| Burn to Shine is, for the most part, a gentle, heartfelt album and marks a departure from Ben Harper’s more political songs to deeper musings on love and emotion. Sexy, slow ballads (‘The Woman In You’, ‘Two Hands Of A Prayer’, ‘Show Me A Little Shame’) are interspersed with sunny beats, bittersweet wanderings and the more dubious (to some fans) fuzzy rock of ‘Less’ and ‘Please Bleed’. The wide array of techniques and instruments utilised by Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals also never fails to satisfy, whether they be merrily pounding their bongos or simply delighting in a sweet guitar melody. Burn to Shine is perhaps an ode to the South, evoking even through its cowboy artwork visions of country girls, sweltering towns, and ‘warm Southern rain’, until the very last soft rumble of Ben’s incredible voice.
