sad.

I just wish so much this hadn't happened. But thanks for posting those, 'cause I've never seen them before.

the weirdest thing is that right after i heard he died, one of the first things that came to mind was how many people on this board were so quick to defend him whenever anyone said the word "addiction." how many newbies were shunned whenever they brought the topic up. i remember someone saying that maybe he's just "different now," like the way brian wilson has become.

i really don't mean that in a negative way towards anyone. it was just what sprang to my mind when he passed.

//how many people on this board were so quick to defend him whenever anyone said the word "addiction."//

I can totally relate to that though. We, as humans, tend to try and ferociously protect the people we love. That was natural.

I've belonged to a bbs for 5 years now for Mike Doughty (former singer for Soul Coughing, superspecialrock.com) and we did the very same thing when he was going through all of his addiction problems.

Amy, I don't want to sound rude or anything - and I certainly don't want anybody to feel offended - but, according to my own calculations, he certainly wouldn't have gone beyond 18500 posts to this day.

I'm thinking of this part in particular:

"...i kiss goodbye the howling beast on the borderline that seperated you from me...(not my lyric, dammit.)"

And also the reference to people "running around with arrows in their hats".

Maggie's Farm is, of course, Mr. Bob Dylan.

the howling beast lyric is dylan and the song idiot wind from blood on the tracks. (

h)helliott name was never explained, but 'elliott' and most of the names of that ilk were taken, and the blether which someone was posting under that alias on behalf of him a couple of times (though he posted under it too eventually) I always thought was a variant on blather....to talk endlessly or non sensically, I think there might have been another interpretation, but the haze of my brain forgets...:)

the arrow hats thing I think was elliotts way of talking, in reference to the fact that a lot of people were speaking ill rumours at the time......

ktothebbc

Reading his words here on the board is almost more upsetting to me than reading his lyrics, because it's probably the closest most of us will come to having had an actual conversation with him, knowing how he spoke, what his personality was like...

Plus, I've been thinking about how he quoted the song Idiot Wind. It's such a fantastic song and it's easy to see why Elliott liked it. It seems to have a lot to do with the circumstances that caused him to post in the first place: people with arrows in their hats running around talking about him and his state of mind and body. If you keep that in mind, what he was going through at the time (I can't actually imagine) and then read the lyrics to Idiot Wind... well, damn, it's heavy stuff.

"Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess."

Check em out in entirety: http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/idiot.html

Here's the verse he particularly quoted, speaks to the experiences he must have been trying to get through at the time:

"I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free,
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me.
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry."

Elliott, dammit, I miss the hell out of you. :(

Sorry for the long post everyone, I'm just in a weird mood and this was on my mind. Had a rough day and I'm rambling. Thanks for reading.

XO,
Kev

I remember the visit; and the earlier one which was as close as some of us will ever have gotten to see the Elliott that friends describe as very funny.

These posts here were written at a particular point. Maggie's farm was about his old agent- who he had just terminated with and who was involved with Dreamworks.

And the arrows were because there was a lot of conflict among board members here and he was commenting on the conflict among us- which was about whether it was ok to wonder about his drug use or keep quiet about it since he had denied it.

The blether- and Charlie would know- appeared to be his girlfriend of the time who was from Scotland and somehow that seemed to some of us a word she might use- or his sister or both.

And hheliott- someone at the time explained that the (h) meant something that made sense but I don't remember,

Blether is a Scots word. It means a talking, especially gossiping, (stoping for a blether, having a blether) or someone who talks insesantly.
If he ever read Alasdair Gray, the word shows up quite a bit in his books as I remember.

I don't know how you found those posts from Elliott- it's so wonderful to see them again- few as they are. I thought they were permanently gone.

I remember that he wrote a couple of nights between the last shows he played in the Northwest. People were so convinced it wasn't Elliott because hhelliott didn't talk the way Elliott did. His playfulness and humor wasn't something that we got to observe that much.

So thanks again.

BUT.....the reason I never stepped into the arena, is that a GLADIATOR like YOURSELF doesn't need anyone stepping in and swinging their sword around manically. I was aware that it's almost an insult to you to attempt to defend you in this manner. It's like Dolph Lundren walking onto a Steven Seagal movie set, Steven would just look at him blankly and with bemusement, and explain in orderly fashion he can kill 1000+ terrorists all on his own, and make (usually chef related) quips in the meantime....., get out Dolph! :-D

funny, i read those posts of (h)helliott's last year when someone linked them up, and for some reason, i thought by the 'lots of arrows in hats' reference, that elliott just noticed many people using a smiley of a cowbow wearing a ten gallon hat with an arrow through it. now i'm not sure why i thought that, i don't see a cowboy smiley...weird where the hell i came up with that idea.

hmm...smilies with hats

:wizard: :santa:  :pimp: :tacos: :hat:
and technically:
:deboned:

why did i think there was a cowboy one? i'm bonkers. well anyway, his way of describing the mudslinging or whatever is clever. i guess that went over my head but i thought it was cute when i believed he was just talking about a (nonexistent)cowboy smiley.

