It's awesome to see that one of my favorite bands is connected to Elliott in some way. Ben doesn’t say if he's a fan, but the way he talks about him leads me to believe he has much respect for him and his music. I guess Rob Perringer, who was in Carissa's Wierd and was also in Modest Mouse and one point, also played with Elliott. I guess he was pretty shaken up after his death, almost made him give up on playing music.
Here's an excerpt from a pitchfork interview from a couple months ago:
----------------------------------------------------
Ben: Actually, I met Robin in Seattle. He was the original drummer for Carissas's Wierd, which I later replaced him when he joined Modest Mouse, and around that time he was in Carissa's Wierd we got to know each other pretty well, and he went to Modest Mouse and later played with Elliott Smith and numerous people. He's done a lot of tech work for Scissors Sisters and Pixies and the Thrills and stuff like that. I hate to speak for him, but after the whole Elliott thing, he kind of decided to take a break from playing and do the tech stuff. And then, I had talked to him for awhile about joining up with us and playing extra guitar and eventually convinced him to come and get back into playing music, so he's been with us for a couple tours now and enjoying himself and doing a great job and we couldn’t be anymore happy with the band right now.

Sorry if this is old news!
