didn't really listen to weezer that much, but as for rivers cuomo being a guitar god, i can firmly say that he is not.

Yeah, seriously. The dude is average at best.
I do like that ending bit of the "Buddy Holly" solo, though.

 :spit:
Yeah, i don't know who said Rivers can "shred" but they were definitely lying unless they are friends with him and have seen him do it in secret. Michael Angelo Batio he is NOT :D .

Also, i hate it so much when people label people like Jack White as a "guitar god," yet the can only barely play the guitar.
Both men are good at what they do (i guess) but to label them "gods" among guitar players is a little extreme.

The only thing worse than Rivers Cuomo would be "Rivers Cuomo, Guitar God!". That man can't really stand anything else making him any more pathetic/laughable than he already is.

Guitar GOD :

Note: His being a guitar GOD has little to do with his actual playing ability, so much as how hilarious this photo is.

Actually Rivers can shred. He never does anything too unique but he's very technically sound.

Yeah, some tracks on Make Believe maybe, but more so the Maladroit album is when he started "shredding."

I love the production on the Buddy Holly song, where at the very end of the solo it goes from distortion to clean and focused. POp perfection. I've never heard him shred but he is more than competent as a guitar player. However, he has benefited from a very good pop writing sensibility and producers who know how to work it.
He doesn't shred much on Weezer's albums, but he's well into his 80's rock and has been known to bring it out live.

I should hope that most professional guitarists can play a lot more than we hear. Take Bolly for example, in the early days he played loads of crazy solos that he never did later on/now. The mark of a good player is not their exploitation of technical proficieny/"pyrotechnic", it's the ability to divide th ability with the delivery, if that makes sense.
Anyway, I care little for Weezer so really have nothing to say about Rivers et al.

Rivers Cuomo is a million miles away from a guitar god. As Eliot said, it doesn't really matter whether he can shred his guitar or not. In any case, those lazy, hideous Green Album solos pretty much disqualify him immediately, even if you were to then consider the Frampton-esque disasterpiece of "Beverly Hills".
It's like those ponces in Dragonforce, basically. They play fast! Whoop-de-doo. Some of the worst soloing in the history of modern music. I bet those solos are even more of an absolute mess live to boot.
Although there's certainly fast players who can produce brilliant solos that aren't just brilliant for the technique. And there's some who can do solos that just repeat the vocal melody and make them great. Rivers is neither.

ugh, I hate Dragonforce. When did that kind of thing stop being a joke? I've met a few guitarists who dazzle with their tricks and speed, but then they don't even know how to play a basic 12 bar blues.
Remember when Nicky Wire said that the Manics were "bringing back the solo" and he was referring to the one in If You Tolerate This... ? I thought that was amusing. It was about a good a solo as the one in Angels.

I'm guessing most people in this thread are barely familiar with Weezer, especially their better material.
Rivers CAN shred, indeed. You're not going to hear that on the singles, and you don't even hear it much on the records. In some live performances and on some more obscure demos and such, you do hear it.
He's a pretty talented guitarist, but he realizes that doing masturbatory guitarwork all over his songs for Weezer just wouldn't work.
On that note, Weezer's first two albums and almost anything recorded between 1992 and 1998 are God damn amazing. As questionable as some people may find their more recent work to be, nothing they do or don't do will ever take away from that.

I like "In the Garage." The solo. But the whole thing.
Then again, I loathe most "guitar gods" so who am I to judge...

nels cline, amazing experimental/jazz/free jazz guitar player. I think he's known here for his work with Wilco or some other indie band
 Nels Cline. One of my favourites, along with Blixa...

aah, ok. I am familiar with Wilco, but nothing else he's done. He is quite special. I <3 his work on A Ghost is Born. It has a sort of sloppyness to it. very nice. very nice.:yes:
