Evan Miller // Twelve Canons - Split Cassette (Night People, 2007)
http://www.mediafire.com/?yyminwnimzt
On Evan Miller's second release for Night People, he brings out some intimate low key stunners that don't lack on the details and bring out just as much contemplation in the listener while feeling just a little sad in their tune. Iowa City's long time dark folk ramblers Twelve Canons change things up a bit by moving into some lighter territory, referencing the same kind of slightly sad, ecstatic, but light and airy tunes Evan creats on this release. Perfect late night summer time jams.
Side A, Evan Miller:
1. What the Flower Gives the Bee
2. The Moon Last Sunday
3. Gift of Tongues
Side B, Twelve Canons:
1. In Vein
2. I Try To Do What's Right
3. Better Days

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mfjj2mju2jh
"Wet Hair is the new solo outing of Raccoo-oo-oon member Shawn Reed. Cult vibe organ drone, slowed down tape hiss percussion warble, and chanted vocal bathed in echo, provide the basics for Irifi, a lone march across a desert, these are droney reverberations tinted with pop influence cloaked in the dark , music for vampires. Recorded by Ryan Garbes for maximal blow out. Expect more from this quickly evolving project soon. Artwork by SDReed." -Night People

Nirvana - In Utero (Steve Albini Mix)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WMLE5EFW
found this link so not sure of the bitrate...
Apparently, Universal UK reissued this in 2003 for their Universal Vinyl Series. They mistakenly used the masters from Steve Albini's original mixes, the ones so highly contested by Geffen that resulted in the hiring of R.E.M. producer Scott Litt to remix "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies." As a result, the reissue was quickly pulled and this record became an instant rarity.
As for the Steve Albini mix: there are significant differences on the two tracks mentioned above. The most notable difference on "Heart-Shaped Box" is the effect on the guitar solo, a sort of echo-phase effect that is borderline nauseating, but shreds nonetheless. "All Apologies" features Kera Schaley's cello more prominently in the mix, contributing a chaos to the coda of the track not present on the Scott Litt mix. There also appears to be a second added guitar track during the verses. Both tracks minimize the effect of double-tracking on Cobain's vocals apparent on the more familiar Scott Litt mixes (in fact, I can only detect one vocal track on both songs).
On the rest of the album, Krist Novoselic's bass is noticeably up in the mix, while Kurt Cobain's vocals and David Grohl's drums seem to be mixed lower. Since I've long grown accustomed to the album as it was originally issued, this mix is slightly less satisfying. I prefer the trebly, grating production on the guitar and the booming thunder of David Grohl's bass and tom-tom drums on the original issued version. The original Steve Albini mix, though, is still pretty massive sounding. And, thanks to Novoselic's bass being more audible, his playing is given renewed vigor, especially on "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle." For any die-hard Nirvana fan, this is worth seeking out and possibly shelling out lots of money for.

Vibes - You God It CS (Not Not Fun, 2009)
http://www.mediafire.com/?d3jnytmzoqd
It’s not every day friends get together and decide to swim upstream, but sometimes a great notion deserves great emotion – and legitimate forward motion. Then: shit happens. And then later: Vibes. LA’s most recent sub-underground non-rock quartet are a confusing composite electric dream of DIY funk, stream-of-consciousness garage soul, and groping group groove. Their live shows to date have functioned like moveable parties; the audience is either just crashin’ the thing or looking for someone they know. Regardless, You God It is the band’s first recorded statement, a six song EP featuring the bulk of their live staples, from the dizzy jangle-anthem “Honeycomb” to the slinky pow-wow dance “Spirit Soul” through to the swaggering woodblocks ballad “Shake It Off.” Love is all around, take a look. Tracked live at Bored Fortress then mixed by Ged Gengras with boss organ overdubs by Cameron Stallones, Pro-dubbed tapes in hand-numbered J-cards with full-color collage art by Amanda. Edition of 100.

Bark Cat Bark - Á Lífi (2009)
http://rapidshare.com/files/197583331/Bark_Cat_Bark_-_A_Lifi.zip
(not my link)
Bark Cat Bark is the instrumental music project of multi-instrumentalist Josh Todd (born 18 April 1990). His music is recognized by its use of a large variety of instruments in relatively minimalist compositions, often with a touch of either European classical music or French folk music, using primarily the violin, piano and accordion with stranger instruments such as the gayageum, xaphoon and kuhlohorn. He has been compared to musicians such as Yann Tiersen, Zach Condon, and Owen Pallett.

