so while we are thinking of 2007 lets give an all time best. The rules are simple.
one LP per artist and no jazz allowed (that would get too hard). I offer mine as of today.

1)Beatles - White LP
2)Prince - Sign O the Times
3)Blur - Parklife
4)Elliott Smith - Either/Or
5)The Smiths - Queen is Dead
6)Joy Division - Closer
7)Led Zep - II
8)Stone Roses - Stone Roses
9)Belle and Sebastian - If your feeling Sinister
10)Wilco - YHF

Weak? No. Less consistent? Perhaps.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Beatles - Abbey Road (or Revolver or The White Album)
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass (minus the jam tracks)
Elliott Smith - Either/Or (or s/t or xo)
Aimee Mann - Bachelor No. 2 (along with the Magnolia soundtrack)
Low - Things We Lost In The Fire (or The Great Destroyer or The Curtain Hits the Cast or Secret Name or just about anything they put out)
Radiohead - OK Computer (or The Bends)
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy (+ Appendix)
Death Cab For Cutie - We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes

I kinda cheated with the "one album per artist rule" but anyway, I don't know if these are the "best ever" albums for me but they are one's that have had a long-term impact on me and I don't see myself ever listening to them and not enjoying them immensely.

I just singled out jazz because that is one another level completely. Kind of Blue, Blue Trane, I mean can you really compare these to say Radiohead? I am not implying that Jazz is better or worse, just that I really don't think Paul McCartney would be able to sit in on say a Thelonious Monk Session and read the charts and have any clue whats going down.

This Mortal Coil - It'll end in tears,................. anybody??

while reading the end of page 1 and preparing to click over to page 2 of this thread, i was thinking about how i only have a few minutes but i could submit quite a list to this thread. unfortunately i just don't have the time to do it right.

the one album that immediately popped into mind (even while reading the beginning of this thread and wondering, at first, if "LP" meant we were gonna be discussing vinyl here or if we were just talking "albums") was built to spill's "perfect from now on" -- did my eyes deceive me, or has that album really gone unmentioned in this thread until now?!? :O

and then i kept reading and had to second jason's vote for the posies' "frosting on the beater" -- hard to explain, but i love that album from start to finish and 10 years after its release i can still find new meanings in those old songs that relate to my life in different ways now than they did then, and i can still find it in new ways, and i can still find it fresh and fun

and then i saw this here post that i quoted and, even though it's been years since i've listened to it (still mourning the years-ago loss of both my vinyl and cd copies... wait, did i have the vinyl or did i just really want that album on vinyl? can't remember... oh well...) i had to agree on this one, too...

so there's my three-cents' worth and i'm off and on my way :-*

It's a matter of personal taste. I'm not into the Beatles or Nick Drake in the same way you are or anyone else here raving about them is.

Blasphemy!!!: I don't really like Nick Drake that much. Not a fan of his voice, which is important to me.

Possible blasphemy: I find the Beatles to be pretty hit and miss. A tiny bit more hit than miss, sure, and their good stuff is really really good, but they have a fair amount of stuff that just doesn't catch my interest, too.

At the same time I respect them for what they did for music and believe they deserve all the praise they get.

I don't regard a lot of "classic" albums to be all they're made out to be. People rave about The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon, but I'd rather listen to Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I liked Syd's songwriting more than any of the later stuff.

Again, it's just personal taste. I've never found an album that I thought was 100% solid from start to finish. Probably not even an album that was 85% solid through and through.

i've tried several times to listen to this album... it isn't terrible... but i just don't hear what is so great about it. i find it pretty boring and never find myself wanting to put it on. i've even gone back to revisit it a few times just because people praise it so much and i'd like to hear it that way because it's so great when you find albums like that... but oh well.

