The newest in the R.E.M. catalogue, this album got mixed reviews. I saw it get five stars, and two stars. Personally, when I first heard it, I thought it was the best record ever made. Now, looking back, I'm not sure I'd take it to that extreme, but this still remains a favourite record of mine.

The hit single, "Leaving New York" and fan-favourites "The Outsiders" and "Boy in the Well" are the quote-on-quote 'hits,' but the album is full of gems. Even when, in tracks 10 and 11, "Around the Sun" begins to falter, there are still bright spots. Contrary to many rock / pop fans' beliefs, R.E.M. has yet to release a rocker album (ie "Monster," 1994) for over 10 years, but 45-year old Michael Stipe and company still have the energy they once had in mutli-platinum "Automatic for The People." The big question now is, "What's next for R.E.M?"

Before we worry about that, you ought to buy this, or at the least, download it off their website, www.remhq.com. "Around the Sun" is by far, the most subdued of their recent records, and it fails to catch the attention that "In Time" hits "Animal" and "Bad Day" did, but it's still worth the thirteen dollars it'll cost you. All in all, I am going to give this record a 9 of 10, because... well... it deserves it!

Reviewer Rating of CD :

I'm going to have to disagree with the previous review. I've been a huge R.E.M. fan for years, but I wasn't a big fan of 2001's Reveal.

After seeing them live in 2003 playing a set of a lot of great older material, I thought maybe their next album would be a return to form and that I would enjoy it. I mean, "Animal" and "Bad Day" from 2003's In Time were great songs.

I couldn't have been more dissapointed in 2004 when I bought In Time. Bland. Bland. Bland.

For the completist, you may want to buy this album just for the sake of owning every R.E.M. album and hope that maybe next time around they can pull their heads out of their asses.. For the person who's new to the band, don't bother.