"Spit It Twig! (Volume 1…) was conceived as a literal version of my Contempt! album. I thought it would be fun to take the initial concept of making a sample-based album [a la Wu-Tang Clan] combined with my own style of vocalizing to its most obvious conclusion: a mix-tape of original lyrics over Wu-Tang [and similarly-inspired] beats. In this way, it should play as a skeletal blueprint of the actual album. The idea of contributing my own take on mix-tape culture at large in this instance was a great fit, since it shares an exuberance for re-appropriation that I hoped to achieve with Contempt!"

Owl Xounds - Teenagers From Mars (Colour Sounds, 2007)
http://www.mediafire.com/?iiltnqdzdzt
"Boggin', bowing, fucking around. That´s the deal with Owl Xounds.
This project of Adam Kriney has had many forms and formations. This one consists of the core Adam Kriney (drums) and Gene Janas ( upright bass) with Mario Rechtern (saxophone), who has been involved with free-music since the late 60's, and has played alongside with people like Sunny Murray or Linda Sharrock. Together they´ve made one of most essential record of fire music I’ve heard in the past times.
Based in Brooklyn, this trio, informed by the late 60s and early 70s free jazz of pioneers like Albert Ayler, Alan Silva, Noah Howard, or Sunny Murray, builds a giant maelstrom of sonic energy, showing that this kind of jazz still is not only actual but also urgent to discover.
The interaction between the players is great; They give and find space, slowdown and then accelerate into a killer meltdown of noisy bliss that certainty will not be strange to people connected with the most ferocious fire music and/or noise.
Highly recommended really."

Owl Xounds - Toxic Raga (Colour Sounds, 2006)
http://www.mediafire.com/?dyhlwgny3jy
Another monster in the wake of this group's levelling Cow On Mushrooms, Toxic Raga once again pairs bass clarinettist/throat singer Arrington De Dionyso with drummer Adam Kriney and bassist Gene Janas. "The textures/times/vibrations embarked upon in this free-music setting draw from the sewers of outsider-experimental jazz explorations and intuitive approaches to instant composition received from the cosmos above. Kriney's clustered/blistering drumming assumes the role of pace and power, while Janas' extraordinary upright bass innovations/antics allows the density to fluctuate from a single buzzing bee to a blizzard's roar, and De Dionyso's bass clarinet/vocal statements and allusions/illusions breathe the final beautiful hush of towering xounds on which to meditate. As psychedelic as a manhole cover and as gentle as a toothpick, the trio dance the magic waddle of forgotten mystery, and sing songs of lost future legends and reach inward plucking their pumping red heart from the cold dead hands of this fucked EARTH." - CSR. Numbered edition of 108 copies in oversized envelope art.

You’re not going to find a whole lot of progressive jazz riffs, piercing harmonics, spastic time signatures or anything else that made Pajo a Louisville legend, but there is a great way to enjoy this album: build a camp fire deep within your local wilderness destination, crack open a few cold ones and indulge in one of the most epic sing-a-longs courtesy of Pajo, and of course, Dr. Glenn Danzig.

Town & Country - It All Has To Do With It
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y274/marlonavich/TownCountry.jpg
Really beautiful instrumental album on the Thrill Jockey label. Bowed stringed instruments, guitar, chimes, piano, squeezebox and others playing gentle (but not spineless), sweetly hypnotic music. The pieces on this album are all very satisfying. Partly because they are all long enough to reward you with inner mutations both subtle and drastic. The songs seem to rely more on harmonic shifts and gradual variations in repetetive themes than on chord progression or obvious melody. The instruments just work well together and the result is really good mood music.
4 tracks. 192kbps. awesome.

Graveyards: "CAN I TAKE MEDICATONS IF I'M STRAIGHT EDGE? / TALES FROM THE UNHEALER" (AUDIOBOT, 2007)
http://www.mediafire.com/?g1ztumbyw1t
"This is a two-track (obviously) CD-R culled from a couple of live performances, and has to be the absolute peak of the trio's obsession with slow-paced, vacant, tense, silence-driven sparring sessions to date. At least the first eight minutes of "Can I Take Medications If I Am Straight Edge?" are dedicated to near-nothingless, with Buetow's shrill bowing and Hall's cymbal shaving only occasionally cutting through the hiss of the recording device. Slowly but surely the gears start moving and all three move in step for brief glimmers, relaxing back into their chairs as soon as you think something's about to erupt. They played with this trick a few times when I saw them before giving in to the urge and playing it balls-to-the-wall fire music rampage style, but the payoff never really comes here. Instead they stick to quick sprints throughout the near 25-minutes, weaving tension and release in and out of the other too quickly to ever really feel one emotion over the other. "Tales from the Unhealer" is a sludgier sound and the trio sound more on edge, opting for louder, more rambunctious moves than the previous session allowed. In fact, they spend a good bunch of the minutes here firing on all cyllinders, with only brief pauses to regroup before charging headfirst once again. It's actually two pieces in one, as applause breaks the set up halfway through the 20-minute track and they have another go, with Olson spewing ear-splitting sax noise to Buetow's groans, only to be joined by Hall in a final send-off which sees the three approaching the ecstatic, brash, Last Exit vernacular they sometimes so conscienciously avoid. The impact would've been all the more greater if the quality was better, but what're you gonna do."

