Some new one's I've recently discovered:

Cusamano - Nero D'avola (Sicily)
Robert Mondavi Private Selection - Riesling
Coppola - All the ones I've had are good
Blackstone - Merlot and Cabarnet Sauvignon

What are your suggestions?

Casa Lapostolle. Everything red of theirs I've liked; never had their whites. Give the edge, I guess, to the merlot.

I tried a sip of this amazing wine from cyprus. they use the very last of the season's grapes so it's delicious and sweet.

I don't like my wine to be too sweet. Maybe just a hint of sweetness.

Attacama - Cabarnet Sauvignon (from Chilie. It's cheap and very good)

I must say, for the price I paid, all the Nero D'Avola wines I've had have been quite good. Have you tried the Coppola malbec? Not too good. The claret is good though. Silver Oak is fantastic, especially the Napa Valley one. Duckhorn's wines are great too, especially their merlots. Cakebread makes a delicious cabernet sauvignon. The Hess Collection and Grgich make a pretty decent wine.

Go buy a bottle of Dashe Zinfandel from Cali. You can thank me later :) Also, if you see any Zinfandel by Scherrer Winery, buy that, too. oh, and C.G. D'arie.

God, I really enjoy wine but I'm still fairly stupid about it. I just love going to all the wineries here in wine country, Cali, and trying a whole barrage of different wines. It's too hard to get educated when I'd rather just be drinking the stuff. Also, I'm afraid that if I get too interested in California wines, it'll be such a heartbreak when I move to Montana in a couple of weeks.

I like to look for wine with funny pictures on them. I did a wiki on one I used to buy and found this out! :

Research has found that most American consumers, especially younger ones, dislike wine labels that picture chateaux, that appear elitist, and that are difficult to understand (Franson). "E. & J. Gallo Winery's Red Bicyclette is essentially a French jug wine, successfully branded by featuring a cartoon of a Frenchman in a beret riding a red bike with a dog following behind him" [1]. The friendly label has been a marketing success. Sales of the wine are growing rapidly in the United States

heh.

Best wine I've ever tasted was the house red in restaurants in Portugal. Costs nothing and leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling.

whenever I heard the words "sweet" and "red" in the same sentence and it's not referring to a dessert wine, I cringe.

red wine should NOT have residual sugar in it and proper red wine is always 100% dry. acidity; which makes your mouth water if it's high, and dry if it's not, is an entirely different story.

that's not wine. it's grape juice that's on the verge of turning into vinegar to which they add a shitload of sugar (called "chaptilization") and some alcohol. and no, i'm not being sarcastic, that's really what they do.

lol..i know. I have hideous taste in wine. Back when I had a classy gf she used to make me sample good stuff..not that I remember what any of it was.

Now that I'm classless and cry myself to sleep every night I just drink 40oz. and box wine..lol! Most of that is bullshit sarcasm...except for the 40oz. part..I still like my malt liquor...but after you hit a certain age after 20 your body just can't process cheap shitty wine, and hangover just get to be too vicious.

I'm too that lame point in my life where I'm too old to drink shitty booze and too young to afford good booze.

solution:

I use to think my friends were joking about the effectiveness of these things...but you really can turn cheap booze into high class tasting stuff by filtering it through these babies 2 or 3 times. Brandy works best IMO

ME TOO! I love red zin as well. I buy Ravenswood often, and also Rancho Zabaco. I first had Rancho Zabaco at Ted's Montana Grill, so yummy.

We are sisters in that aspect, Maddie, I think the spicy red zin reflects our spicy personalities :D

And Peter, thanks for the other Zin suggestions.

Any wine that costs more than $8 at the Russian market is gross. True. The cheaper wine is, the sweeter it is. The sweeter it is, the less alcohol tasting it is. The less alcoholy it is, the better it is.

I love cheap ass $5 white Zinfandel, Boone's Farm anything, and large bargain bottles of Muskat. That's it.

Oh... and most of the expensive wines use mashed up fish. Bad/mean!

You're welcome for my input.

please elaborate.

They use fish emulsion as fertilizer for the grapes. It's very rich in nutrients, etc... I just found this out about a year ago.

Not a problem for most people, obviously, but it is for me. Thus, good/expensive wine is completely off-limits to me (I won't even take a sip).

What wineries use as fertilizers varies from vineyard to vineyard. There are what are known as "biodynamic" wineries at which the only things used in the vineyard is what is already there (in other words, everything is recycled and re-used again). These wineries do not use fish as fish are not inherently found in vineyards. That's not all that biodynamics is (it also has to do with astrology) but it's one of the practices.

The top wineries in france (Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, Chateau Petrus, Domaine Etienne Sauzet, etc) I can almost assure you do not use "fish emulsion" as they are making wine that speaks of a place (terroir) and that image would be tainted if anything unnatural were used as fertilizer.

Where did you hear such nonsense, anyway? I'm sure some places do it, but certainly not the best wineries.

So what is a good red wine that doesn't taste like absolute crap, but is affordable and within easy access of a poor ass chump such as myself.

I just want the daily glass/meal glass for the health benefits and as a winding down aid.

My favorite reds:

Cusumano - Nero D'avola
House Wine (the Magnificent Wine Company)
Chateau Du Piras - Bordeaux
Attacama - Merlot or Cabarnet (good, cheap Chilean wines)

All available at World Market.
