For reals. Ubuntu is like.... at the point now where I can use it for just about everything. The only thing that it's can't hack yet is fancy graphics on an ATI card, because ATI are bastards and won't open source their driver. But the nerds will figure it out.

So yeah, I pretty much only use Windows now for games and film stuff. It's pretty sweet. Plus it's only ever crashed once and it doesn't even need a virus scanner.

P.S. Amarok is like the bestest music player ever.

They've released their driver for open sauce, mark!

I like ubuntu, but I can't get it to give me the right resolution (1440x900) :(

Same story with opensuse.

It apparently can be done; you just have to edit the setup file for your graphics...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=280683

or, you could just crank it up to 1680x1050... Ubuntu seems to be able to handle it just fine, and it looks lovely.

P.S. Even better now I have proper ATI drivers. Thanks for that!

I feel that way about switching to a Mac, but I know how much people hate self-righteous Apple owners. Really, I just am glad to be far away from Windows.

Are you on Linux as well, HOHN? :O

No, I think he is another jobby sucker.

:O

If you have one of those Intel Macs, can you run Linux on it?

Markus Maximus, I did edit my config file and such, but I think my monitor is just a bitch. We'll see what happens when I get my 22" Iyama, or whatever I'm getting. Maybe the new Samsung one.

How is the new ATI driver working out for you?

Pretty sweet. It doesn't seem to like VLC or Compiz though. But that's nothing major.

Ok, so 7.10 (release candidate) got my resolution right, so I'm using it just now.

Recommend some programs to me! Mainly media stuff, or games.

I am rocking the 7.10 as well now!

Let's see... definitely Amarok for music. Uhm... Linux still doesn't have a lot of video players, they have VLC though, which usually does the trick. And Audacity is always good. I'm still experimenting with a lot of stuff though.....

And they still don't have a lot of advanced games yet either, unfortunately. It's all made by nerds so there's a lot of stuff like Nethack floating around. I've heard good things about Nexius, but I haven't tried it yet.

the main good linux game is a commercial one called dominions 3. i think it's some sort of fantasy strategy game.

it's not like i could play any 3d games anyway, cos i can't even get compiz to work. can't be bothered.

it boots so fast, so i use it if i just have to check my mail.

I couldn't get compiz to work either. But from looking around on the forums it seems to be more of an art than a science to most people. So I think the problem is probably more to do with compiz than with Ubuntu.

But yeah, I love how fast it is also. Like I say, I just use Windows now for video editing pretty much. And games, but I don't have time to be playing games right now.

How different is 7.10 from the older versions? I'm going to test it out in VMWARE for the next few weeks, and will eventually dual boot with XP (though I really love the GUI in MS office 2007).

Compiz hates my computer. Won't have anything to do with it. I am really starting to regret switching to ATI now. :(

A Radeon X1650. Anything 3D runs kind of slowly, but with Compiz, the whole thing just ground to a halt. When you scroll down in Firefox you can actually see it redrawing each frame. So I had to take it out of there, and it took half my graphics settings with it which was kind of annoying.

Oh well. I am still digging the regular Ubuntu.

What does Amiga OS do, exactly? I've heard a few people swear by it....

The machines themselves had a tendency to go yellow over time if one smoked around them. I associate amigas very strongly with my life from 0 to 10.

Haha...so true...

I had an Amiga 1200 <3

My computer that has Ubuntu gave up the ghost, it had a bad power supply. Instead of repairing it, I just decided to get a new PC. It has Vista... it has to be the single most annoying OS ever. It questions everything you do.

Me: "Install Random Game"
Windows: "Windows needs your permission to execute this: Permit or Deny"
Me: "Accept"
Windows: "You must be an Administrator to execute this: Ok or Cancel"
Me: "Ok"
Windows: "This game is not supported by Windows Vista"
Me: "Sigh."

It's like the Apple PC vs Mac ads. Which I dislike because they're kind of smug and skewed but then again Vista is Microsoft's worst OS since Windows ME. What were they thinking when they let this stuff out to market?

I find the password authentication in Ubuntu (requiring a password to change stuff in the terminal while I'm already logged in?) to be almost as annoying as the system bureaucracy in Vista.

They turned a product that was half way user friendly into this questioning out of control system. They should of just designed the system to work Unix/Linux, have an administrator account for the system, and then have the common user, whenever you need to do system admin stuff su or sudo, don't be stupid and pop-up a ton of little dialog boxes, all it does is confuse people.

But I guess su, would have to mean re-education the population of non-power users, so instead just pop-up dialog boxes for which they'd just push ok to whatever it is anyway.

Oh well Microsoft showed us that they are addressing security at least, I think the dialog boxes are more of a PR thing than an actual functionality.

Speaking of which, did you see IE 8 is actually going to support web standards? The kicker is it's going to have 3 different engines, a forgiving one for IE 8 and newer standards, a strict standards one, and one for testing old versions of IE... The forgiving one of course will be selected to default as Microsoft doesn't want to ruffle feathers about people's junk code breaking in the new IE 8... bravo Microsoft. :-P