The Olde World - It's Hard To Remember

What's left of the song's my other half Nicole and I have made after my old laptop crashed. The album's title "It's Hard To Remember" is very befitting seeing as I can only remember four of the track names. I'm not classically trained on any instrument but I do have a deep soul and a lot of passion so I guarantee a listen is not a total waste of time.

Terror Bird: "SOCIOPATHS ARE GLAM c36" (Night People, 2009)
http://www.mediafire.com/?gmlma2j3jng
"Terror Bird is Nikki Never from Vancouver's Modern Creatures solo outlet. One of the finest recordings released in any format on Night-People, Terror Bird is honest, heartfelt, nostalgic pop music, layered in touches of dark ambiance and glittery sheen. Centered around Nikki's amazing voice and dirgey piano arrangements, Sociopaths are Glam references classic 80's and 90's dark pop without any historic worshiping or posturing. Couldn't be more excited to just sit around and listen to this amazing album. Artwork by SDReed. "

Current 93 - Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain
http://www.mediafire.com/?yngttinmozt
Spinning around epic series of verses written by Current 93 founder David Tibet, the new album sees Tibet back with a new 1972-style supergroup comprised of himself on vocals and July and Gorgon guitars; guitar hero James Blackshaw on 12-string guitar and piano; counter-culture guru William Breeze on electric viola and viola-controlled sampler; Cyclobe and Coil's Ossian Brown on synthesizers, treated organ, and electronics; heavenly musician John Contreras on cello and synthesizers; haunting chanteuse and composer Baby Dee on piano, Hammond organ, and throat song; Pantalemon's enchanted Andria Degens on vocals; world famous porn star Sasha Grey on vocals; Andrew Liles (Nurse With Wound) on electronics and guitars; extraordinary percussionist supreme Alex Neilson (Red Krayola, Trembling Bells, Bonnie "Prince" Billy) on drums and percussion; Grammy award-winning genius Rickie Lee Jones on vocals; Alice and Henry Rousham on vocals; Steven Stapleton on electronics and glands; NYC legend Matt Sweeney (Zwan, Neil Diamond, Superwolf, ZZ Top) on electric guitar and vocals; rock god phenomenon Andrew WK on bass, piano, finger-bells, and vocals; and the beautiful Hush Arbor's Keith Wood on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, and bass.
Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain is the most unique, unpredictable, and powerful release yet from Current 93. Tibet has brought together an amazing and bizarre array of talents and created an album unlike any other.

The Aum Rifle - A Peal Of Bells (Shrimper, 2004)
http://www.mediafire.com/?1djlyhtnzzm
The Aum Rifle's association with Shrimper Records' shouldn't make their simple recording techniques a surprise. Released in 2004, about a decade after Shrimper made itself the benchmark for cassette-only D.I.Y. ethics, the trio of Alex and Cari Ganowsky and John Thill released the 14-song Peal of Bells. The album opens with the lo-fi acoustic "Wilt," a whimsical song that ends with a shattering sound of bottles. Followed by the folksy, banjo-led "Joseph Tyler," the band blends the familiar with the startling in a seamless, refreshing way. Homemade instruments also keep listeners guessing.

Big Star - Keep an Eye on the Sky (boxset)
KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY-arriving September 15-spans 1968 to 1975 and the collection uncovers a trove of unreleased demos, unused mixes, alternate versions of songs, and a 1973 concert recorded in Memphis. The lavish packaging includes extensive liner notes, rare and never-before-seen photos, and insightful essays about the cult of Big Star and the band's history. Spotlighting the band's roots, the box set opens with several songs recorded before Big Star formed, including 'Try Again,' one of the first songs Bell and Chilton wrote together. Big Star inspired a fevered allegiance among fans of power pop, giving rise to a cult of believers who spent decades spreading the gospel. Their enthusiasm turned this obscure Memphis pop band-one that got little airplay, sold few records, and only played a handful of times-into a remarkable rock and roll resurrection story. Big Star's trek from obscure Memphis band to standard bearers for an entire genre of music has never been fully mapped-until now.

