Hi There, Am Pam

In the days of my youth, beer was just a shortcut to get drunk. I say this with some sincerity - the major reason why teenagers binge drink is because they drink shitty, cheap beer. Why else would anyone, in their right mind, drink Nutty Ice?
I'll post some recommendations based on style, but first, for people who have no idea what individual styles mean, I'll post some general suggestions. Some of these beers will require a little searching - just go to your local beer distributors & forget about supermarkets/7-Elevens. I can't guarantee what you'll be able to find, but my list generally refers to American distributors.
For those who know nothing about beer:
Weyerbacher - Raspberry Imperial Stout (out of season, hard to find now), Old Heathen (easier to find), Merry Monks (even easier)
Unibroue - Trios Pistols or La Fin Du Monde (almost every distributor I've gone to has these beer)
Stone - I.P.A. (very easy to find), Russian Imperial Stout (not sure), Arrogant Bastard Ale (never had it, but highly rated)
Victory - Hop Wallop (Fairly Easy), Hop Devil (Easy), Prima Pils (Fairly Easy), Storm King Stout (generally easy)
For people who hate beer:
Great Divide - Wild Raspberry (might be hard to find, but it's a well made fruit beer, and most fruit beers aren't any good)
Sierra Nevada - Pale Ale (Extremely easy to find, rather light, but flavorful)
Now for the beer geeks:
Stouts:
Weyerbacher - again, the Raspberry Imperial or Old Heathen (same beers, but the raspberry has... well, raspberries added), also recommended is Hersey, which is oak barrel aged Old Heathen
Great Divide - Yeti (A massive stout, one of the best I've had)
Stone - Yeah, again, their Russian Imperial Stout (in the top 25 on Beer Advocate.com)
Victory - You guessed it, Storm King
Mackeson Triple XXX Stout - A milk stout, and very different, but quite sweet. Excellent stuff.
Tripels (just a note, I haven't tried many actual Belgian-made Tripels because they're damn expensive ($10 a bottle) I'm sure they might be better than what I recommend):
Weyerbacher - Merry Monks
River Horse - Tripel Horse (one of my favorites)
Brasserie d'Achouffe - Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel (I've only had this once, but I was very impressed)
Allagash - Allagash Tripel Reserve
IPAs (including Double IPAs):
Weyerbacher - Double Simcoe IPA (HUGE beer, a must have for those who love Double IPAs)
Great Divide - Hercules Double IPA (again, HUGE)
Stone - I.P.A. & Ruination (never actually had Ruination, but it's highly rated)
Avery - Maharaja (not cheap, but very good)
Ok, I've had enough of compiling a list. Now it's your turn. GO!

blue moon plz
Blue Moon was a favorite beer of mine before I tried the American Microbreweries, and it's one of the best common beers.
Also, Smithwicks, Boddingtons, Abita Purple Haze, Abita Amber (all Abita is good), Dos Equis, Sol, Modelo....
Sorry to say that I wasn't a huge fan of any of those (the ones I've tried). Purple Haze was pretty good, although a bit artificial tasting (still better than most fruit beers). Smithwicks ain't bad, though.
I just bought a six pack of Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot Barleywine. About to dip into one now.

Great Divide - Hercules Double IPA (again, HUGE)
i tried this the other night and it tasted like a bouquet of ass to me : ( not really, but it was too floral-y which some may dig, but i am not a huge fan of too much sweetness.
i can't stop drinking beer lately. I've been on a Dogfish kick i have to say, drinking mostly their indian brown ale, Raison D'etre, 60 and 90 minutes. I've been drinking Brooklyn brews' lager and brown ale lately which are alright, and just random IPAs from random micro brews from around here.
When i go out though i've been drinking mostly Anderson Valley's Hop Ottin (ipa) which i really enjoy, Smuttynose IPA which i like alright, Sierra Nevada pale ale, and when i have the money i'll go for something more opulent and expensive like Chimay white or this awesome belgian tripel my fav bar has but it was almost $8 for 12.5oz : ( it looks classy though!
i'm not into drinking stouts yet in my old life, but my sister pretty much only drinks stouts and from what i've had of hers i like the Left Hand Milk Stout and Old Rasputin's Russian Imperial Stout but she only likes it on draught but christ is that a crazy rich beer.
I was just on the site of the sister bar to the bar i go to most (it's owned by the same peeps and is in the next town) and it was voted #1 beer bar in the country by beer advocate in 2006 but i dont get it b/c they're like the same thing only my bar is bigger, nicer, and has twice the selection but whatevs!
Smithwicks ain't bad. I dislike Dos Equis tho.
Slightly similar to Smithwicks is Kilkenny which I enjoy muchly, as well as Guinness. Going less dark, I enjoy Newcastle Brown Ale when it's on draft.
One of the best ales I've had recently is by the Sweetwater Brewing Company, out of Atlanta. It's called "Blue" as it has a hint of blueberry.
Blue Moon is a great beer for one that's easy to find - and unfiltered (mmm!). I enjoy Yuengling and Sam Adams as well (esp their Summer Ale and Winter Lager seasonals). Locally I also indulge in Dominion (from Ashburn, VA).
Overall tho I much prefer ales to lager - I'm really not a big fan of pilsners (even the hallowed Urquell), tho Shiner Bock is not bad for it's price. I really don't like Rolling Rock or Heineken. And I won't even mention all the American-style lagers.
PS I've never heard of most of the beers you guys are talking about.

