I was just about to cook some delightful rice. I poured the rice in the skillet and after I turned on the stove bugs started walking out. I almost slit my throat.
I poured water in it and now they're all dead , like i wish i was!

I've heard some hell stories about bugs & food. share yours!

OMG! That's awful. I'm sorry that those terrible little invertibrates ruined your dinner. I don't really have any bugs in food related horror stories. But once or twice a fly has flown into my mouth, which is also awful. Hope you have a bug-free new year.

Just the past Thanksgiving I found some weird little bug in my flour as I was about to make yeast rolls. I just scooped it out and went on cooking because I thought it would be funny and I had high stress cooking to do.

That's all I've got. Once a fly went down the straw of my Sonic Dr. Pepper and I chewed it up thinking it was a piece of ice before realizing the texture was not quite right. When I spit it out all the inner bits were hanging out.

A weevil? My mom finds those in her flour a lot.

I had a lady bug get into my potato salad once, but that's all I can remember. I'm pretty sure I've never intentionally (or intentionally) eaten a bug.

That's gross. Flies, centipedes, and roaches are pretty much the only "insects" i can't stand.

I'm not sure if i've ever knowingly eaten a bug before. When i ride my bike in the summer all kinds of gnats get caught all over my body, so i'm sure a good deal of them fly in my mouth....whatever though.... :\

There are bugs in 90% of the food out there though. There's actually a quota for the amount of bugs a food manufacturer can allow in their products just due to the simple fact that you can't really avoid it. If you're making a huge fucking vat of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and ONE beetle crawls into the pot, you're not going to shut down production for that. So they let a few creepy crawlers get mushed up in there. My view is that as long as i don't know it's there, i can eat it.

I just remembered that I once saw my dad eat a piece of raw kale that had a worm on the underside of the leaf. I still feel guilty for not warning him. :\

When we got salad leaf delivered from a supplier at work we kept finding caterpillars. 3 in one hour was the record.

We buy salad leaf in bags now.

I've eaten flies etc. Not that tasty.

I don't have any flour, but when I do I'm putting it in my fridge. Bugs or mice can't get in there. Hopefully.

eww this thread is gross!
our pantry is attached to the outside so it's really easy for bugs to get in there so we have to put EVERYTHING in tupperware. all of our flour, rice, cream of wheat type stuff is in plastic bags/rubber banded and put in tupperware. ick.

one time we got fish from this fancy grocery store and it had little worms in it so my dad took it back and they gave us so much free steak! it was insane.
edit: also my mom is sooo scared of bugs when she unwrapped the fish she started gagging and running around the kitchen screaming :D

but yeah i don't think i've ever had a bug in my food. other than in our pantry. but we've solved that problem.

I keep my rice, flour, cream of wheat (lol), everything else pantry-related in the refrigerator. I'm an old lady, it seems.

p.s. I've eaten a fly once. I was on a bike.

i was at my aunt's and she ordered Domino's. i had a few bites of a slice before realizing it was crawling with beetles. they said it was just an infestation where they stored their boxes and gave my aunt the money back.

I once made a cup of instant hot chocolate in the morning before school. I was sleepily sipping it when I realized there was a small, solid something in my mouth. I chewed on it without thinking; it had no taste, but this was hot chocolate - not chunky beef stew. So, I spat the something out. It was a small, white larva. Felt totally grossed out, so I poured the rest of the cup into the sink and there were at least 5 more of the little things in there. BLEH. They were all dead and mostly dessicated, thank goodness. I checked another bag from the same box and there were more. At least they got to die surrounded by chocolate and sugar. Sounds good to me.

When I was a wee little boy I got a Buttercrisp burger (like mini White Castle burgers) and thank God in heaven I was going to put ketchup on that bitch because a roach was cooked right into the meet. I'd probably suffer from tremors and anorexia if not for ketchup.

somewhat-related tangent: my cousin recently developed food allergies to basically EVERYTHING, plus he has IBS on top of it. He got a yeast infection in his throat from the food allergies and almost choked to death. Now he refuses to eat or drink anything other than cheese pizza and ensure and won't eat unless his mother's around so he's basically gotten anorexic. it's so weird and i feel bad for him. :(

Aw Laura, that's horrible. :(

Once I drank a Burger King cola and when I was finished I took the lid off to start eating the ice cubes (I eat ice cubes if they are lying around. Even other people's. They are refreshing) and one of the ice cubes had a little spider frozen inside it. D:

And we grow our own potatoes and strawberries and stuff back in England sometimes, so those'll sometimes have bugs on them, you have to sort through them. I guess that doesn't count though.

Our pilots get meals for every flight they make where they have to stay more than like 6 hours.

They're really nice pre-prepared salads, and soups and stuff. Most of the pilots don't eat their "crew meals." Because dude, they make fucking super bank.

So when I see one sitting somewhere, I usually grab it.

Oh man, this one had salad in it. And I'm chowing down. AND A FUCKING HORNET CRAWLS UP OUT OF IT. OH MY FUCKING GOD.

I threw up, and haven't been able to eat out of a crew meal since. :(

My friend met this pilot at a party or something once and he just started working for southwest airlines. He said he got hired for like 15 an hour, and its not until yeeeaaarrrrs later that you start to make bank! I was shocked.

Yeeeears later is usually only like 5-15, according to most of the crew members I meet. And they all make like more than $175,000 a year. It's redonkulous.

Oh, and UPS apparently pays like way better/more than everyone. But you need like 8 years experience.

A few weeks ago, I went to a Chinese restaurant for lunch. I drove around for half an hour, just looking around and finally found what looked to be an okay looking place.

Anyway, there were several customers inside, which is usually a good thing. So the one waitress, in her late 50’s, led me to my table. I sat down, ordered what I wanted and she brought me a coke. Around that time, I noticed that the 2 chairs in front of me were connected by a few cobwebs. I was sitting next to a window and looked at the plants that they had sitting there. All around the plants, over 10-15 ants were moving about. I looked down at the table cover and there were 5 more!

Before the waitress could come back, I left a dollar for the coke & exited as quickly as possible. Later that night, I found that the restaurant had ten 4-5 star reviews on citysearch.com – What the D:

well thats good. They should make loads.

PS I love how almost all pilots look alike. Salt and pepper hair, fit, over 50 etc etc. They're like nyc firemen in that respect.

There was a huge moth in some spinach my mum cooked. It must have flown in during cooking process, innit.
I went to a wedding last year, there was a fairly large, green caterpillar milling about in my lettuce leaves... I must say it put me off the meal muchly. Especially since I was in Wales. :O

i feel like i've posted this before but once i found a screw (a metal screw) in my salad at a restaurant. i sent it back and got another screw-free salad for free.

grossest story i've heard was my former boss finding a fake fingernail in his food. it was one of the kitchen staff's apparently.

My dad bought some dip years ago which was suspiciously hard when we dipped our chips. There was a huge fucking bolt in it! It wasn't a small thing, it was huge, like part of their machinery had just dropped off into the vat, guh. I also once had pasta at this pseudo restaurant which had a big piece of plastic in it, the type that covers a microwave meal. It put me off to say the least! Oh, also I once had a supermarke mozzarella salad thing which came complete with a really thick, black pube on one of the mini mozzarella balls. Gross.