I'm quite puzzled as to the name of the artist..it's in Chinese yet the songs are unmistakably in English :therock: I might have gotten this mislabled or something, (also, the characters won't show when I try to zip it, so I replaced them with parenthesis' instead). If anyone wants the song names, I can put them up.
It's still amazing though. It reminds me of multiple post-rock influences mixed with a hint of Mt. Zion.

The point at which Jon Spencer truly crafted his own identity was with his Blues Explosion band. As the name suggests, their music was frequently loud, bombastic and loose limbed, as well as having the sense of adventure to strip to the bone and put themselves back together again, most notably with their Acme Plus remix album.

William Elliott Whitmore - Hymns for the Hopeless (2003)
William Elliott Whitmore has the ancient sounding voice of an 80-year-old Appalachian moonshiner, and while he is yet to turn thirty, his bleak and death-haunted tales are full of the kind of regrets that only a long life full of loss and struggle can validate. On Hymns for the Hopeless, his debut release, Whitmore mines a strip of narrow Americana that conjures Dock Boggs more than it does Ralph Stanley, and if this isn't exactly the blues, well, it sure isn't bluegrass, either. Actually, the simple, stark three-note melodies of Whitmore's dirges sound more like church hymns than anything else, and his ragged crow-croak of a voice (which makes Tom Waits sound glib and Leonard Cohen sound like a pop diva) comes from a place where the blues and gospel first converged into country. From the first track, the unaccompanied "Cold and Dead," Whitmore begins an unrelenting search for redemption and reaches out for death as the only true reckoning of a man's life, and if he seems to share little of a street preacher's faith in a paradise beyond that reckoning, he seems to reach out for it anyway, and by the album's closer, the full-tilt gospel romp of "Our Paths Will Cross Again," he seems to suggest that yes, there's hope, even for the hopeless. This is timeless stuff, delivered in stark arrangements of just banjo or guitar, with occasional touches of junkyard percussion, and throughout there is Whitmore's harrowing, convincing voice that sounds like it has crossed the River Styx and returned to preach to the living. If there is a problem with this striking album, it is in a lack of variety, as each song unwinds at the same slow pace, and occasionally Whitmore simply tries too hard and loses believability, as he does with "From the Cell Door to the Gallows," which, although striking, suffers from an obvious case of jailhouse noir, and it is the lone track where Whitmore fails to completely inhabit his voice. In the end, this is an amazing debut, a country album that is as far from today's hat acts as a hat can get, an album of rare artistic courage, one that faces death, embraces it, and comes out the other end in a gospel hoedown. Hymns for the Hopeless is a brilliant beginning for William Elliott Whitmore. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fcfrxq8aldhe)

Silent City is one of those disks that cannot pass unnoticed, for the quality of musical thought and care poured into its unique sound. The twelve tracks provide an evocative atmosphere where the voice of Will Oldham is often primary and indispensable, with its dense beauty and depth of expression. Behind him move the muted colors of a battery of pianos that create tension, a large number of additional instruments (including some brass accents), and some samples taken from the American folk and gospel traditions (which do not hurt, either).
The patterns are always quiet. Silent City takes place at night, where the listener can quietly observe, carefully, without the haste of the day. The three last successfully end the disk: “Some Glad Day” seems to be an invitation to spiritual recollection, the instrumental “As Old As the Stars” feels like an improvisation inspired by shooting stars, and “To Hear Still More” a short piece borrowed from the world of Brian Eno.
The album finishes in forty elusive minutes: long enough to fall into an indelible, strong groove before we reach the new day, with its noise and its inevitable distractions.
this is rill nice. Thought some of you guys might like it too.