i don't even know how people drink most that shit (i mean american lagers and the like). Like when people say that their favorite beer is Bud LIGHT i'm like, why even bother? It tastes less than water.
I really like newcastle.
The first time I had Newcastle was from a can in an airport lounge. Bleh. I didn't try it again til I moved over here.
There's a place near work that does Newcastle in pitchers tho and it's guuud. I think last time there were 4 of us and we had 4 pitchers. :D And one of the guys only joined us for about 30 mins.
I think I've tried Bud once and Coors Light once... ewww ewww ewwwww. And at most places where the beer is $5+, it's the same or maybe an extra 50c/$1 to get a decent beer on tap instead of that shit.
I think American palates are definitely getting better tho. Just about everyone I know at work actually has good taste in beers.

That's probably because it's a Double IPA (exactly what it sounds like). Extremely hoppy, which tends to turn a lot of people off, but hopheads love it.

I can not express in words how proud of you I am, Bailey.
belgian tripel my fav bar has but it was almost $8 for 12.5oz : ( it looks classy though!
Tripels are my favorite types of beer! Well, it really depends on my mood, but I tend to think of them as my favorite (I've been on an I.P.A. kick recently, though).
i'm not into drinking stouts yet in my old life, but my sister pretty much only drinks stouts and from what i've had of hers i like the Left Hand Milk Stout and Old Rasputin's Russian Imperial Stout but she only likes it on draught but christ is that a crazy rich beer.
Left Hand Milk Stout is pretty damn good, but try the Mackeson XXX Milk Stout. That stuff is delicious, not to mention inexpensive.

Weird. This does make me really want to visit Boston, though!
PS I've never heard of most of the beers you guys are talking about.
If you happen to have any beer/soda distributors in your area, take a look around and see if you can find any of these beers. I think you'll be surprised at how different one beer style can be from the next. Imagine chocolate & cocobutter on one end of the spectrum, and flowers, pine, and fruit on the other end.
Quick analogy - the common beer you find on tap (even some of the more expensive "Imported" beers) compared to craft beer, is like grape juice is to wine. There really is a world of difference between the range of flavors.
Abita does a seasonal strawberry, a mardi gras bock and a "restoration ale" too.
Those actually sound really good. I think the only Abita beer I've ever seen is Purple Haze.
I think American palates are definitely getting better tho. Just about everyone I know at work actually has good taste in beers.
Definitely. I've noticed, at least in my area, that Supermarkets are carrying craft beer. Not just some of the more well known ones either, but ones generally reserved for the dusty corner of a beer distributor. My friend, who works for a Supermarket, says that they're selling fairly well.
I've been pretty big on IPAs lately. The Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA is delicious/intense.
Yes, the 60 Minute is pretty good, but the 90 Minute is awesome. There is also a 120 Minute IPA which has a 21% abv, and costs a whopping $12 or so. BTW, that's for one 12 oz. bottle. For obvious reasons, I've yet to try it.
BTW, if you happen to see it, try Weyerbacher's Double Simcoe IPA, as long as you can stomach really strong hoppiness (or Stone's IPA if you're more in the middle, still hoppy, but not anywhere nearly as much).

They're pretty good. I'm pimping Abita because the original brewery is about 2 miles from my house. They have this beer called Andigator, which I've never seen in stores, but is very high in alcohol content (for an American beer.) There's a local bar that has it on tap and they do this mixture called a "Barney" that is Andigator mixed with Purple Haze.
Hi There, Am Pam

Ahh yes, a dobblebock. I haven't had a whole lot of those, but I really liked the ones I remember having. In general, I tend to love beers with high alcohol content, and I think one of my friends mistakes that for liking the beer because of high abv. I think it's more because beers with high alcohol content have to be brewed to be complex & rich, or else the alcohol stands out. And I love complex beers.
Ever have a barleywine? They are always high in alcohol, and very complex. My favorite would (easily) be Weyerbacher's Insanity (it's their "Blithering Idiot" Barleywine aged in oak barrels. At 11.10%, the 22 oz. bomber bottle can completely knock you off your ass.

