Just curious. I hate buying food on campus because it's crap and overpriced, so I always bring a lunch. I have two bento boxes now (little containers that fit together so you can fit a decent amount of food quite compactly) and it's easy and fun and free for me.

So, do you bag it, buy it, or eat at home? Also, what do you generally eat for lunch?

I usually skip lunch, or have it later at home, mainly because I often have back to back classes in the afternoon.

When I do get a chance, I have lunch on campus. There's a decent deli at our student centre and I still have money from my meal-plan two years ago that's carried over each semester. So, I don't have to dip into my actual cash.

When I was in school. I'd usually just skip lunch and roam the halls with my friends. Or, I'd bum food from my friend Vince. He didn't care.

My mum still makes me a lunch for work! But I would do it myself if I had to. Otherwise I would just exist on average quality bacon or sausage baguettes from the average cafe here.

At school I always had a packed lunch as school dinners are gross and you had to eat them off a plastic tray thing D:

At uni, if I was in over lunch, I would often grab a cob from the canteen, or if I was in until the late evening grab some hot food as I could never be bothered to cook when I got back.

When working, I either take sandwiches, or go out and buy something.

I always come home to eat and I've never eaten anything at the university.

I buy lunch, it costs usually between $6-8 a day but I need to get out of the office for an extended period at some point during the day.

At school (up til high school) I nearly always had packed sandwiches, with a few bought lunches towards the end. At uni I had packed sandwiches a fair bit still but began to branch out and buy more and more.

When I first started working I used to bring lunches most of the time but as I've gotten more rushed in the morning thru the years I never do anymore. I eat my cereal with soy milk every morning at work.

As for what I ate/eat. Hmmm.

In kindergarten my parents gave us ham, jam and cheese s'wiches. They didn't know any better.
Later on it was mostly some lunch meat (typically ham but also pastrami, roast beef) or smoked chicken with some lettuce and sometimes tomato (tho that usually soggied it) and some carrot sticks, apples, etc.
When I bought stuff at school it was invariably meat pies and sausage rolls, mmm..

At uni it was whatever really tho initially it was too expensive to buy meals every day I usually had a danish or something like that. The uni food courts had a fair bit of variety but my regular was a chicken schnitzel s'wich with mayo and lettuce.

In Brisbane/Sydney I would buy whatever I felt like for lunch... often a kebab, hot roast roll, salad, curry + rice, chinese, Nando's, etc. In London I nearly always had either a s'wich pack from M&S or a Pret chicken salad.

Here in DC I nearly always have one of the following (Healthy... *cough*) options:
- 2 slices of Pizza + a soda
- Cuba style yellow rice + chicken with a garden salad
- Five Guys burger + fries
- Potbelly sandwich (either the italian or wreck)
- A steak + cheese from the Perfect Pita
- something from Sushi express
- something from the generic cash-only food/salad bar (you pay by weight, so a decent meal gets expensive)
- Ranch #1 (fast food grilled chicken sandwiches...)

occasionally I'll step out and have Baja Fresh (tho I really should walk the extra 2 blocks and go to Chipotle instead). And on Fridays we nearly always go to an actual sit-down place and order beer etc and that's usually about $20.

I brought lunch to school every day from elementary school through high school. And now I usually go to the dining hall for lunch and I cook something for dinner or pick up something in the little on-campus store.

I bring a cheese sandwich to work nearly every day. I almost slit my throat once when I made some for James to bring to work and he loved them!

I'm totally repulsed by brought-from-home meals, always have been. I hate the plastic bags, I hate the tupperware, I hate the gathered fumes. Uck, anything but.

I lunched on an excellent falafel pita from a street vendor this afternoon, incidentally.

I usually skip - sometimes I buy a sandwich if my stomach starts moaning.

That's why I got bento boxes, I hated wasting plastic bags. Unfortunately you cant fit all that much food in them. It works for me though. I used to just wait until I got home but now some days I work until 5 and I'd probably faint from low blood sugar if I didnt pack anything.

today i had three mini mushroom turnovers, baby carrots and celery with a little thing of ranch, two toothpicks with edamame stuck on them, blueberries and a slice of halavah or whatever it's called--a chocolate sesame dessert thing.