Richard Buckner & Jon Langford - Sir Dark Invader vs The Fanglord (2005)
mp3 256kpbs | 59MB | 30:43 min.
Recorded at Sally Timms' apartment, Chicago late summer 2002 and mixed with Ken Sluiter at Western Sound Lab except track 9 recorded in Brooklyn, NY and mixed by John Marshall Smith.
All instruments Buckner/Langford with John Rice - mandolin and guitar and digital Willy Goulding on some drum kit. -- www.jonlangford.de (http://www.jonlangford.de/burt3.htm)
We’ve waxed lyrical about Richard at some considerable length on this site before now, so suffice to say the man made two of the most important songs albums of the nineties, end of story. Or not. Since then a series of releases have appeared on his new adoptive home, french Fargo, interspersed with sporadic and inspirational live appearances. Here, an unexpected collaboration with ex-Mekon Jon Langford, conducted three years ago in Sally Timms’ apartment in Chicago yields three new compositions from each, and three co-written tunes. From “Rolling of the eyes” a devilled slide riff shows this to be a true and surprising meeting of minds. The duo play most of the instruments themselves, Langford seems to foster Buckners’ willingness to really cut loose, which has been sensed for a few albums now, but seldom so well executed. It’s a breezy half hour nine tune excursion, Buckner’s demented take on appalachian moan applied to some of the most original phrasing we’ve heard never fails to scare me. “Sweet anybody” is a prime example, and regardless of my somewhat ambivalent feelings towards Langford bless him, anything new from Richard is positively obligatory in our book. -- Boomkat (http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=19157)

Miss Ludella Black & The Masonics - From This Witness Stand (2008)
mp3 320kpbs | 73MB | 38:20 min.
With The Masonics, Ludella Black is back, after the legendary projects, which were The Del-Monas and Thee Headcoatees, and eight years after his first solo album She's Out There", went to Spain to Estúdios Perrotti of Jorge Explosion, to record "From This Witness Stand," this whole union ended up producing a wonderful mixture of "Old School Country Rock" with a primitive "60's Garage-Punk-Rock," and is in diversity and simplicity which is based on this record, as examples "From This Witness Stand" very well played, sung and produced, "Hey Johnny Raw" ability to a level drastically different from other tracks, "Take A Heart" with an incredible beat, "This Is Elvis Dog" pure "60's garage-punk" style, being this coverage, power and simplicity that makes me love this record.

The Ettes - Do You Want Power (2009)
mp3 VBR~256kpbs | 61MB | 34:55 min.
The Ettes' third album, Do You Want Power, marks something of a departure for the band. Produced in Nashville by modern-day garage rock hero Greg Cartwright (most recently of the Reigning Sound), the record is their most focused and diverse set to date and widens their garage rock sound without diluting it. Released in 2008, Look at Life Again Soon was produced by Liam Watson to have a very retro-leaning sound relying on Watson's vintage equipment and Joe Meek-influenced style. Cartwright gives Do You Want Power a modern, in-your-face sound with less reverb and more punch. This serves the flat-out rockers like "I Can't Be True" and "Take It with You" well, giving Coco's guitar extra bite and Poni's drums extra kick. Cartwright also adds some vocals and guitar to the mix, as well as co-writing (with bassist Jem) the best song on the album, the sassy "I'll Be Your Lover (But I Can't Be Your Baby)." To match the clean sound of the album, the band turns in remarkably tight and powerful performances that may sacrifice some noise and bluster but gain back loads of power and toughness in the bargain. It's a change in philosophy that makes for a more mature but no less ferocious record. Another positive difference this time out is Coco's more nuanced vocal approach. When she's angry she spits out the words like they are poison; when she's melancholy there's a quiet power in her voice that she hasn't displayed before. In fact, on the album's ballads the bandmembers show a side they have kept hidden before. They've always had slow, melancholy numbers in their repertoire, but this time out they are less beat group-sounding and instead have a bluesy Laurel Canyon ("While You're Girl's Away") or psychedelic ("Seasons") feel. The song that ends the album, the piano-and-strings ballad "Keep Me in Flowers," could even be a different band if not for Coco's tear-stained vocals. The production shifts and slight changes in philosophy are interesting, but it all comes down to the songs in the end. Tracks like "No Home," the burning hot "Red in Tooth and Claw," and "Blood Red Blood" (to name a few) are first-rate rockers that stand with the best songs cranked out by any modern-day garage punkers, and Do You Want Power is the band's best work to date. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gxfexzwaldae)