Last week, I ate dinner at this "authentic" German restaurant with a pretty good selection of imported beers. Anyway, I ordered a $12(!) bottle of this Lambic beer flavored with sour cherries. Kriek. It was really nice, though it tasted nothing like beer. It was very sweet, but not sickening-sweet like some - much lighter than those. Anyway, they sell it at Whole Foods, I've since learned.
How do you get in touch with a local distributer? I mean, do they sell individual 6-packs/bottles to the public? I've never heard of such a thing, though I do live in a bubble world.

Occasionally, I buy Budweiser because I like the fact that it is like water. The label artwork is beautiful. I like their image, and the ST. Louis brewery. It's always been around, so I feel somewhat loyal to the brand, like an old friend.
My favorite home brew is a Rye I.P.A. Also most of the beers we add wheat to are pretty good. I enjoy simple recipe beers more than elaborate odd flavors. Forcing yourself to drink 5 gallons of a beer you don't like can be brutal. And can take 6 months to finish, that uses up valuable keg space.
Some favorites:
Guinness
Warsteiner
Heineken-This week we got the cute little keg! Don't buy ones exposed to light-green bottles or clear, really skunk easily.
Samuel Adams
for summer, Corona.
for winter, I like stouts and extra hops, deeper flavors.
Then about every other week I try something new or pick a Belgian or flavored sort of thing.

I'm so jealous because Belgians tend to be my favorite. What's your favorite Tripel? I remember you have Chimay quite a bit, right? How much does a 750mL bottle cost? It's like $9-10 here, which annoys me. I really want to try it.

I was hoping you'd say Westmalle because I've heard other people recommend it, and if I'm going to spend the money, I want to make sure it's on one of the best.
The 750mL bottles I'm talking about were from beer distributors.
Just curious, as long as we're on the topic of price, I'm wondering what other people pay. I usually pay about $8-12 for an American Microbrewery 6 pack, with the price generally depending on the strength of the beer. So figure an average of about $10 for a 6 pack (Stone, Weyerbacher, Victory, etc...).

depends on what you like.
there's a lot of beer on there that i would never choose off that list, like kriek or hoegaarden for example. but if you're into that kind of beer, i'm sure there are some very good ones there.
that list also contains a lot of beers i have never heard of before.
off that list, i personally like the following beers:
- duvel
- westmalle (tripel)
- chimay (blue label)
- leffe (blond)
- orval
- delirium tremens
- affligem (blond)

6.5 is a lie. That's like Pat Williams's playing weight of 330...totally downplayed and inaccurate. Most beer I drink is at the 8 percent mark...because I like dark beer that makes me yell shit god damn that's flavorful with every sip.
a pint and a half is an exaggeration...that gives me a nice buzz..which is very impressive for a beer to do to folk like us. I'm 220 lbs and from the midwest...where all we can do for fun in the winter is drink heavily to keep warm...I can hold my booze.
i usually drink this stuff with my best friend when we both have time to make it back to the hometown. We average 5 pitchers a sitting...I couldn't tell you how many pints are in that because I'm as dumb as any American you'll find when it comes to measuring and numbers.
It's alot. We get piss drunk...then we usually go swimming off a bridge that goes over a small damn...the safest thing to do while drinking? hell no, but it's quite the exhilarating rush. It's alot. We get piss drunk...then we usually go swimming off a bridge that goes over a small damn...the safest thing to do while drinking? hell no, but it's quite the exhilarating rush. Some people dig skydiving and other death defying sports....I enjoy drinking and swimming in rapid moving water.

I'm not trying to impress anybody. I'm just rambling about the stupid shit I do. It's not supposed to be impressive..just stupid and maybe a bit funny.
whose going to be impressed by my stupid hobby of drinking and swimming..funny and moronic yes..impressive...naw. Impressive only if your a backwoods midwest redneck like me. I don't think too many people will take up this hobby..allthough tubing down the apple river is somewhat similar.

WTF are you talking about? What the hell does france have anything do with it? I'm not french, I'm American. And Chimay is Belgian!
And are you saying that the only countries that make good beer are Germany, Ireland and England? Belgium makes great beer! As does Poland, Spain and The Netherlands. Even the italians are getting into brewing artisan beers!

France has to do with EVERYTHING! or nothing. fuck if i know. I just wanted to throw out some stereotyped redneck criticism of anything foreign...so it just seemed logical to pick on the french.
i need a filter or warning on all posts that declares 90 percent of what I say is bullshit and sarcasm.
so where can I pick this stuff up and how much will it run me. I'll be entertaining this weekend...I figure to pretend I'm classier than my typical stock of 40s..I won't make guests suffer through my malt liquor fetish.