I know that everyone thought it was a hoax. Just as people here wouldn't have believed hhelliott if Charlie and Woody weren't so convinced. I don't think Elliott did or he wouldn't have dug it out of oblivion to respond to it. Sam is brilliant and if he wanted to send a message to Elliott, couldn't reach him in any other way and didn't want anyone but Elliott to know it was truly him- that's exactly what he would have written. This was on the board at a time when many people - or at least many outsiders- didn't know about Elliott's drug use and didn't know he wasn't talking to old friends. One of the reason's people were convinced it wasn't Sam was because they didn't believe he'd need to resort to a board to send Elliott a message. But at that time, that was the only way. It was also posted when a musician had just died.

that wasn't sam, the record advertisement at the end was too ridiculous, and sam had more tact than that. also, he seemed to kind of mind his own business about elliott for the most part after 2000. we can't assume everyone who claims to be a well known musician is actually who they say they are just cos in one instance a poster claiming to be elliott was actually elliott. there have been many imposters and trolls here over the years. the shocking part was that this one was for real.

i understand i'm replying to a post that's 7 months old ;)

What's interesting about the "sam hoax" is that after a certain point the message was no longer accessible via search. It disappeared into the system. And then Elliott dug it out of oblivion and responded to it. He must have seen it on the board when it was posted because he went to great lengths to retrieve it several months later.

I think it was Sam exactly because he had too much tact to put that record ad at the end.

THIS IS MESSY AND OUT OF ORDER BUT HERE MOST OF THEM ARE. THE STUFF IN QUOTES WAS WRITTEN BY OTHER POSTERS AND ES RESPONDED:

"i dont think elliott is the webmaster of dreamworks these days :P"

...i ain't gonna work on maggie's farm no more...maybe charlie's farm...i've already planned to put at least a song up...maybe more than one...SOMEBODY ALREADY HAS, RIGHT?...now who might that be? THIS MESSAGE COURTESY OF THE BLETHER, but written by (h)hhelliott.

...i kiss goodbye the howling beast on the borderline that seperated you from me...(not my lyric, dammit.)

love to you all, even YOU and YERS,
elliott

"i dunno its sad really. i have this sick feeling that we will not see the new album, in legal form. (not gonna start a bootlegging argument) But i hope we do. even if its the last one, i hope its a blaze of glory (i mean retiring not anything else)"

(wished I had for awhile.) THIS MESSAGE APPEARS COURTESY OF THE BLETHER, but is from (h)hhelliott (i am not the blether, but i know...them.) sure seems like a lot of people on this thread running around with arrows in their hats. love to you all, m'friends. peace, (h)hhelliott (elliott)

...I ain't gonna work on maggie's farm no more...

i'm not a hero and you shouldn't be hated, but yes, e. you're completely wrong. sometimes i get TIRED.

NOT FROM THE BLETHER, but courtesy of...them, from (h)hhelliott (elliott)

ParentheticalThought

Elliott's screen name was (h)helliott (see my third post above). We think the Blether was his girlfriend at the time, Valerie, tho some people think it could have been his sister Ashley. Whoever it was signed on as a guest under Elliott's screen name.

Sorry this stuff is such a mess. I've been having trouble posting so I got it on there as quick as I could before my computer ate it and I had to start again. I don't know why that emoticon is in my first post. I didn't put it there and can't get rid of it.

He really did respond to it. On the flaming lips hellfire back when Elliott's manager was their manager. I think I copied it and maybe I can find it. It was strange because I had tried to recheck for the "sam" post and it had completely disappeared until the response.
The original "sam" one was written at a time when Elliott was badly into drugs - even though we didn't know it- and also Elliott was not responding to phone calls or contact attempts from old friends. People thought it was a hoax not just because of the ad which I think was a way to sidetrack people but also because they figured that Sam would be able to get hold of Elliott. But he couldn't.
What's sad is that I don't think Elliott got a chance to reconnect with Sam before he died. So if that was Sam and Elliott then that was there last interaction.
And the last Elliott played with Sam was in Dec 2000 I think.

Blether. Could be wordplay on 'blather' and the 'ether.' The old catchphrase 'messages coming through the ether' from radio times, back when they thought there was an actual 'ether' that things had to be transmitted through. But the expression survived....

I'm thinking blether is Elliottese for the barely to be trusted medium of the internet...Blamonet may have furthered this.

I could easily be wrong about this but I seem to remember that his gf at the time was Irish or Scottish & "blether" is some expression used by Irish or Scottish folk. So the idea is that the 'Blether' posting on Elliott's behalf was his Gf---Valerie?