Jim White - Drill A Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See (2004)
Jim White writes like a Southern gentlemen. When he released his cryptic debut, Wrong-Eyed Jesus, in 1997, he was approaching 40, and with each record his civil invective and genuine yearning for redemption have become more focused, culminating in an eccentric -- yet fully realized -- body of work that requires no aging to prove itself worthy. Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See preens like an alley cat with a bellyful of chicken scraps. The thick veil of gloss that co-producers Joe Henry and Tucker Martine use to coat each of the 11 hypnotic tracks is entirely transparent, resulting in a glass-bottom boat ride that's both cathartic and uncomfortably voyeuristic. White's characters are always teetering on the edge of a bridge, faces cast skyward, wondering if whatever it is that's left them might swoop down just seconds before the first shoe drops. He meets his subjects on level ground, allowing them to speak through him as well as serve as their master's mouthpiece. On the spooky Tom Waits-style dirge "Borrowed Wings," the ghosts of doomed Bonnie and Clyde-cursed lovers weep "For in the fallow field where what's reaped is what's sown/There lies a road to ruin and it's paved with our tombstones." It's not all hellfire and brimstone, though, as evidenced by the goofy Barenaked Ladies collaboration "Alabama Chrome" and the bright -- almost hopeful -- hidden track, "Land Called Home." There's a deep Southern gothic vibe at work here that brings to mind the Spanish moss meanderings of Daniel Lanois' For the Beauty of Wynona, but it's the shadow of Waits that always gets the last word; "If Jesus Drove a Motor Home" sounds like a cross between something off of The Black Rider and the theme to The Sopranos, but it's interesting that despite all of the celebrity guests (Aimee Mann, Bill Frisell, M. Ward), it's White's self-produced tracks that mirror their creator's sewn up -- but still bleeding a little -- heart. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jnfpxqwaldke)

Jesse Malin – On Your Sleeve (2008)
2008 covers album from the former leader of D-Generation. Recorded over seven days and featuring interpretations of classic singer-songwriters Tom Waits and Neil Young, contemporary greats such as The Hold Steady and The Kills, Punk icons The Ramones and The Clash, Lou Reed and even a Sam Cooke standard - Jesse tips his hat to a small collection of writers that inform his unique musical identity and appeal. As a performing songwriter, Jesse appreciated the challenge of covering unique melodies not of his own design. Jesse Malin's musical career began at twelve years old when he fronted New York hardcore band Heart Attack and spanned eight years with D Generation before culminating in three critically-acclaimed solo albums this decade past. The most recent of these came in the form of 2007's Glitter In The Gutter, which saw Jesse accompanied by a raft of talented performers including long-time companion/sometime producer Ryan Adams, Josh Homme and Bruce Springsteen.

The Watson Twins - Talking To You, Talking To Me (2010)
Following on the critical success of Rabbit Fur Coat, their 2006 collaboration with Jenny Lewis, Southern Manners (2006 self-released EP) and Fire Songs, their 2008 Vanguard Records full-length debut, The Watson Twins return with Talking To You, Talking To Me (February 9th/Vanguard) their most groove-heavy and ambitious album to date. The 12 songs on TTY, TTM, produced by Russell Pollard and J. Soda of Everest, display a new sonic direction previously only hinted at in past efforts. Yes, the folk, country and Americana roots of Leigh and Chandra Watson remain, but the duo also explores and reveals their long-held love of R&B, Bossa Nova, indie pop and most prominently, classic soul. "We wanted your body to move with every song," says Leigh.
Where the gorgeous Fire Songs was slower and more meditative, TTY, TTM showcases the twins' admiration of classic soul vocalists, torch singers and chanteuses such as Etta James and Aretha Franklin. "I think elements of that existed on Fire Songs, but they were buried and just hinted at that," says Chandra. "When you're insecure about something, you don't necessarily have the confidence to invoke those styles."
Those insecurities can be laid to rest with TTY, TTM. The soulfulness of "Midnight" sounds like a heartbroken lover crying the blues at a late night bar. "Harpeth River" updates the vibe of classic Portishead. The Hammond B3 and defiant vocals of "Devil in You" could be a lost b-side to Dusty in Memphis, while "Savin' You" and "Snow Canyons" hearken back to the pair's more traditional Americana-based tracks.
In June 2009, having already written the lyrics for the album separately, the twins, Pollard and Soda decamped to a remote cabin in the High Sierras near Yosemite National Park with no phones, television or music. In four days, armed with only guitars, a drum kit, and computer to record the results, the foursome finished the sketches for TTY, TTM. (The album would later be recorded at Fairfax Recordings on the same mixing console as Pink Floyd's The Wall. It features prominent contributions by members of Everest and My Morning Jacket's Bo Koster.) --- http://www.vanguardrecords.com/bio.asp?idArtist=55

sam is one of the songwriters from iowa cities rock outfit - MIRACLES OF GOD - but here he gives forth 15 songs solo, from a period of time, when he was bedridden and in the hospital after a serious injury. this didnt stop him from writting songs nor singing and screaming into a small boombox recorder. a more reflective and thoughtful batch for acoustic guitar / chord organ / kleenex box. obvious comparison to say : early danny johnston - but more due to the recording techniques, the cut and paste, and use of the chord organ. most songs hit the mark as skewed warbly driges, in his own form. with the rest coming out as strained mid-west gut punk.

