My friend and I find this article very interesting because we both work in an independent coffee house. Fuck you starbucks.

Yeah, you live in Hayward, right? It's really funny, because like 10 miles north that's all, like, all there is. (I was in San Lorenzo the other day, and was reminded why I never go south of Oakland/San Francisco).
In all fairness, Starbucks can be fun, though... I like the poetry/picture by little kids they have up... like, there's one about blowing up the moon, and another about how he wishes he was a bird so he could fly away, and several about very depressing/destructive things. I have hope for the youth of America. What independent coffee shop has that? The one I go has a bathroom with a 17 foot ceiling, covered floor to ceiling in graffiti, and no lock (seriously... it would be rad as a random room, but going to the bathroom in there is very uncomfortable). This post is making me rethink my ways.

This is the closest one to me.
Sighhhhhhhhh. I've given up coffee starting Jan 3rd though. I have anxiety over everything and have always been an insomniac so i figured i'de give it a shot. It was kinda hard, but I noticed huge differences in my sleep and anxiety!! James was unaware and gave me a starbucks card a few weeks ago, and i got an espresso and nearly died!
I miss my coffee filled life.

I think the closest independent coffeehouse/bookstore where I live is Red Emma's (http://www.redemmas.org/). I'm not radical enough to buy their books or drink their coffee through.

I miss coffee too. I only drink one or less a day to combat anxiety as well.

I gave up drinking coffee way back in 2002. I was at uni and drinking effing loads...it was pretty much the only drink I was having. I still miss it, and when given the chance, I will sniff coffee granules
I try not to have that much caffeine at all...I don't drink pepsi, coke, dr pepper etc unles having rum  and usually I will have one cup of tea in the morning, then for the rest of the day have water, cordial, some non-caffeine fruit tea.

Sigh, yep, I'm in Hayward. I'm not even anywhere near the town "centre." I'm stuck on top of the goddamn hill by Cal State, where there is NOTHING. grumble, grumble.
Yep, little independent coffee houses rule! I have to get my morning coffee from a chain (better than Starbucks etc) but I would rather get my coffee from an independent shop.

I like Starbucks because they contain the most readily available free toilets in the city. Also, I'm incredibly risk- and change-averse, so I am comforted by knowing exactly what I'm going to get, and discomforted by the notion of trying something/someplace new. Also, the apple fritters are pretty good.
Mind you, I usually get my coffee at the Mexican deli by my subway entrance. It's on my way, the coffee's pretty decent, and a large is only $1.25.
