| Frank Miller’s Sin City is based on a series of graphic novels written by himself, a violent city, “Basin City”, where the police have a truce with the dangerous prostitutes who rule the downtown, and to stay there, just barely keep it peaceful. The movie has a breath taking comic book look to it, keeping it black and white and splashing a bit of color on so much as a car or a splash of blood.
The movie is divided into three different story lines from three different novels. The first, Marv (Mickey Rourke), an enormous man, who falls in love with one of the prostitutes, Goldie (Jamie King), goes on a rampage to kill her killer, brutally destroying almost anyone he talks to. The next, Dwight (Clive Owen), is a newspaper photographer, who also is in love with one of the prostitutes, kills an undercover cop with the help of the prostitutes and do whatever they can to cover it up. Finally, Hardigan (Bruce Willis), a cop who has been put away for the rape of an eleven year old girl (later seen nine-teen years old, played by Jessica Alba), who he was trying to stop the real criminals. But when he stops getting letters from her for eight years straight, he gets one final one and learns she is great danger. Unlike other graphic novel movies, like The Mask and Men In Black, is always fast paced and with the black and white contrast of the entire film gives it a unique feel. Almost the entire movie is done on a green screen, except one set. Many scenes contain some or large blotches of color, one scene in which the prostitutes and Dwight are shooting at the police from the rooftops, the sky is a dark and threatening red. The acting was very good; Rourke very emotional in search for his heart and soul’s killer. Bruce Willis trying to save all he has left from the past, performs better than anything I have scene him in a long time, and let’s give a cheer for him to have hair in a movie again. Owen’s part, seemed to have played a very scared character, knowing that the city will be at war, if the news of a dead officer being killed downtown gets to the police. Rated R for sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content including dialogue. Reviewer Rating of Movie : ![]() ![]() ![]() | |
