After 3 electronic and synth-induced "experimentation" albums, U2 decided to make another album more in tune with its roots. The result is a collection of songs that could have maybe in some parts benefited from some of the Achtung and Zooropa stylings. While the songs are generally strong and have presence, there is that lackluster sense that U2 was just trying to be who they used to be, and when most bands try to return to their roots, they get this effect and it just seems to be even more of a slap in the face to the fans of yesteryear. All That You Can't Leave Behind, musically is a good album, but the idea behind it kind of got the worst of some people. It's low-key, and rather depressing at points almost to where you just want to give Bono a hug and tell him to stop worrying too much or he'll have a stroke. Nonetheless, it's a good listen because the music and subject matter, although depressing at times, is still not bad and still better than most releases that came out in 2000.
