Who here likes them and what are your favorites?
I was thinking about making an all instrumental cd but I am not sure yet.
Some of my favorites.
Samba Pa Ti-Santana
Peaches en Regalia-Frank Zappa
Fire on High-ELO
untitled 3-Sigur Ros
Let's Go Away For A While-The Beach Boys

Ramparts is really good stuff. There's some good instrumentals on his first two records, too.
I'm not the biggest fan of instrumentals, in general. Some of them are really good, obviously, but I usually need some vocals. I've just never heard many instances of people "saying" much with their instrument, you know? Although I know there are tons of people who would beg to differ with me on that.
Although I will say...
Nobuo Uematsu is a God damn genius. Now THERE is a guy who knows how to speak volumes without any sort of vocal necessary.

My girlfriend were in Target the other day, and she pushed some button on one of those CD previews and I heard this piece of music that I'd wondered for YEARS what it was. It was Moonlight Sonata. Again, gooood stuff.
I guess maybe I'm not so anti-instrumental as I thought I was?

i think part of it is most songwriters see instrumentals as verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus typical song structure, just minus the lyrics.
but thing is, if you're writing an instrumental, you should use totally different structures, ones that rely far less on repetition. i mean, that structure has you sitting through the exact same musical ideas of the chorus three times in each listen! how boring is that!
you've got to think differently to write them. and...most people don't. they just don't add the lyrics, so what it sounds like is exactly what they've made - a song that lacks something.

Laguna Sunrise - Black Sabbath
Thats all i can think of, if jazz ain't included. If it is:
My Favorite Things(song) - John Coltrane
Kind of Blue(album) - Miles Davis
Time Out (album)- Dave Brubeck Quartet

Good point.
As far as pop songwriting goes, any time I "repeat" part of a song in one of my songs, I always try to add a new element. Listening to the same part again without any change IS boring, especially when people have the balls to actually just "cut and paste" a chorus over and over in a song. What the hell is the point in that, anyways?
But yes, I agree with what you're saying.

I once heard a "Little Wing" instrumental, but I don't think it was played by Jimi...

cos for some reason people have got it into their heads that the first listen is somehow what really matters, and they want to make songs that give the most on that first taste, and less each time after, instead of making something that reveals more and more with each encounter. stupid stupid stupid.
 on not being one of those people.

Cool :)
A lot of people reply with "Final Fantasy? You mean he does video game music?"
But some of his work is just incredible. The soundtrack to Final Fantasy VII (7) is one of my favorites, but I really love the soundtracks IV - VII (4-7). There IS some good stuff on 1-3, but it was very limited with the 8-bit cartridges and I'm not happy with the sound of the music on the 'remakes' of the first three games.
I haven't played any games after 8 so I'm a little more unfamiliar with them.
I may compile a quick "best of" of some of my favorites soon and post it here.

An old one - "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams.
Anything by Leo Kottke - my favorite is "Bean Time," off Greenhouse, but you couldn't go wrong with anything off 6- and 12- String Guitar.
