| Violator is a very dark, very strange album. Depeche Mode captured a certain mood in this album, a mood I haven't found in any other album. Unfortunately, they have tried to duplicate this mood with three or four more albums since then and have been unsuccessful. Violator is a classic recording, it's something to put on your turntable after a bad day or ending a relationship, that is, if it doesn't make you kill yourself. That is the beauty of the album, songs ilke "Enjoy the silence" and "Policy of truth" can be both catchy yet dark at the same time, which I suppose is the entire feel of the album. It's playful, but it's like playing with sharp glass, and not realizing it's really that sharp until your hands are bloody. This is a dangerous, beautiful sountrack to the ride to hell. The cover art explains it all.

| Somebody important once said that the New Wave movement began with Joy Division's 'Closer' and ended with Depeche Mode's 'Violator.' But it's tough to define Violator as "New Wave." Instead I'd call Violator a bridge between 80's synthpop music and 90's techno. It is definetely one of the most popular alternative records of all time, and you'll probably never hear another one like it. The record contains only 9 songs, but each is truly a masterpiece. Most people won't need any time to "warm up" to the songs, they become instant favorites.
The album contains four singles: Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, and World in My Eyes. Personal Jesus became on the band's biggest hits on both sides of the Atlantic in 1989, months before Violator's release. The song features a hypnotizing stomping rythm and blues-tinged guitars to create a song that combines rock and electropop. Enjoy the Silence is the song that sealed Violator's success. Probably the most danceable tune DM have ever cranked out, the song is not your ordinary dancefloor hit. It manages to be gloomy and uplifting at the same time, with simple yet irrestiable lyrics. Everything else from Violator is classic, too. Most of the tracks continue with the techno vibe, and the lyrical subject matter ranges from drugs and addiction to sexual perversion. Despite being 13 years old, Depeche Mode's Violator sounds like it was recorded last week.
