The Smashing Pumpkins have settled on the track list for "Zeitgeist," the first album since 2000. As previously reported, the album is due July 7 via Martha's Music/Reprise. A first single has yet to be specified, nor has the makeup of the band beyond original frontman Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.

"Is everyone afraid? Has everyone changed?," Corgan sings on opener "Doomsday Clock," a big, loud rocker in the vein of "Geek U.S.A." from "Siamese Dream." The set is frontloaded with songs of this ilk, hearkening back to the grunge era with detuned guitars and pounding drums on tracks such as "Tarantula," "Orchid" and "7 Shades of Black."

A more nuanced, less abrasive approach is evident on "Never Lost," which has vibraphone and organ tucked into the mix, while "For God and Country" is a bass-driven tune with shades of Depeche Mode-style synth-rock. The album closes with the mostly synth-powered "Pomp and Circumstance," as Corgan's multi-tracked vocals take on an angelic effect.

The band will play its first show in six-and-a-half years May 22 at the Grand Rex Theatre in Paris. European festival appearances will follow through mid-June; the Pumpkins' first U.S. show will be Aug. 5 in Baltimore as part of the V Festival.

Here is the track list for "Zeitgeist":

"Doomsday Clock"
"7 Shades of Black:
"Orchid"
"That's the Way"
"Tarantula"
"Starz"
"United States"
"Never Lost"
"Bring the Light"
"Come On (Let's Go)"
"For God and Country"
"Pomp and Circumstance"

Those songs titles are like something from a Marilyn Manson album...hmm...I guess it's true, seems that they had an album playback for the press...so some other people should have the low-down soon, too.

Looking at the names of the songs, and thinking back to the SP flag, the words 'album' and 'concept' spring to mind.

Sounds like it RAWKS like a motherfucker, though :D

here's the new Manson song. The new SP album is going to sound exactly like it.
Then I'm not totally afraid.

I thought Manson had faded into obscurity. I really like "If I Was Your Vampire"; very Depeche-Mode and Holy Wood. Dare I say, I might pick up Eat Me, Drink Me and skip Year Zero, but that might change. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

None of those titles are as bunk as the album title. "Doomsday Clock" looks like it might be promising. Please, let's just bury that god-awful black and white American flag logo. That thing sucks HARD, and with two songs reputedly "United States" and "For God and Country", this may look like a case where I buy the CD, toss out the booklet, and make my own cover.

I was thinking about this in bed this mornings...despite my initial reservations over the album titles...I mean, they are very alt-rock 98-00...If they are compared to stuff like Crying Tree of Mercury and Sacred & Profane, they're not too bad...but they still seem very forcibly alt-rock.

Ya, honestly, all you kids freaking the fuck out over song titles are absolutely ridiculous. The joke isn't the song titles, but the pessimism displayed by a great number of people in here. All of you are so geared up to shit all over this album as soon as it comes out, and you'll all be the first to jump on the band wagon if it's a big success. Are you people here to bitch and moan about something you haven't even heard a single note off of yet?? Totally irrational...(and a waste of time and energy) How are these song titles any different from 'Crush', 'Snail', 'Bury Me', 'Hummer' (i mean c'mon hummer??),'Geek USA', 'Rocket', 'Jelly Belly'...and most people cream their goddamn pants over these songs...and that list could go on. Chill the fuck out, go outside and enjoy the sun... be happy that we have a pumpkins album for the first time in 7 years. If it stinks, well such is life, not the end of the world, don't go hanging yourselves (least we have siamese dream), if it kicks ass well fuck ya!

Even though the thread is already in Hell, and has degenerated into an argument about negativity on the message board, I will go ahead and add my two cents....

I don't really see what the problem with the tracklist was. I mean, it's not like you should have been expecting amazing titles, and you must admit that "Doomsday Clock" sounds alot better than "Baby, Let's Rock."

As far as the two lines of lyrics that we got..I don't really see how one could call the lyrics shitty based on two lines. And once again, I wasn't even expecting great lyrics...for every good song lyric that Billy Corgan his written, he's written five horrible ones. His most consistent writing was on Adore and possibly Machina, and those two albums came out a loooong time ago.

I'm somewhat hopeful about the album, but I'm definitely not going to feel let down if it sucks, because..well...it's not like I'm expecting a masterpiece.

Now when Roger Waters puts out another solo album....that will be a masterpiece.
