Now I would leave room for bias as I've only heard opinions from his fans, but it's supposed to have a great sound and be really quite cheap.

His guitar was actually a non-nippon gakki. I also have a non-nippon gakki but i've heard that nippon gakki's sound better.

Ya $150 is dirt cheap for a guitar that most people would actually put on an album.

The J-45 is so so sexy and I need one. Yes, need. I wish they were $150 =(

$4200 here.. damn eh? :ok:

i doubt i'd ever see a used one in my city, though i might get lucky when i move state

http://elderly.com/images/vintage/26U/26U-1704_front.jpg

these aren't too shabby either

though i would prefer another 1964 model, this one here is '66 :)
the 64 doesn't have that funky steel thing on the bridge, although i imagine that would help the structure somewhat.
mine had a big crack on the top.. but still sounded like no other 12 string i've heard!
no martin comes close.. hee hee!

beware of the gibsons. There is a lot of difference between one J-45 and another.

Elliott used his Yamaha all the way up to Figure 8. They are lovely guitars that sound really good when recorded.

Good strings are as important as a good guitar. Elliott used John Pearse Medium Gauge Phosphor-Bronze. I have them and personally, I can't hear any difference between them and other leading brands.

classic...
I need me a good $150 guitar.

And Elliott's talent. He could have at least willed it to someone. He doesn't need it anymore, does he?
But there's some serious jamming up in heaven...

Yeah, probably big-name stores have it like SamAsh or Guitar Center if you've got one of those nearby. I've got a Yamaha F-335. Are those any good? And how much would repairing the frets and the action probably run?

im not sure man, I had a sweet little solid - top vintage but I knocked it over and the neck snapped :O I fuckin loved that guitar aswell, so for the last year ive been using this obscenely big gibson replica, ive developed a sentimental attachment to it though, having learned songs like independence day and happiness etc on it. But I hate it its just waaayy too big for me!

haha, that can be a double meaning. if my guitar broke, I'd be crying. But even if you've got a giant one to replace it, still a guitar. You should get one of those Spanish mariachi ones. They're tiny, the sound's too loud for my voice, but it was nice.

Nope, around $50 is pretty standard. Over 50 is a lot.

Is it really worth it on a Yamaha F-335?

Not to mention the guitar's only $150. Or should I just get the action lowered?

TempodiMorire
08-25-2007, 06:02 PM
Looks like a fine guitar to me. I'd pay the $50,and think of it as sort of as money well spent. If its done correctly, u won't need it done again, its just a once of so, its worth it :)

EDIT: just lower the action, if its causing you problems, whatever that costs

fwoty oz
08-25-2007, 06:04 PM
If you've never had it done it'll make a world of difference. It's up to you & how seriously you take guitar. I would never dream of not having a professional set up done on any of my guitars when I get them but I always spend WAY too much money on music gear.

i played one of these for a while in a shop while looking for a new guitar.
they're not bad for the price i think.
in the end they are what they are for the money.. which sounds dumb but is true.
a fair guitar no less!
you could do lot worse for the same price ;)

sorry to hijack the thread but I was always meaning to ask ,someone or anyone:

Where are elliotts guitars now?

With the family, with larry? In new monkey?!? OR what

If I was older and richer I'd bid so much money for one of his guitars, well for that cherry one, mmmmmm yeh, that be good

brainwarmer had the chance to play elliott smiths guitar, they threw together some lyrics probably in 2 minutes flat to make this:

P.S if my posts aren't that coherant tonight its coz I'm slightly drunk and a little tired, yeh.

Personally like the Martins the best out of what I've played, but I've never had a chance to try out a Gibson acoustic. Basically though, when you're looking at Gibsons and Martins and stuff of that caliber, a guitar of Yamaha's quality for $150 is a definite steal. It's all about how much you're willing to shell out for the tone you want. That and being able to say "Hey, my guitar costs $2000 more than yours" (which my friend has reminded me about his PRS more than once).
