| Boy: "Daddy?"
Father: "Yes, son?" Boy: "What does 'regret' mean?" Father: "Well son, a funny thing about regret is... it's better to regret something you have done, then to regret something you haven't done. And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, would you be sure and tell her--SATAN!!!" That's the intro. Played over melodic, heaven-sounding Enya music. Schizophrenic isn't the right word for this release, but it's close. Gibby Haynes, lead singer for the 'Hole, is twisted. Truth. There is nothing else to discuss: the fucker is OUT OF HIS MIND. This album is 33 minutes long. 11 songs. Only one of the songs feature actual singing (in English, at least). It's like some sort of twisted, bizarre carnival in your nightmares where nothing is serious. Or, even sacred. The album begins with the above-mentioned intro, a song called "Sweat Loaf". Not really a cover of a Sabbath classic, unless you count wailing as a substitute for the lyrics. "Pittsburgh to Lebanon" harkens back to the days of Jimi Hendrix in a smartassed manner. "Hay" is one of the many noise collages on this LP (along with "Weber", "U.S.S.A.", and a few others). It's tape recordings of people saying "hey!" And there's even some backmasking attempts during it. Exciting. If the "O-Men" is supposed to be some sort of potshot at someone, I'd love to know what it is. Seems like an in-joke regarding death metal that started getting big around the mid-80's. The most interesting song on this has to be "Kuntz". It's a record playing of a man singing in Indian about something, with a word warped just enough to make it sound like he's saying "cunts". Classic. Believe it or not, this is probably the most comedic song on the record... that is, unless you can hold the laughs after listening to "Human Cannonball". That is the song with actual straight-forward lyrics by the way, and boy does it sound like Robert Plant! And the finale of the record? A phone recording over bass antics of a woman talking about getting insomnia after being raped. Wow. I really don't know what the hell to say about all this... if you can believe it, it's actually not a bad record. Sure, it's not serious, but I can't help but wonder if the Surfers were trying to joke on someone. Maybe it's me. Oh boy, I hope not. Reviewer Rating of CD : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | |

| this is your band. this is your band on acid. any questions?
an acid trip that was turned into an album. there's two actual songs on it, one a sort of cover, the other a more normal buttholes song. a trip, the most fucked up album i've ever heard in my life. it's all a joke though, cuz the band is a joke band at heart, brilliant though any ways. this was their best album, and in a way their career peaked here. they never released a bad album, but none at this caliber again. buy it. | This is a great album to haunt your dreams or just to listen to, the music is great and the few english lyrics on it are well done. One note, the song "Kuntz" is in Thai, roughly translated, it is about an itch that won't go away, and the work Kuntz that is repeated means literaly "itch".
