| It's a new world since "Version 2.0" was released all the way back in 1998, and Garbage seemed to want to stray from their familiar musical selves. Sometimes on this record, this formula has disastrous effects. Not to say that Beautiful Garbage was garbage, but it wasn't Garbage we knew. It encompasses strange additives in the songs such as 50's dance ambiance grooves mixed with all the complexities of today's electronic music, sometimes in the same song (i.e. Can't Cry these Tears). Also, we have some songs that Garbage should not do; the extremely depressing, ballad-like "Drive you home”, the ultra-popness of "Cherry Lips", and the likeliness to other bands in "Parade" (Smashing Pumpkins) and “So Like a Rose" (guitar sounds suspiciously like a Live song). This release leaves us wondering if Garbage even knows who they are anymore as well.
The songs aren't totally bad, the music is good, but at the core of this, you have to trick yourself into believing its another band and not Garbage to enjoy it. For genuinely having good songs that are better than average, but having to trick yourself to enjoy it, this album gets a marginal rating. Reviewer Rating of CD : ![]() ![]() ![]() | |