The Dry Spells - Too Soon For Flowers [2009]
Too Soon for Flowers is the debut album from the San Francisco by way of Bard College group the Dry Spells, a group that features several members of Citay (Tahlia Harbour, April Hayley, and Adria Otte, who all were a part of the Dry Spells before they teamed up with Citay). Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" is the last track on this album, and that pretty much says it all: the Dry Spells sound kind of like Fleetwood Mac (or more accurately, Stevie Nicks) revisited -- they're witchy, woodsy, folksy, and mysterious. They also sound like twangy, melodica-toting gypsies, especially on tracks like "Too Soon for Flowers" and "Evangeline." When they manage to pull off this eclectic, earthy sound well, they sound strange and darn near breathtaking, especially when it comes to the mountaintop-high harmonies on "Sruti." There are a few places, though ("Black Is the Color," the intro to "Sruti"), where the Dry Spells sound cloyingly new agey, almost as if they were Loreena McKennitt redux; Harbour, Hayley, and Otte's wispy-wild vocal harmonies sound fluffily, frothily esoteric when they're paired with too much "mystical" instrumentation. So that's Too Soon for Flowers' first stumble; the second is the band's cover of "Rhiannon." It's serviceable, it's loyal, and all it does is make you want to put down Too Soon for Flowers and pull out Fleetwood Mac's back catalog. It's the kind of thing that makes this album sound a bit slapdash -- and for a disc that was presumably around six or seven years in the making (the Dry Spells formed in 2002), that's not a good sign. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:dnfoxzt0ldke)

Elizabeth Fraser - Moses EP 12" (2009)
mp3 320kpbs | 28MB
It seems like a long, long time since former Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser made her presence felt as a solo artist, but with this new single it seems all that might be about to change. 'Moses' is something of an enigma - could this be a track from the yet-to-materialise solo album due a couple of years back, or is it an entirely fresh start? The track's soundscape is no less mysterious than its origins, setting swirling, archaic sounding choral samples amid dub rhythms and Eastern European accordion melodies while Fraser's voice sails across the mix in unearthly fashion in a language unbeknownst to this correspondent. Thighpaulsandra offer a sympathetic electronic reworking while Spaceland cast a gloomy, more organic production.

Eels - End Times (2010)
mp3 192kpbs | 56MB | Release date: 19.01.2010
The eighth EELS studio album, END TIMES, is the sound of an artist growing older in uncertain times. An artist who has lost his great love while struggling with his faith in an increasingly hostile world teetering on self-destruction. Largely self-recorded on an old four track tape machine by EELS leader Mark Oliver Everett aka E in his Los Angeles basement, it's a "divorce album" with a modern twist: the artist equates his personal loss with the world he lives in losing its integrity.

“Delicately adventurous. Young Girl leans towards a previously untapped rockist side, while a semi-freaky cover of Margo Guryan’s Love posits Landes as a muted banshee. She’s on plainer ground with Money In The Bank and Dance Area, feathery acoustic songs that shuffle and sway beautifully, though it’s the graceful cadence of Wandering Eye that steals the show.”

The Portland Cello Project (http://www.myspace.com/celloproject) kicks off The Thao & Justin Power Sessions with a cover of a John Tavener song, leading right into a typically Nico-esque vocal cameo by Thao Nguyen (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll). It's a good sign. That they blend the spiritual with the dark and mysterious is fitting, since the cello is one of the few instruments that can evoke the infinite and the heartbreakingly local within the same line. The album is quite the emotional workout, but The Portland Cello Project isn't afraid to rock, nor to mix some distortion into its transcendental brew.
Thao Nguyen and Justin Power (http://www.myspace.com/justinpowersongs) contribute vocals to songs they brought with them to the sessions, with Powers’ tracks (especially “Hungry Liars” and “Cut the Rope”) being among the more up-tempo and edgy. Nguyen breezes through several songs, with “Beat (Health, Life & Fire)” being the most remarkable. There are four other, more stricly cello-driven songs as well, including a cover of Pantera’s “Mouth for War.” Yeah, it works.
The 16 classically trained cellists that form The Portland Cello Project have performed in a variety of settings, including punk clubs. Their generous ear for music of all kinds and the ability to draw the deepest emotion (with humor) from it is helping them create a signature sound and career. The Thao & Justin Power Sessions should serve as an introduction to the ensemble, and it should only further open your own ears. -- Prefixmag (http://www.prefixmag.com/reviews/the-portland-cello-project/the-thao-justin-power-sessions/29175/)