YA RLY!
I had uhhhhh a Yuengling, a Dogfish Head 60 min IPA and a Shiner Bock last night.
Peter
09-12-2007, 12:43 PM
and how did you feel about those fine brews will?
Yuengling was the only thing on happy hour they had at this crappy place other than Miller/Bud products. It was a pretty bad Yuengling too... and the pipes had condensation water above and a drop dripped into my ex-boss' glass of beer. Eww! It first we thought it was the beer bubbling but that would've been pretty crazy. At least the happy hour appetizers were pretty decent. So yeah then I had the Dogfish Head which I haven't tried before - it was much much better and easily worth the x2 cost of the Yuengling.
After we saw the movie we went to another place which I've been to many times and had many $2 Shiner Bocks... it's one of the few places I know that has 2 happy hours - 4-7 and then again from 10-12. Shiner Bock is a good beer for that price.

YA RLY!
O RLY?
reason I asked said stupid sounding question. My aunt used to order tons of liquor online...the harder to find brews and California wines. SO it was a somewhat relevant question...since I doubt I'll find what I'm looking for in the podunk liquor stores around here.
I'm not sure if it's even legal to send liquor via mail anymore. September 11 and stupid moral republican congress made mailing anything lame as hell.

you guys. I went to the bar today that Beer Advocate rated as #1, and they are having a trappist fest that costs $40! But you sample every beers from every trappist brewery, including one that is super rare. It's so expensive tho and i don't really like that bar so i dont know what to do.
ALSO i am fucking sick of gender discrimination. Today my sister and I went and had only 6oz. glasses each of Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout (great), Southern Tier Big Red (delicious and perfect), and split a Dogfish Head 120, and the guy cut us off. We weren't even anything at all, and he cut us off. Meanwhile, the place was full of drunk men who drove away and nothing was said to them. Honestly, one man could barely even walk and not a word was mentioned to him, yet the bartender scolded us because we were females. I am so irritated i'm gonna start another thread see ya
wow that sucks bigtime. i've never been cut off or been with anyone who was cut off!
me and this korean dude who's very close to me in age both got carded last week at lunch tho while no one else was. tho i suppose it was fair enough cos we're both under 30 and no one else was. usually they're more uniform tho and just card nearly everyone who isn't obviously old.
hehe kendra and i went to a $35 or so beer fest kinda thing with microbrewers etc. it also included good food too tho.
i am so jealous of belgian beers.
i just had a half n half with dinner.

I've never been cut off either. But generally once I'm drunk to the point where they would cut me off, I've stopped ordering drinks anyway so they don't have to. This generally occurs when I go to the bathroom and have to put my hand against the wall to keep my balance while I urinated and I say over and over in my head "oohhhhh fuck i'm drunk...ohhhhhhhh fuck i'm drunk."

lol i love that so much. I love whenever i pee and i'm wasted and i just stand in the stall and laugh sooo hard b/c i can't see straight :oh:
yeah we were cut off but not even drunk at ALL. We didn't seem drunk or anything, we were coherent and normal and everything. It was fucked up b/c i'm not kidding, there were people who couldn't even stand up straight, and they drove away. FUCKING SHIT

you mean westvleteren? that one is very rare indeed. (they have a couple of different beers though.) very hard to get, even here in belgium.
the abbey that makes them refuses to increase the amount they brew, because they don't need more income. and you can only buy them at the abbey on certain days. amount per buyer is limited to one or two crates and these days you even have to reserve your place in line by calling them up and giving up your car's license plate.
the biggest problem is that they have been elected as best beer in the world some time ago and now everybody wants them.
i think i've only had two of them in my entire life.
if i find them in bars (which is rare, because bars are not supposed to sell them), prices are insane (compared to other similar beers).
and i have never been refused a beer, and i have never seen anyone getting refused one. never ever. even in states that go far beyond not being able to go the bathroom without using the wall...

yesss it was wesvleteren. That is nutty how rare it is! I want to go so much but i am soooo poor, and i'm also hungover and in that "i'm never going to drink again!!1" state, which is deterring me from wanting to go : ( But that state only lasts till nighttime :O We'll see what happens though : (

i know! :D
i say you should go. $40 isn't that much for what you will be getting.
on the other hand, the idea of test-drinking all the trappists on one evening is kinda weird to me. is that one sip per beer? you miss the whole part between a full glass (the right glass for the beer you're drinking) and an empty one.

It's 2 - 4 oz. per trappist, so that's not too bad. The sign at the bar said, "and representatives from each brewery will be here to speak!" and my sister and i were so dumb and were like, 'AWESOME!' and my sister went and talked to the bartender about the event and he was like, "yeah so it's (blah blah blah) and obviously there won't be any representatives ;) and (blah blah blah)" and she was like, "yeahhh, obviously!" lol : ( we dum