I took cheese sandwiches to school/uni for 15 odd years. Recently I've gotten all classy, and now I take tinned salmon and lettuce, and make a sandwich.

i've never brought lunch from home since i've been in college. i either buy lunch (from wherever strikes my fancy. like today i ate a sandwich from panera bread) or eat at home. i usually eat something "light" for lunch, like a sandwich and a salad and some fruit.

normally I would say that is a gluttony lunch, but I have started eating like it's going out of fashion. I had a bacon sandwich half hour after finishing my man size dinner last night. BEEEEEEFFFFFCCCAAAAAAKKKKEEEE.

My mom makes it , OH Yeah!!! , She's such a good cook , but if she's busy then I'll just have a Hot Pocket. I have no idea why Jim Gaffigan thinks they're gross , I eat them all the time.

since i work in the evening, this does apply to me somehow..

sometimes I eat lunch at home before going to work, some days I go out to eat right before work and other times I just eat whatever is in the cafeteria at work (since it's free). Other times I'll go to work early and order food from the lunch menu since we get a 50% discount on staff meals......

but yeah. it varies greatly.

Same, it's really expensive to eat on campus. Like $5 a day, and I'm not about to waste $80 a month on food, I only make $300 a month :(

yeah im the same way.. as soon as i entered highschool and there was an actual cafeteria with hot food i stopped my mom from making me lunch.. i lose my appetite thinking about food sitting around in bags for hours, i dunno. as a kid i rarely ate my lunch cause i found it so gross..
it is expensive this way but its worth it for warm cooked food imo.

How can you say that, living in america? Or are you being comical? America is dirt cheap for grub, thats why everyones fat. I paid £4.99 for a Medium Burger Kang meal the other day. That's almost $10. I bet it's half that there.

well, i don't like to eat fast food every day. in fact, i don't really LIKE to eat fast food ever. if i did, i'd be a lot fatter, but probably also have a lot more money.

what i meant was, food on campus is really expensive. a bagel and cream cheese is like $2.00 and it's not even a nice bagel! it's one of those small ones that's chewy and the cream cheese is just a little stupid packet. i had tofu stir fry the other day with some noodles and it was like $9. and the coffee is like $1.50 for 8 oz.

ps we're all fat because we don't exercise, duh! ;)

i'm so very much the same way. i hate eating almost all foods that have been frozen, too. it's just not right.

i will bring certain types of meals to certain types of places- basically work at an office that's very close by to my house and has a real, good fridge in a clean kitchen. in such cases i'll bring a salad and a bottle or container of dressing, individually wrapped cheese (logic being if it's wrapped and in my fridge at home, or wrapped and in my fridge at work, it's no difference... and i don't mean the nasty american slices in cellophane), fruit, or maybe a new leftover for heating. but it cannot be unrefrigerated for long at all, and can't have the potential to get soggy or otherwise gross. i know it's tons cheaper to bring lunches but sometimes it just skeeves me out.

hey buddy, what cat said! who the fuck wants to eat burger king frequently and be even fatter? one of the biggest problems concerning this fucking country and weight is that such crappy food is so cheap, and healthy food is so overpriced. thankfully healthier choices are catching on and they can work if you're careful- almost all fast food places have pretty good salads, so if you just have your own light dressing available you're set. i keep light dressings in the fridge at work so i can just pick up a salad with grilled chicken without pouring 300 calories of their dressing on top. if the salad has stuff like bacon and tons of cheese, i scrape most of it out.

My school has a pretty good salad bar, but it's like $4.50 for this tiny paltry little thing and i get hungry like 5 min later

yeah I suppose. but healthy stuff here is still astronomical! I just chose Bk as a comparison. i had my first subway couple of weeks ago. Chicken and Bacon Ranch foot long - £4 ($7.80) a bit steep I thought but it was nice.

Evidently I should avoid dairy for two weeks so my wisdom teeth holes dont get infected. I cant shake having milk in my tea though :(

eh that little bit probably won't hurt. what about soy? i'm actually surprised that's not what you use anyway. ;)

I'm either going to have grilled cheese or maybe a slice of mushroom for lunch. :fat:

with that i completely agree. i don't like it much to begin with, but once when i needed a caffeine fix they were out of all milks besides whole and soy. not wanting to drink cheese, i went with soy for my latte... i tried to like it, but it just wasn't happening.