Megafaun - Bury The Square (2007)
From its outset, Megafaun's Bury the Square seems almost -- almost -- to inhabit that lost freak-folk middle ground: an album lacking the genre's abrasive weirdness (see: Devendra Banhart's facepaint, little boy fetish) but retaining its earthy appeal. The first song reassuringly respires with the sort of peacefulness most albums work toward in their final moments, easy "ba ba bas" in a melody suggesting at once sunsets and memories of sunsets, worn, familiar, and brilliantine. And while the album does kind of stay true to these first impressions, imbuing the subgenre with some much-needed sincerity, it also gets really weird, too, dunking the breathy opening of "Where We Belong" into deep pools of dissonant static and infusing "Lazy Suicide" with a Brian Deck phantasmagoria of percussion. But rather than attempts to shake off Califone fans, these forays into extremism feel, for the most part, genuine, which is more than can be said for a lot of their peers (see: Devendra Banhart's facepaint, little boy fetish). Even at six songs, the record feels replete but never overstuffed, and entirely heartfelt. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:d9fqxz9jldte)

Megafaun - Gather, Form & Fly (2009)
When Justin Vernon left Raleigh-by-way-of-Eau-Claire-WI indie folkers DeYarmond Edison to go on to late-'00s indie wunderkind status as Bon Iver, the remaining members of DE, Phil Cook, Brad Cook, and Joe Westerlund, carried on in North Carolina as Megafaun. With an impossible-to-pinpoint, laid back lo-fi sound incorporating Byrds-esque harmonies, elegiac folk-picking, and off-kilter instrumentation (think a rougher-around-the-edges Fleet Foxes), Megafaun earned accolades beyond their feted former bandmate. The trio gained solid enough reviews for the sparse debut disc Bury the Square in 2008; however, their sophomore release the next year, Gather, Form & Fly, on the Home Tapes label, drew raves, with high marks from the Onion AV Club and Pitchfork. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:apfrxz95ldke~T1)
The relentless re-embrace of acoustic campfire ponderings and singalongs may seem a bit strange in the 21st century, but as far as everything progresses, there will always be a harkening back to some form of a mythic lost paradise of the form. That said, Megafaun are just as taken by quietly tortured dark-night-of-the-soul whisperings, lo-fi oddities, and shards of feedback shade as they are of banjos and summertime evenings, giving Gather, Form and Fly a bit of an unsettled edge at various points. Songs like "Kaufman's Ballad" and the slightly goony swirl of "Impressions of the Past," shifting from marches to piano breaks and more, make for more fun than the straightforward if attractive enough compositions like "Worried Mind" and "Solid Ground." At their strongest, as on the brawling, complex "The Process," the trio verges towards the explosive thrill of an act like Akron/Family if not reaching that act's effortless genre recombination. -- AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:0jfpxzt0ldse)

harking back to elder times. this was first released in 1998 (unread #9) as a split cassette with NOVEMBER OF 1959, entitled "moderate hearts beat once per minute" - the KYLE JACOBSON side is now re-mastered (?) - and by remastered i mean about 10 years of crud was scraped from the tapes...it is an unassuming pop masterpiece in its own right. now, combine in large glass : ice, lonesomeness, empty wooden barrels, acoustic guitar strings, a human brain, and some tweeness. and what you get is cold hearts still beating warm precious blood. i dont care if you are the judge or not. i think this man was a geniune genius.

johnson county guitar duos from iowa’s Evan Miller and Phil Ochs. There’s a wonderful melancholy to all these songs, and a great rapport between phil and evan, with just enough fuzz, tremolo, and finger-picking to put a large smile on my face. very refreshing!

I try not to be too self promoting, because I find it really obnoxious when it's overdone, but since I was unable to finish my album last year, I figured I'd share this collections of covers recorded in 2009, some are pretty lo-fi, some are much more thought out. Here's the stupid description I've been using on torrent sites:
A collection of covers recorded in 2009, to serve as a distraction from working on original material, and to test out new recording techniques and equipment. Stripped down and lo-fi, even with several missteps, the reinterpretations of these songs still offer something fresh. Includes selections from mainstream artists like Nirvana, Fiona Apple and Radiohead, to obscure artists such as Ben Trickey and Chauchat.
