So I have recently updated Windows and stuff, and all was well for a while until everything started slowing down. My first thought was Spyware, so I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to see if anything was using up a lot of CPU. And I noticed that CPU usage never went under about 40%, even when it wasn't doing anything. And on the list was a mysterious .exe file that seemed to just be sitting there running the CPU at like 40-60% constantly. Seemed like textbook spyware.

So I Googled it and it turned out to be fucking Windows Defender, the thing Microsoft brought out to stop shit like this happening in the first place. So I killed it because I already have Spybot which is better anyway and now everything is fine.

Grrr! :yar:

Is this on Vista?

No, just regular old XP. I had to kick Vista to the curb for now. :O

It annoys me that Vista doesn't have IEEE 1394 networking.

Why get rid of it??

Vista can't do Firewire? :O

It can, but previously in XP you could use Firewire for adhoc PC-to-PC networking as well.

:O

I had no idea you could do that. But yeah, I guess they wouldn't want people being, you know, overly productive or anything.

Actually, if I had to guess I'd probably just put it down to incompetence. If they failed to accomodate stuff like third-party CD burning software, they probably left out lots of other things too. :(

My guess is that they decided it wasn't being used enough and maybe it was a security flaw :oh:

A bit like integrating a web browser into an OS and not bothering to include a virus scanner? :D