I can try to explain it...Sorry if I get too wordy.
Aesthetics aside (although they are a huge part of what is unique about this album, and I personally love the authenticity of Mangum's voice coupled with the "live" sounding, completely unique production choices of the record) The true beauty of this album for me lies in the absolutely perfect ways Mangum chooses to word universal human experiences and makes them vivid and honest and heartbreaking, like for example, sex:
"Now how I remember you, How I would push my fingers through your mouth to make those muscles move..." and, "...in the dark, we will take off our clothes and there'll be placing fingers thru' the notches in your spine."
-not the obvious ways one would perceive intimacy, but rather sort of intensely observant, completely innocent, like a child. And really, the spirit of this entire album, and what makes it so special, is that view that Mangum was able to have of life that most everyone transitions out of without even being aware of how wondrous every shape of the world was to us at one point. And its also not as if he sets about trying to deliberately spin his imagery this way to consciously try to speak through a different perspective; in my opinion he is simply living in that world, the one that I can't see anymore. That kind of mind should be so precious to us.
Regarding the sound of this album, I admit, years ago I first dismissed it, because it wasn't Elliott Smith, it wasn't intricate guitar plucking, or the heavy textures of Radiohead, with enormous spaces nor tiny garnishments nor traditional hooks or anything I then had a palette for and wanted to hear when I came across it at that time in my life. I even prided myself in my taste at the time, an attitude which continually proves itself to be irrelevant the more experiences I have. You really must thoughtfully consider it from start to finish though, at least once, or there's really no point.
I wouldn't write all of this nonsense trying to convince someone to listen to just a really catchy musical experience. This album to me will always sound like being born, falling in love, and dying. It breaks my heart every time I reach the end, and I most often listen to this album in its entirety. And I'm not saying Mangum manufactured some divine portal into the meaning of existence that is too complex for ignorant men to understand, but it is a portal, for an open mind to see something that exists in honesty, and innocence, and its just there to experience should you want to get back something you might have lost for a while.

When I think of "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea" I think of the introduction to the movie The Big Lebowski (another amazing product of the 90s). Here it is:

Now this here story I'm about to unfold took place in the early '90s - just about the time of our conflict with Sad'm and the I-raqis. I only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? Sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here - the Dude from Los Angeles. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude. The Dude, from Los Angeles.

That record is totally the Dude. Right place, right time, love it so much, it gots ta be a crime.

I fall further in love with the two of you each day.

Billy Nichols is AWESOME! Would You Believe is a great, great record. He's got a few more too. Love Songs is also briliant, in fact the best songs on that are better than anything on WYB (except the title track, yowsa). Check out Billy's song "White Lightning" - and try to hold on to your fuckin' socks!

As for Ronnie Lane...oh... I love that man. He's one of my favorite people in the universe. I had "Anymore for Anymore" a long time ago, but I recently picked up a double cd collection called "Ain't No One Like (Ronnie Lane)". Holy shittake mushrooms. It's gold, from end to end.

Ronnie and Elliott really remind me of one another so much. I wonder if Elliott dug him? I don't know, but I'd have to bet he would have. Sigh... two geniuses, now gone. :\

I actually always wanted to hear Elliott cover "White Lightning". I think if he did it with his Figure 8 era road crew, they could have torn that shit up proper!!!

It's so silly and awesome at the same time. But it also flirts with darkness at the same time. Right up Elliott's alley.

As for Ronnie... Anymore for Anymore, musically, really reminds me of Coming Up Roses at times. It has about 6,000 chord changes and finger picks in it too, which is right up Elliott's alley as well.

Elliott had a lot of alleys I guess, but they were usually good alleys.

OHHh moby G i have not heard you mention him but somehow i think you already know...
mickey newbury's run of 70s albums are some of the most unique sounding albums ive ever heard (not so much on a song by song basis but as a whole... wow... nothing else ive heard compares)
a crazy fusion of american roots music (mostly from the white tradition but blues creeps in sometimes too) and i dunno, i guess psychedelic music??? some exquisite arrangements and his voICE! wow! sounds pretty different song to song but always incredible....
albums have not received the remaster they sorely need but even in their current condition, they are very worth hearing...

ronnie lane , i didnt know him , but i met him a few times , i was around him in the mid 80s fairly frequently , by then he was pretty frail and in a wheel chair , but god i loved him , he was so humerous and real , it was fun hearing him tell some stories and hear him play even in his ms condition, and these were at private parties so it was really special

In no particular order. It is particularly unorganized. Unorderized. Plus, whenever I hear someone say favorite LPs, I go more for the quality of the recordings. I mean, obviously it's got to be good music (to the lister), but...while I may like News Of The World (by Queen) in a more musical sense, I put A Night At The Opera because the recording tricks and methods are fucking amazing. So, with my view on it stated (not that mine is right, just offering more clarity, if you wanted more), here are my favorite however many LPs

Queen - A Night At The Opera
Tiger Army - II: Power of Moonlight
Elliott Smith - Figure 8
Arlo Guthrie - Running Down The Road
Queens Of The Stone Age - R
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
Ween - Chocolate and Cheese
Paul McCartney - McCartney
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Dead Kennedys - Frankenchrist
The Blood Brothers - Burn, Piano Island, Burn
Bob Dylan - Highway 61
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
Quasi - The Sword Of God
