When U2 decided to record this album in Berlin, the social climate of that region was indeed changing, maybe this was or wasn't intentional, but somehow, the Climate of U2 changed and produced one of my most favorite albums ever. We didn't know what to expect when we knew there was going to be new U2 material, some fans were appalled, some were shocked, and some say they had sold out for a more commercial sound. Whatever your reaction to Achtung, it made you feel something when you heard it for the first time. The soundscape changed, this was a clean, crisp, and well-produced album, which, even though War and The Joshua Tree were wonderful albums, didn't entail. Achtung wasn't raw, it was a polished jewel that glittered up the charts and U2 Fans alike. Though it alienated a lot of fans at the time, most came back after a few listens when they realized it was still, at the core, a U2 album in the sense that it was good music, it had something to say and the songwriting was top notch. Indeed experimentation was a part of this album, but U2 have been known to have a few tricks up their sleeves other than guitar, bass, drums and keyboard anyways. Achtung Baby is a masterpiece and when you listen to it, it still sounds new...even though as I write this it's almost 14 years old!
