There was a silly bit of time when I fancied that if I died, No Name # 3 would be played at my funeral. I suppose now I'd rather just live in that song, in some kind of everlasting evening.

and returns at various points

when elliott sings "God knows why my country don't give a fuck...fuck"
if he could just keep on echoing "fuck" i'd be soooo happy.
haha

but really-

Now you wanna show me how (called "now you wanna talk")...the version that sounds like he is really young and its a cheap, soft, warm recording.
it sounds sooo beatiful

i like this thread:
1) chorus for "go by"
2) "dancing on the highway" solo
and most importantly,
3) "waltz #1" (this should seriously be a 20+ min song i think)

The ending of Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands.
Every string section.
The part during Place Pigalle where he goes "Goodnight, sleep well." and the ending.
A Question Mark, everytime the horns come in. I just love it.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, the part where he goes "They were wrong though, they all were." or something like that. I swear, everytime I hear that it sounds like....it sounds like maybe what it'd look like if Jesus really did come back. And the solo sounds like he says "I am God, bow to me."

I always blast Waltz #1, so Amity scares the shit out of me when it comes on.

Anyway, as far as this thread goes, I'd have to say:

All of his instrumental songs
Unlucky Charm: Will you come out now?
In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach): Day breaks, and every morning when he wakes, he thinks of you
Little One: One hit wouldn't hurt a bit
Stupidity Tries: Another drunk conquistador
The harmonica bits in No Name #2
The last minute of Abused

...but that's just off the top of my head.

Also, I would love for A Silver Chain to last forever. If that's not possible, I would at least like a completed studio recording ;)

I've had FABOTH in my car for the last 2 days and just been playing it on repeat and I've probably listened to it straight through at least 4 or 5 times and I've listened to several of the songs probably 3 or 4 times extra as well. I haven't listened to it in awhile , and it was my first Elliott album, and I got it in the 8th grade. It's very much like having an old friend over for a weekend.

I love that part also ,but what about the part where he's like "How come you're, not ashamed of what, you aree-reeee-reee. I'm sorry, that you're the one, sheeee gottttttttt."

I swear that part gives me chills.

Agreed. And in that little stop action guitar work into the break down thing, I brick in my pants. Everytime. Gladly.

ALSO: On an extremely alcohol induced side note: The entire song "Almost Over". If I were pitchfork, Ide rate it something like this:
"An absolutely irresitable blend of guitar work and gut wrenching up and down vocals. Of almost untabbable complexity, this song rocked the faces off me and my children I havent even had yet. Rating : 4.8

While I was listening to Almost Over in the car, someone swerved into my lane and we almost got in a nasty head-on. So, my life was almost over for a second there. Yikes.

The first time I heard Almost Over, I thought he said "Black guys always watch the clock" or something. I was like "What the hell?" Then I checked the lyrics, and it's black eyes. Either way, that song still makes me cringe, don't know why :(

Dillon

I had always heard it as "black eyes," but when I looked at it from how others might hear it, I heard "black guys."

I honestly thought it said that too. "Black guys always watch the clock" and I was like WTF? no way. And I was driving. So I couldn't really get any lyrics. And my mind was thinking of all that stuff from the book, "Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing." (yes i know i know, everyone hates it blah blah) but it talk about how Elliott felt guilty about being a white male. And it all bothered me.

But I forgot about that. Until now.

That song isn't my fave anyways.

Obstinate
12-09-2007, 08:29 PM
Oh really? I must read that. I swear, the more I read about Elliott, the more he seems like a best friend type of character. It's like, everything he did (except the whole smoking and drinking thing) is something I've felt, or been through, or really like to do. Like the part in the book where he talks about Patti LaBelle, the way they describe him being like a little kid, it reminds me of myself, like "Man that sounds definitely like something I'd do." Elliott seemed like a really cool guy, and now whenever anyone comes to me with problems, I have to resist the urge to say "You want me to beat them up? I swear I'll do it."

It's this one part of Waltz #2 I'm not sure how many of you are obsessed enough to have heard, but it's one of the overdubs during the "on and on and on" part. Like, if you listen in Karaoke mode on any program, the overdubbed harmony, the way he sings it, it doesn't go up to falsetto, but the way he says it is just full of such dedication, and the way it goes up on the last "on" just kills me inside everytime. I wish that part could go on forever. Listen to it!

I'm sure that had to cause some sort of subconscious mind fuck as well.
