This morning I logged on to my laptop, la dee la, everything was fine. About 10 minutes after starting I got the automatic update counter and seeing as I was doing nothing of note I decided to click restart now. When I logged back on I got an error message with the heading:

RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation

"The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL"

HEEEEEEEEEEEELP. Nothing appears to have changed performance wise.

A quick google brought this (http://www.file.net/process/rthdcpl.exe.html) up. Not sure if it is of much help though!

So may need to re-install drivers for sound card?

Euan, I know how to sort it now.

Go to Add/Remove Programs. Check the box "Show updates". Scroll down to the latest update, it's KBSXXX902 dated 4/4/07 (where X is a number I can't remember!) then remove it. I've just done it, restarted and it's gone. It wanted to update it again but I cancelled it this tie.

RTHDCPL.EXE

Realtek, right?

I have the same card on my laptop I think. I disable it most of the time.

HHCTRL.OCX is something to do with ActiveX too, so I'd imagine something in the Automatic Updates thing set it off.

It's a bit last ditch, but if you didn't want to disable the card, you could always try disabling Automatic Updates and just use Autopatcher (http://www.autopatcher.com/) instead. (That is also good, by the way, for people who's copies of Windows are, er... might not get past the WGA check, let's say.)
