View Full Version : Where do you do your grocery shopping?

Hi There, Am Pam

I generally go to Stop & Shop, but Hannaford is also great. The advantage of Stop & Shop is that browsing the circular pays off. Of course, that also implies purchasing what's on sale, rather than buying what you want.

Hannaford doesn't really have sales, at least not the way Stop & Shop does. They just generally have lower prices, making it easier to just buy what you want. Hannaford also seems to have better selection, depending on the item, as well as pretty good generic food.

These two are really the only two grocery stores worth going to in my area. There is also A & P, "Fresh Town" (which used to be "Food Town), Price Chopper, Shoprite and Wal-Mart. I absolutely loathe Wal-Mart, if for no other reason then being the most obnoxious store to shop in. The parking lot is always full of idiots, and navigating the isles isn't any better.

Anyway, what's available in your area?

I used to shop at Walmart because it was convenient--I could take care of my grocery shoping and my home-matinance shopping (or whatnot) in one blow.

but Food Lion is closer and I find that when I shop there, I buy less and pay less.

Harris Teeter is also close at hand and they have a little more class than Food Lion. I always feel like I'm shopping with rich snobs when I go there, but I like checking out their produce for exotic or peculiar fruit and vegtables. Trying new stuff is fun.

We do our grocery shopping at:
Econo Foods- The produce sucks and the prices aren't that great but it's in town
Aldi - Everything is cheap and I love getting the frozen bags of fish and chicken
Dollar General - Good for snack things, peanuts, fruit bars, etc.
County Market - Go there rarely because it's so busy and I hate people
Wal Mart - only get popcorn and chocolate there because I hate Wal Mart and the people who shop there

i always find it hard to believe that there are places other than Stop&Shop.

I go to Stop and Shop for my general needs,
Trader Joe's for my cheap healthy shiat
Bread and Circus (aka Whole Foods) for specialty things
Big Y for veggies and fruits and the Big Y wine store for cheese

oh, also, PRICE CHOPPER, LOL, amirite? BUT, i do get my morningstar farms black bean burgers there in brattleboro, VT, as they do not sell them in western mass.

and Publix is the coolest name ever.

oh man i love me some trader joe's, there just aren't any close to where i live now. i like whole foods, but sometimes you just want a fucking box of cheerios, not whole grain flax enriched high fiber wheatgrass flavoured healthy-os. that's why wegmans is the most perfect place ever, it has an organics, commercial, pre-made, take out, cafe, tea room (yes, a whole room), pizza, sammiches, sushi bar, chinese buffet, bread bakery, pastry bakery, etc......

Giant, mostly.
We are literally < 10 mins walk from a Trader Joe's so we go there a fair bit too
Our last option is Whole Foods, which is effin pricey.

In Florida, it was almost always Publix.

Here, I/we do Waldbaum's & Stop&Shop every weekend. Last week every item that we bought at Stop&Shop was on sale at Waldbaum's, so now we always go their first.

During the week, their are plenty of small & medium sized Russian shops/grocery stores around, so it's not bad at all. Plus, there is a CVS and other good stores (99 cents store, lots of restaurants & etc) around.

HOHN, if there is a Trader Joe's near you, I highly recommend it. Your first time in there you'll probably end up spending $150 but not only are there some great deals (a box of whole wheat couscous for $1.99 I think? etc) but better versions of things you'll find at most places, as well as totally unique items (like wasabi almonds, inventive frozen pizzas, to-go food, sweet snacks, awesome!! chips, frozen portioned meals) and high-quality meat, cold cuts, and bread products (their herb focaccia-style loaf bread and bran cranberry muffins are so good). I like to do most of my shopping there. Usually though I don't get a chance to go :( It's close to my campus but out of the way and is closed by the time I leave school so...

Otherwise I like to go to Meat Farms (http://www.giuntasmeatfarms.com/) for produce, they have the best prices ANYWHERE on fruit & veg ($.99 /lb for grapes? damn right!). For other stuff (processed food) I go to wherever is closest/most convenient. Usually Waldbaums or Pathmark, which is open 24hr :smelly:

Dominick's 95% of the time because it's a block from my house.

If i'm feeling poor or want some good cheese without paying a ton, it's Trader Joe's.

bran cranberry muffins are so good

Kendra and I bought these once I think (at least they were some sort of fruit-based bran muffin) and they tasted like something horses would eat. I think each muffin had 50% of your fiber needs or something

I see a lot of Publix love on here. I go there when I'm in Florida, they make some of the biggest cakes I've ever seen without having to go to a traditional bakery. I was impressed.

At home, it's Jewel sometimes. Any Chicago people brave the one on Clark and Division? I loathe that one, but always seem to wind up there because it's on the way home from work and church. Plus they never run out of CTA passes. The people that shop there make me want to cry though.

Other than that, it's local fruit/vegetable markets and Roman Supermercado because they're cheap.

 I think you ended up eating all of them except for the 1st one I had! I don't know why, sometimes I get a craving for that nasty crap and I never end up liking it...sigh.

But yeah we typically end up at Giant because, well, you can't get Edy's ice cream and Lay's chips at Trader Joe's (next door) or Whole Foods (across the street). Giant is iffy though; often the produce is of lower quality than the Trader Joe's and is either the same price or higher. You have to catch it at a good time. Trader Joe's is nice but I can't ever get any practical shopping done there. They just don't have a great selection. They are good for when it's cold out and you're tired but you need some damn cheese or something. "Honey, go get some cheese please."

I like Whole Foods but again, I guess I was raised on places like Giant / Food Lion / Wal*Mart because I always feel a bit lost and a LOT ripped off.

in the UK, i LOVE marks and spencers food. they have the coolest premade/takeout, like the uncooked fresh meals in the special packaging that steam in the microwave. i think i like sainsbury's too.

the trader joe's pesto/tomato/mozz personal pizza is one of my favourite things in life. i need to take a trip to get one i think.

I guess you just have to have a taste for branny things... I love it :D I used to mix flax powder into yogurt... aw man that was some good shit! Haven't bought it in a while though, Trader Joe's stopped carrying it maybe a couple of years ago.

BTW Trader Joe's people, please try the banana crisps. They have 2 kinds - the thick and the thin ones, I am talking about the thin ones... they are out of this world. They stopped having them for a while and I found out it was because the nutrition facts were way off (I think they listed the whole bag as 140 calories and very low fat... easy to believe cos it was fruit), they've now fixed it, the facts are much more shocking though so try not to read the back while eating. Highly recommended! Also the Dr. Praeger's California Veggie Burgers. Wowza :sailermoon:

I'm always too scared to go into Marks and Spencer of any variety b/c it looks expensive. I shop at Sainsburys and sometimes Iceland if i'm feeling poor/frozen : ( leave me alone!

I do have to add though, it was very surreal to see the Wal*Mart style writing and logoish things and ... you weren't in Wal*Mart :O It was like being in an alternate universe of America where everyone had British accents and let the Queen put her seal of approval on the cereal boxes.

guh, yeah, everyone knows that, get with the times, where are you, last week? etc.

I went to Lidl today, I bought plant bulbs.
Usually food what we eat comes from either Sainsburys, Tescos, Waitrose, or Marks n Sparks. Though I'm not that fussy.
I was in a Market Basket last week, and gosh, American supermarket food all looks so overly processed and fake. Do Americans ever eat vegetables?! :P
