What a package deal! You get a great little carrying case for all of the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness singles, with a nice little booklet. Physically speaking, it's truly unique, but we're not worried about that. Let the music speak for itself.

This is a great collection of b-sides on the singles from the Mellon Collie era, most all of them excellent, especially the Bullet and Zero singles. Each has its own "flow" or "mood", the 1979 and Tonight singles being rather mellow and low-key. The Bullet Single has lots of great 80's covers with an electronic feel to them, and the Zero single throbs with great hook after great hook and ends with a 27 minute medley. This can be a blessing or a curse, depending on what kind of mood you're in.

This Collection is neat, and if even for sheer cosmetic purposes, it's worth the buy to impress your friends!

Reviewer Rating of CD :

After releasing "Mellon Collie" and losing touring piano player Jonathan Melvoin and long time drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, The Smashing Pumpkins had little they could release right off the bat. This was their hay day though, and so they decided they'd better take advantage of it and put out a boxed set, which was to be called "The Aeroplane Flies High." "Aeroplane" is all the singles of "Mellon Collie" put together on 5 discs each containing 6-7 songs. Not much can be said about "Aeroplane" except that their are many hits with many misses. Songs like, "Set The Ray To Jerry" and "Pennies" have become favourites among loyal Pumpkinheads, while songs like (if you'd like to call it a song) "Pistachio Medley" really missed, to say the least. Overall, it's worth buying for sure, but you might want to look for it on Ebay, because it's getting rarer and rarer as the days go by. Don't buy it for some extraordinary price on Ebay, though, because sometimes I've seen it on sale for over 200 dollars, when new, it only costs around 50 - 60.

The Aeroplane Flies High is a great collection of B-sides and singles from the Mellon Collie era. I don't think any one disc in the set is better than the others. Depending on your mood, there is a disc in the set that will be more appreciated than others. The Mellon Collie era was a great time to be a Pumpkins fan. This CD shows just how productive they were and how much music they've actually recorded. Mellon Collie wasn't a hastilly put together album, and this box set is a testament to that.

The Bullet With Butterfly Wings single was a great idea because the pumpkins did a great job covering those songs. Another great thing about the set is theres at least a half dozen songs with James singing. I don't think James is as good a singer as Billy, but I think James adds another dimension to the band's work.

I got this set at Strawberries for $35 new. And based on what i've seen on Ebay and heard from others, I was probably really lucky getting it that cheap. With a little searching around though it's possible to get it in the $40-65 range. Don't spend more than $75 on it or your nuts.
