I was having a discussion the other day with my friend about martinis. we had one in a little bar-joint type hang out and they made them with vodka and I said, "I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be made with another kind of liqueur" (gin). Well, as it turns out (thanks to Wiki) it seems it's popular today to make them with Vodka and suryp instead of gin and whatever the other two ingredients were.

so I want to know, where can you get a traditionally made martini? It seems most places make them with Vodka and suryp instead.

yeah...I really don't care to buy alcohol at all and take it home. 1)I don't trust myself enough for such things. 2)I don't trust my roomate 3)it's an unwanted temptation and quite possibly a strong push for social pressure with friends around.

Gin/Vodka and Vermouth with an olive (sp?) A dirty martini would be with olive juice mixed in, I believe. You should be able to get a traditional martini at any bar.

I don't think you need to specify it as traditional... But what do I know, I do most of my drinking at home.

You should just be able to ask for a gin/vodka martini. I'd think they would specify if they were gonna make you a chick martini.

Yeah, just specify the liquor you want used. Martini, Bombay, fairly dry. Etc. I like martinis. I haven't had one in a billion years.

that makes sense.

umm. I'd like to stay away from anything with vodka, jager, tequila, kahlua, and rum.

Whiskey? so in 5 years how do you see yourself in reguards to alcohol? vyo yo yo?

In Dust and Ashes
07-22-2007, 12:18 AM
I've only ever had whiskey in sprite and that was awful.

I don't know how I'll be. I'm hoping that I'll be like my mom. She likes alcohol and respects alcohol, but she's very reserved and controlled with it and I like that. I respect that a lot. She gets so excited to pull out the wine on special occasions and share it with everyone. :)

my dad, on the other hand, is a brick wall. the only time he drinks is when Mom convinces him that a little bit of wine is good for him. And even then, he'll do it with a sour face and hide it as much as possible.

my problem is that I lack self control and I have a very addictive personality. Once I start something that I like, I have a hard time making myself stop. For that reason, I have to be about as uptight as my dad with alcohol in order to keep myself from doing things that I don't want to do.

She is I think. It may not be a good idea to toy with alcohol (and drugs). Once Pandora's box is open, it can't be closed again.

If you get a problem, it's there forever. You can't always control it, especially if you love it.

I'm not neccessarily talking about a long term addiction. But I'm strongly against any misuse of alcohol (i.e. getting drunk) and it's in those singled out moments that I worry about. I don't ever want to drink more than is good for me.

Why drink if you are against getting drunk? One drink can be enough to alter your morals and principles.

I've got all kinds of righteous rules and regulations pertaining to drinking, usually I throw all those out the window after my "2 beer limit". Just last night I was angry at myself again. I start off with the best intentions to be responsible every time.

I can only control myself when drinking alone, if I'm with anyone else, I don't even think. I hate the ignorant, auto-pilot part of myself that downs one after another. Even when I'm doing that, I delude myself into thinking that I'm controlling it.

I'm against misusing alcohol also. I have all my snooty thoughts and judgemental attitudes about abusers in place when sober.

How To Order A Martini (From A Real Bartender):

If you would like a classic martini, the way Winston Churchill drank them:
"I'll have a (name of gin) martini up with a couple olives." (Churchill would NEVER drink a vodka martini).

If you would like a martini with very little vermouth:
"I'll have a (name of gin/vodka) martini dry, up with a couple olives."

If you would like a martini with extra vermouth:
"I'll have a (name of gin/vodka) martini wet, up with a couple olives."

You could of course order a martini on the rocks using the same tactics but supstituting "up" for "on the rocks."

If you would like a dirty martini:
"I'll have a (name of gin/vodka) dirty martini up, with a couple olives."

As far as the WIKI entry saying that it's now "vodka and syrup," that's probably referring to flavored martinis (cosmopolitans, apple martinis, etc), in which case the "syrup" they're referring to is shnapps or simply syrups (water/sugar dissolved) or some other flavoring method. These are not martinis, they're just served in a martini glass.

uh huh. ok.
I'm different.

oh, and thanks Peter. Although that was lengthy and I didn't understand a thing. I just went to the bartender and asked for a gin martini and he asked a few questions that I didn't know, so I just said, "yeah sure, whatever."
I can now say with confidence that I don't like martinis. I guess I'm just a girly girl. I'll stick with the fruit and flower.

Next on my list: mimosa. this one should be fantastic for a lot of reasons. a)I like champagne b)I like the mimosa tree and it's lovely flowers c)I love the word mimosa. It's one of the most pretty words to say.

I was different too. I drank for 8 years unscathed. That's the ironic part Jackie.

If you ever crave a drink, not for fun or to get high, but to escape or deal with life, you will understand.

I'm not a fortune teller and I don't presume to know you, or what will happen in your future. But if you believe 100% that you will never have a drug or alcohol problem because you're smarter and more in control than that, welcome to the club.

I'm telling you this stuff only to make you think for a moment. You're going to do what you want to do. I wouldn't listen to anyone either.

No one told me how easy, painless and unnoticeable it is to lose yourself. It can take less than 2 months to be a new person that you don't even know anymore.

Until you do stuff, you don't know which type you are.

There, enough of my public service announcement!!! !!!!!

Do you hate beer Jackie?

If you like the taste of Dr. Pepper, there is a drink I recommend. I have no clue what's in it, but they set the shot glass full of (?) on fire, then you quickly drop it into a mug of beer and chug it quickly! I Love it! The mess of it splashing all over just adds to the excitement.

Do you like the taste of alcohol or do you want to not even notice it?

In Dust and Ashes
07-28-2007, 10:59 AM
I don't like beer and I don't do anything that involves the word "bomb" or any stupid drinks like the Prairie Fire...or anything that needs to be chugged quickly.

some alcohol is fine to taste, but I don't like strong drinks. the martini was WAY too strong.

also, being 21 is BORING.
I used to go downtown and drink coffee and play chess and watch weird people through the window and we'd laugh and talk until the shop closed at midnight and then we'd run around town and dance in the streets and jump in the fountains....
Now all my 21 friends want to take me to 21 places and all we do is sit in dingy little bars with smoke that makes my throat hurt and get drinks and sit and talk about the drinks we got and the drinks we've had and the drinks we're going to get. and then when we get bored there, we move to another bar and do the same thing.

I don't want to grow up.

I had a girly drink last night (malibu rum, cranberry juice, pineapple juice) and halfway through I thought I was going to die. My stomach felt like it was bleeding and my head felt like it was going to explode, then i couldn't breathe which may or may not be related. I literally thought I was going to die. NEVER AGAIN.

Ages ago the same thing happened after a few smirnoff ice's. My body can't handle all that sugary disgustingness.

Sounds like your friends are boring.

Any age is what you make it. I have done, and still do stupid stuff that isn't "adult friendly". I don't mind looking like an idiot in the name of fun. Most of the time I am not drunk when I act silly.

They are probably just trying to act all grown up, like they are told to do. Same thing happens when kids start elementary school. It's sad. In both instances it's like "fun times over" now you have to conform to society.
