i was just over on the Alice In Chains board that I hadn't visited in awhile and came across this...

'Discussing the track "Bleeding The Orchid," Corgan says it was indirectly inspired by the death of Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley. "Alice In Chains was a band that I didn’t fully appreciate in the early ‘90’s because we were all sort of competitors, and they were kind of more metal….and I wasn’t man enough to appreciate them." The song is about “what a lot of us have been through from the Gen X bands…Jimmy’s a father now, Courtney [Love]’s on round 17 of drama….it was a bit of a cost assessment of a song about what it meant to sort of go through that."

I thought that this was kind of interesting and I suppose it would explain the sea swarming around your head that is Billy's voice in the chorus.

yes. that was a pretty good interview. can't remember who conducted it, but they listened to the album and talked about the songs; it was in 4 parts. the link is here on BlamoNet somewhere...

Yeah, that was a good interview. Helped me really "get" the album a lot more.

It's funny though... just because of the way it sounds, "Bleeding the Orchid" reminds me a lot more of APC (A Perfect Circle) than it does AIC.

Do you mean someone mentioned it on the forum (and if so, more details pls? Haha...) or do you mean Aaron posted it on the Siva main page? I'd like to read it :)

Yeah, I remember hearing that. I'm trying to block it out though... I'd hate to have to think about Alice In Chains everytime I hear Bleeding the Orchid... would totally ruin the song.

And Billy loves the number 17, doesn't he?

I don't think I'd hate Alice in Chains so much if I didn't have to listen to the same two fucking songs every fucking day on DC101. ("Man in the Box" and "Rooster"....with "Would" being a tertiary offender.)

IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK TO VARY THE PLAYLIST A LITTLE, BOYS? NO? GREAT.

I like our rock station down here, when I do listen to the radio, there's a decent mix of classic AIC music, and SP and AIC are two my two favorite bands. I'd much rather see AIC touring with SP than Velvet Revolver. God, I gotta sit through VR just to see AIC ::shudders::

I once watched this thing... it was a Heart tribute concert kinda thing, but with Heart playing (a tribute to themselves?). And oddly enough Rufus Wainwright was there (the reason I was watching). And Alice In Chains was there, too... And they had members of Heart, Alice In Chains, and Rufus Wainwright in a room together being interviewed. And the entire time there was this thick tension (may have just been perceived) and this "what the fuck is Rufus doing there?" thought running through my head. A classic "which doesn't belong?" question.

And Rufus was asked about his love of Heart and how he felt being invited to play, and he said the most poignant thing (paraphrased): "I love Heart, and it's an honor to be here and be welcomed by the kind of people who beat me up in highschool"... and the members of Heart and AIC laughed. Rufus looked dead serious (may have just been the drugs, though).

To be honest, that's pretty weird to have any of those three acts playing together. I mean, I know people tend to put Heart in the "classic rock" category, but that's being generous. And even if they do deserve to be grouped into that genre, AIC still wouldn't fit in there. And obviously neither would Rufus. Still, hats off to whoever put that lineup together simply because I guess it's a little something for everyone.

Anyway, I must have missed something... AIC is touring with Velvet Revolver? Who is singing Layne's parts?

It's not weird at all having Heart and AiC play together, Ann Wilson did vocals on Brother and Am I Inside from Sap.

Shit. Now I officially feel like a dumbass. I never knew that was her.

Oh well. That still doesn't me hate "Oooooohhhh Barricuda!!!" any less.

Jerry is actually very good friends with the Wilson sisters. The main guitar he used to record Sap was actually borrowed from them. It kind of makes sense that AIC would have been the band to pay tribute to Heart. AIC's new vocalist is Comes With The fall vocalist William DuVall, and he's badass. I saw AIC twice last year with him, and to be honest, he's a much better frontman than layne was and he nails the vocals perfectly as he's a great vocalist in his own right. Currently AIC is about to tour with VR, that does kind of suck, considering that they're only going to get to play an hour when on there headlining tour last year they played over two hours.

Heart is fucking awesome. Billy Crogan is such a douche -- I mean, Alice In Chains were totally "metal". Is he fucking serious? Lame in the beginning, I admit it, but they were far from metal. Not to mention that I'm sure he can understand where they were coming from -- most of "Dirt" was sung or lyrically inspired by heroin.

Man, that would be a killer show. I like Velvet Revolver (they're not STP or GNR for sure, but still a good band) and I've always believed that AIC is one of the few bands that could carry on without their original lead singer because let's face it... Jerry wrote the majority of the songs and sang just as much as Layne did. Not that I don't love Layne... they guy was amazing... but part of me does resent him a little simply because his addiction kept AIC from reaching their full potential. In my opinion, they were the quintessential "grunge" band because they personified all the aspects of the era. Moreso than Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden (to be honest, I've never considered Soundgarden to be grunge, but they always get grouped into the category), STP or whoever else.

Dude, it's not like he insulted them... he actually gave them a compliment and more or less criticized himself for not giving them enough attention when they were around. I swear, people will twist anything Billy says and try and make him look bad.

Um... AIC *is* "more metal". Yeah, he didn't say they were "metal". He said they were "more metal". And that's true... relative to all the bands of that alternative rock ilk, they were one of the most, if not THE most, metal influenced... certainly way more than the Pumpkins. Not only in sound, but in attitude... they were the badass tattood set of the alt rock ilk, while Billy and Kurt, for example, were weird emotionally volatile nerds who wore dresses.

Yea was/is more metal. In fact there first big tour was on Clash Of The Titans, which saw them sharing a bill with Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer I think. There label even labeled them as a metal band. It wasn't until Dirt was released that the label lumped them into the hard rock/alternative genre.
Also, Alice In Chains, or as it was originally, Alice N' Chains, was kind of a rip of Guns N' Roses, another band that was labeled metal at that time.
