Looks like the idiots over at Sony finally got the point, and dropped that whopping price tag. I think I might actually get one now.

Still too much. I don't think I'd pay more than £75 for it.

I know. But Metal Gear is coming out soon, and all I need is an excuse.

Yeah. They must've felt the sting of those thousands of thousands of units just sitting on the shelf, meanwhile the shelves that have Wii's on top of them aren't even dusty.

If Konami stay true to form, it will eventually come out on PC.

I might get one eventually, but it's gonna need a real killer exclusive app. If I ever decide I want a blu-ray player, I'll get a PS3. But then I guess that was true even before the price drop.

According to this blog on Wired (http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/07/playstation-3-p.html), the lower price is partly because they removed the Emotion Engine chip which gave better backwards compatibility. Still, I'd rather have the bigger hard drive anyway, but it's kind of misleading.

They've removed the PS2 hardware emulation and it is now going to software emulation, which may or may not hinder PS2 performance.

I wouldn't call that a price slash. Maybe more like a price paper cut.

Oh wow! Now it's only $500!

Thats still the price of two wii's.

that's exactly how the 360 runs old titles

so you're saying buy one now before they ship the chipless ps3s?

:erm i guess i have to now...

The 360 also can't play all Xbox titles.

What I'm trying to get at is that this is a BIG wtf, and they're quite possibly gimping the console just so they can sell more of them. Ooops, and they still sell them a huge loss anyways.

So what was the fucking point of all this?

Extreme desperation. I think this is the shortest amount of time it's ever taken for a system to receive a price cut.

Most of the time when a Console gets a price cut, it's because they've recouped most of the development cost or found a way to manufacture them a bunch cheaper. This is obviously a totally different can of worms, because I can almost say I know for a fact they haven't recouped any costs.

I REALLY wanted the PS3 to do well. But it just doesn't look like it will.

It's still too high even if they keep saying it's too low as it is. There aren't enough good games out for it or anything so far for a price tag like that. The freaking 360 Elite costs less and has 40 more GBs of space than the $600 PS3.

Thats all most people are going to care about when it comes to these things.

I'm aware, I'm just clarifying. They're going to run the same way, though I would suspect that the PS3 would be able to run it at a smoother rate due to the specs it has.

Any PSP owners? Looks like sony will be releasing a thinner, lighter version come September. It will also come in a few more colors, and have video output that will allow you to connect and play on a television. I've had one since the psp first dropped, and I still use it often. It was only worth the money when I got into hacking it and unlocked its true potential. The only negative as far as I'm concerned was it's size, which this new one will apparently remedy.

I may end up trading my old one in for one of those if it is going to have a Television input. I always thought the sheer size of some of the PSP games weren't always too great for a portable.

The PS3 doesn't really have "good specs"

It's a crappy grahpics accelerator coupled with a bunch if technology that just isn't supported right now.

Honestly, I'm just kind of surprised it took Sony this long to put out a hard-drive based system. It's much easier to rip the games straight to the drive and just fucking playing them straight away, loading times be damned.

I dunno if I could get a PS3. Fucking with my xbox is more fun, and I got it 70 bucks used. The PS2's are still selling for a little over 100 used, and it's such a chore to mod...

Load times still exist on hard drives.

I know. I'd say there are only a handful of games worth getting that were released for the system. Which is why hacking it is so essential. I have NES, SNES, SEGA, GB Advanced, Neo Geo Cd emulators running on it. Plus a PSX emulator that I'm playing Final Fantasy VIII, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Capcom Vs Street Fighter with at the moment. Plus, a ripped psp game called lumines 2, which is probably the best game ever released for the psp. A few apps like a wifi searcher, and a few ports of classic games like tetris. Plus, Kill Bill in the UMD drive. All on a 2GB memory stick. I figure it takes a few months before the new one is hacked.

Yeah. But they're faster. Plus they don't skip.

Sometimes.

It depends on the data, and how it is stored on the drive.

well, if it's modded, the drive is already partitioned. it pretty much only goes in one place.

god...i'd buy the guy who created DVD2XBOX a case of beer if i could

it's still £425 here in the UK. Fuck that, I'm not payin that much money for a console.

No, it isn't worth it. There is no doubt the PS3 will be the best machine but none of the latest consoles are worth crap right now.

Best console around right now = PS2.
