This is the White Stripes' debut album; it is much more of demo quality than most debuts are. Later in their career, their low-fi tendencies become part of their appeal, but at this, their self-titled debut, the poor quality just makes the songs suffer. This release does lay down the ground roots and give you an idea of who they are as a band, and let you in on their obvious blues influence. The songs here could have benefited from a little better production, although the songs could have been good, they could have been better with perhaps a better production value, some bass, and perhaps less lazier drumming. In other words, the songs don't live up to their full potential due to poor quality, although we should still be glad The White Stripes will probably never be the kind of band to record a 3 million dollar album with a symphony orchestra in their background with songs that are over-produced to the point of sounding manufactured.
