ive been thinking about this for months, i want to buy a nice one, but i can't decide which style i'd be happier with.

Never really liked the Telecaster. I always saw it as the redheaded stepchild always living in the shadow of the Strat. I thought its tone was inferior (though undoubtedly unique) and its body shape is ugly. On the other hand I know of some very talented musicians who use it (Tab Beniot to name one). The Les Paul has a lot more to offer simply because it comes in a lot more styles and modifications. I also prefer its tone which I think is a little more full and warm.

P.S.-My brother is building a solid-body electric. He told me he was using a Tele headstock and I immediately groaned with dissapointment. Nothing is as goofy looking as that headstock.

I was playing a custom LP last night through a Divided 13 amp and it was super sweet!! creamy noisy and waves of feedback, and i have the choice of a VOX AC30, Twin or Deluxe at my choosing (my friend has mad gits and amps)...hands down though the divided amp is butter....

I have an SG and a Strat i used to have a Tele but i sold it cuz i could not get away from my SG, i hardly even play my Strat anymore...beautiful guitar but my SG is killa!!

ummm Stratocaster?
I guess the Les Paul looks cooler than a Telecaster, but i'd be inclined to base your purchase on the type of sound you are going for. Les Paul is more of a full and warm tone like McCoy said, but i'd say the Tele, like the Strat, would be more versatile in its playability. More suited to many different styles of playing and different types of music.

The look of the tele is an acquired taste but not hard to come around to, especially if you get a Thinline which has an F hole and a cooler looking pickguard. I love my tele, but if I had my druthers I'd play a Gibson 333 or 335.

An "F" hole, eh? Sounds kinky. Go with that one.

tele's are ridiculously easy to play and get a good "general" sound from..
les pauls seem to do certain jobs better but not be able to do as many jobs..
IN MY OPINION!
k!

It's all about the tele for me. I had a thread not too incredibly long ago debating which guitar I should choose, and the response was overwhelmingly in favor of it.

I bought myself an American Ash Telecaster, and I love it.

And also, a Les Paul is too damned heavy for my taste.

they only thing i like about les pauls is they're good to play blistering rock and roll on if you're hooked up to a marshall amp

Try plugging one into a divided 13 amp....even better imo

Shape wise the Les Paul wins hands down, it's just an overall beautiful shape and contour, they are a bit heavy but my American series strat is heavier than some of the newer LPs so go figure?

The guitars you have chosen are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

The LP has dual humbuckers and the Tele has two single coils....and much less switching options than you find on a single-single-single setup (ie. Stratocaster).

I would recommend playing them alot...before making any decisions....buying one based off of peoples descriptions of sound is kind of absurd. Words are never accurate enough descriptions for sound. Especially between two different minds

The tele is going to be lighter physically and in the sound department. Again...your asking about two guitars that have almost nothing in common...as far as geetars go.

I believe he did say "based on looks alone".

Get the Deluxe Ash Strat, lighter than Alder and better harmonics. IMO

they're completely at the opposite ends of the guitar sonic spectrum. teles are all over country music, but jimmy page used one on led zeppelin 1 and i think 2 also before switching to les pauls. they have two single coil pickups and the bridge pickup has a lot of twang. les pauls have 2 humbuckers and are much heavier and thicker sounding. of course, there's a lot of variation. you can get almost any pickup config on any guitar, but if you're going to buy a stock git, that's what you're gonna get. as for looks, they're both single cuts. i prefer archtops just because i like the strings up higher than the pots and i think they look better,

i have an lp-style guitar with a p-90 and a mini humbucker and tremolo, but i've thought about buying a tele thinline. i used to have an lp studio that was good. i played a vintage lp once that was too expensive at the time once, and it sounded like a thunderstorm. beautiful.
