:) Kudos to you!
And yeah... I've been vegetarian for, um, 4 years now? Wow. Not vegan, coz that would be too tough. I eat dairy and eggs, but only from humanely treated animals (I've actually personally examined a couple of the farms in the area... bah!). It's pretty easy in major cities, *especially* San Francisco... but on cross-country roadtrips through the middle of nowhere? I fucking starve (or live off banana chips). :(

I went vegan about a week ago (except when I go out to eat, otherwise I'd only be able to have a green salad wherever I go and that's not healthy). Been vegetarian except for a brief hiatus this summer for over a year and a half.

Actually, most Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, Japanese, Thai, Indian, etc... restaurants have a lot of vegan dishes that are far better than a green salad. In fact, at least about half the dishes from each (except Japanese) are vegan.
I actually tend to eat vegan when I go out, unless I know the restaurant uses acceptable dairy/egg/etc... (once again, easy in SF... tough most everywhere else).

christ on a crap pile, blamo needs to go to Derek Zoolander's "School for Kids That Can't Read Good and Want to Learn To Do Other Things Good, Too" because i originally said vegetarian, iggy was like wtf mate so i said, "WHATEVER, MEATLESS" as in, "WHATEVER, FINE, I MEAN MEATLESS" which implies they should have more meatless dishes!
And whatevers, most people would understand what semi-vegetarian means and that it isn't implying the exclusion of all meat, so i'm not really too bothered if it's going to rile one who holds so much weight on labels tbh : (

But you said fish was "vegetarian"!!!1
And "semi-vegetarian" refering to fish is very offensive to a vegetarian. It's an oxymoron... like "semi-kosher" or "semi-alive".

Well obviously if there's a tasty vegan option I'll have that. But my mom doesn't want to choose restaurants just because they're vegan, so I unbend if I have to so I don't go hungry, but that's only happened once so far. I live in the Bay Area. Cafe Gratitude is the best.

And I think you can be semi-vegetarian. There's a big difference between someone who eats meat once every other week than someone to eats it every day, 3x a day. You're not 100%, but you still help lessen the consumption, so that's cool in my book.

The Dali Lama eats meat only every second day -thus halving his consumption.

Peter, please explain to me this "ceviche" concept and why having a bar to serve them is so cool.
ceviche is raw fish that is "cooked" using citrus juice like lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, etc. It's basically central america's take on sashimi, but done differently.
at a ceviche bar, you can order this style of raw fish and watch the person make it in front of you and taste truly fresh fish in it's finest form.

If a vegetarian eats meat EVER, they are not vegetarian enough to proudly claim the label "vegetarian".
Vegetarians don't eat meat. Not once a month, or once a year.
Peter
10-03-2007, 01:00 PM
Vegetarian = eating nothing that has/had a central nervous system.
Fishetarian = eating fish but nothing that flies, walks or slithers
Chickentarian = Eating chicken, but nothing else that has a central nervous system
Vegan = Eating nothing that has anything to do with any animal product

Why are fish not meat again? I mean like, why do so many people think they are the exception to the 'not eating animals' rule?
Peter
10-03-2007, 03:29 PM
because they REALLY LOVE eating animals, but think that fish don't have the same type of self-awareness that land- and air-dwelling animals have.

I never understood the fish is meat thing. It's an animal.
Pescatarian is someone who only eats fish.
Standard vegetarian is an lacto-ovo vegetarian.
I've seen semi-vegetarian as someone who doesn't eat red meat, and eats very little meat. They're not calling themselves vegetarian, but they show that they eat vegetarian a lot of the time.
I also hate the whole "I'm a carnivore! I love meat!" thing. No, you're not a carnivore. You're an omnivore. Unless you really do eat only meat, like the guy who's trying to turn himself into a tiger.
Whatever, I don't care. Eat meat if you want to is my philosophy, me preaching isn't going to change your mind. It's a personal choice.

Well, there is that one argument that fish don't feel pain, so it's okay. But that seems kind of specious, because by that logic it should be okay to eat anything a long as it doesn't feel pain. Like cows that die while they're asleep and so on.
Static Split Screen
10-04-2007, 03:01 AM
You're completely right. That's weird. They could inject any animal with painkillers and then skin it alive, by that reasoning.
Though actually I don't have any moral obligations to eating fish. I just don't feel much compassion for them, horrible as it sounds. I don't eat it because I don't like it.