Yes. And then Elliott posted under that name. It was Valerie but I think it was Valerie and Ashley who wrote those initial posts.

As for the ((h)helliott, that's more complicated. It was a pun of some kind. Someone who is better with smilies may be able to translate it. (h) means something. But where does (h)hhelliott come from?

As for the Sam stuff, isn't it discussed somewhere in here?

I sent a PM a little while ago asking that very thing. Hopefully it'll happen.

It was Elliott. Charlie confirmed it. That tranquilizer was responsible for some of his memory problems with songs that left him sounding out of it at some shows. I also mentioned in another thread emailing him that night and it was clear from his response that it was Elliott. Although I never doubted it was him to begin with.

i can absolutely understand the trouble with the clonopin..
i was unconscious half the time while on it and withdrawls were terrible..
plus when you are depressed you often take more than you should.. i did this with xanax as well.. with the same kind of effects.. numb self-destructiveness and foggy memory/thinking.. man..

at least he came to the board and that makes you think he musta read probably times when he didn't post.. i know he sounds a little edgy in some of the comments, i think it's only natural that sensitive people develop that kind of edge to keep others' hurtful offhand comments from getting to them.. i've got the same sharp edges even though i'm a friendly ghost so i get that..

you emailed him? i woulda been too chicken!!

Those first posts were funny and he was in a good mood in spite of his insomnia. One was the don't be afraid of my long hair thread. I can't remember the other one from the same night. He was quick and witty. People didn't believe it was Elliott (I think because he was so playful.) Such a contrast to the reports from his performance the following day.

He definitely did read the board at times when he didn't post.

After repairing my right-side (deck/transport) power supply, it then was dropped, and the plastic "rails" or slotted holders for the 4 heat sink edges broke apart, well really fractured.
Does anyone know what kind of plastic that is, or know where replacement ones could be found? Any info would be great...I'm toward the beginning of a long trip into techland (which I like).

I don't not believe it was him because of what was said, it's just he said he never even read his own reviews for example, so why would he go chat online with his fans and post about his hair? i guess we'll never know for sure

We do know for sure. It was definitely Elliott. We know that for several reasons. One reason is that Charlie said it was Elliott and Charlie had been in email contact with Elliott and Valerie and then Jennifer. He wasn't "talking about his hair"- he was kidding around.

The night he started those 2 threads was after his San Francisco performance in 2001. He couldn't sleep and came on late at night and had fun with people.

Elliott made other posts such as commenting on the arrows in people's hats.

Most people faking Elliott would have acted very differently. One of the reasons so few people believed it was Elliott at the time was that he was funny and clever and didn't act depressed at all. A fake would have acted more like the Elliott in that girl's fake story about meeting Elliott.

(Also the blether was Valerie and Elliott's sister plus Elliott used that as well.)

i personally think that the "scared of my posts" thread might just the greatest thread in the history of sweet addy ... :D

i love it that we share some of the same writing quirks ... now i can only aspire to be nearly as witty ... his rant about the blue grouch still makes me giggle, and ive read it a million times.

makes me kick myself for not hunting down sweet addy sooner than i did ... and the arguments over whether or not it was him are just priceless .... can't you just see him slumped in front of the computer in the middle of the night (like weve all done before), reading the arguments for why he wasn't, well, him and getting a great chuckle out of it. i just love it, every word of it, i've heard there were other threads that the wayback didn't catch ... i'd loveeeeee to find copies of them floating around someday.

i'm really missing Elliott today.
Listening to songs like Waltz #2 "I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow". So true.

Listening to Heatmiser songs too, You Gotta Move "Your just below Dallas town..." i keep thinking about his life and him growing up and stuff.
I can only read about him in the books i have on him, and how i will never know or meet him, but i'm gonna love him anyhow.

It kills me that i'll never meet or see him, all i have i have is his music. his wonderful, wonderful music.
And even his music is making me more depressed because i am thinking of all this.

i just had to get those words out of me to people who understand.

"perfection is not my ideal. it's an insult to the gods."

I like Elliott Smith.

This is a recurring theme of Elliot's, isn't it. He also said, between songs at a show, (sunset junction? I should verify this) "Fucking up is part of it man" I think he wanted humans to be compassionate about ourselves when it comes to imperfection and failure.

I just discovered this thread and find it both eery and comforting- "The Apocryphal Postings of Elliott Smith". And I love how Woody never doubted it was him. Woody, you're the hero of this story for never doubting.

I also love flipsgurl for posting "why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near" and how great was his response to finish the lyric? I like to think he could take in the love that people, even strangers feel for him. He appears on the board and all the shy forest creatures want to say hello like he's Snow White on a walk through the woods.

Just joined the forum and am loving it. So much to explore.
